this is certainly not true. it would be accurate to say that most reality-tv manufactured artists don't write their own stuff, but its far too cynical--even for me--to hear people say that most modern musicians don't write their own music. current songwriters may not be equal to the caliber of those legendary artists like bob dylan, bruce springsteen, jackson browne, neil young, etc...but an original piece is an original piece, and there are plenty of amazing bands out there writing and recording amazing music. you just won't find many of them on tv, which is a bad place to search for good music anyways. ;)
I probably shouldn't have phrased it that way.

My main thought is the chances of Supernova writing their own material is probably akin to my chances of winning the lottery ... without buying a ticket.

I'm thinking Supernova is writing mostly their own stuff and then having Butch Walker overproduce it. But they probably will have at least one potential hit written for them in case the tour is fizzling (the additions of the House Band and The Panic Channel to their tour are also insurance against a total flop). Toby's song is right up their alley although I don't think its quite the next "Pretty Vegas" and he already recorded it with his band back in Australia.

The winner was the best performer all season. I know he doesn't fit everyone's tastes (certainly not mine in the least) so I don't have a problem even though I was really starting to think they'd go for Toby who would have been a much safer choice and is more of a straight up rock and roll guy. I wasn't going to buy tickets to see this crap anyway. Its just a fun diversion.

I must say the show needs to go in a completely new direction if they want to continue in the future. Maybe find another band like INXS desperate for a lead singer so people can have a clue what they are looking for at the outset. The other option would be to audition for the House Band who have been stellar over the past two seasons.

Not surprised at all...

Well, except for the extreme theatrical production of the "first" time Supernova takes the stage together with the new lead singer. What a load of crock.

Lukas fits right in and will do fine. Dilana has a future in front of her that will, I honestly think, outlast anything Supernova does.

Maybe next year they can pick a new member for the Wiggles.

Dilana's biggest problem is she can't write a tune to save her life. If Gilby is going to be writing her album that isn't going to help matters either! After what he said about Magni (being a better musician than a front man) and how Magni joined them on the final song perhaps they should consider picking him up as lead guitarist to round out the lineup. I can't think of one memorable guitar solo Gilby's ever done.

In other news, apparently the original Supernova band won their injunction against the now nameless band performing on the show... I don't actually think they even used the Supernova word on the show tonight!

All I can say is YIKES.

IMO Lukas had the worst vocal ability of all the remaining contestants. As nice as I can put it, he sounds like a dying goat. His song, however, was well written, and I think that's what did it for him. Dilana would have been the best fit, considering Toby was poppy. I would have also preferred Magni, as he was the most talented musician out of the bloody lot. :D

Jason Newstead, I can't believe you signed up for this

Oh well, we move on. Please note my disgust in the minutes of the meeting.

Excellent point. It's Pretty Vegas all over again...

having never watched the show, i can't give any insight into how these people sound. i do, however, find it interesting that the two "rock star" seasons have chosen contestants based on the original songs they wrote for the show. at least, that is what i gather from what you all are saying. that's rather puzzling to me. you'd think they'd just want somebody who can belt out rock & roll tunes night in and night out on tour. as a writer, i'm partial to songwriters, so i think its rad that the best songwriter got chosen, but it is curious...

although, studio's can do wonderful things in auto-tuning someone's voice. maybe none of these old cats can write cool tunes anymore, so they need a young, fresh talent to do it for them. but then again, you can normally just bring in someone like butch walker to write catchy radio-friendly pop hooks and produce a catchy radio-friendly pop album...so i guess this whole thing is confusing to me...

I completely agree, I can't wait until her music is released. She is amazing.

I also completely agree with this. You know, they should call the show Rock Writer not Rock Star. They confuse the audience into choosing the best singer rather than who can write a good song. By the way, I hated Lukas' song, but that's just my opinion.

This show is not about the best singer. That show is called American Idol. This show is about fronting a band, which not only means being a good singer but fitting that bands style in all areas - sonically, fashionably, stagecraft, songwriting skills and just who they might want to hang out with on a tour bus for a year.

I don't think the original song had much to do with anything this season although Dilana's lack of songwriting was a severe detriment. Combine that with her absolute mental breakdown and she's lucky to have been the runner up. There's no way those guys would go on tour with someone that volatile if they could choose another option.

Whatever.

They made a copy of American Idol, plain and simple. They were hoping for many viewer like that of AI, only Rock n' Roll Style. If they wanted it to be different they should open it with a disclaimer, rather than picking the person with the best song (or what they think is the best song).

I personally think they picked Lukas long before this show even came to place, looking back at how things played out. I can honestly only remember one time they did something to Lukas that looked bad.

Supernova (or whatever they plan on calling themselves now) actually said that they picked Lukas because he got the most votes not because he had the best original song. I'm sure a little of everything factored into their decision.

The most votes is the worst way to go, IMO, especially because you can vote multiple times. There were also time zone issues that made the entire thing somewhat questionable.

hey...i dont much care either way. i hate these kinds of shows. i just find it interesting that a show that places so much emphasis on the things that don't matter (ie: fashion???) has chosen winners who happen to be the better songwriters (again, i don't have any clue about that, just basing my inference on what you all have said). and just because the winner caught supernova's eye with a song he wrote doesn't make him a good songwriter. i wouldn't exactly place my faith in tommy friggin lee in the first place when it comes to songwriting. ;)
