Rock Band Draft Thread

I have been thinking about it and it makes sense to me to have ONE of your picks, not including the 5th member or lead singer, serve a duel purpose as a back-up vocalist.

This means that either your bassist, guitarist or drummer can be assigned the back-up vocal position. This member CAN NOT sing lead.

Can I offer a counter-proposal: Allow any band member to sing - but unless a lead singer is specifically drafted limit bands to four members or allow a 5 piece instrumentals only group?

If I was somehow able to draft all 4 Beatles, shouldn't they be allowed to be the Beatles???

Query -- any particular reason why you could not have your extra person be a combo player/backup singer, just like any of the other positions can be? I am thinking here of course of the classic rhythm guitar/backup vox combo. If the lead singer can't play rhythm, then I am thinking that 5th spot might get used for it a lot, and that's a prototypical backup singer spot.

I knew this would get tricky, but it needs to be addressed. I am following your logic. The easiest approach seems to be to also allow the 5th player to be able to be the one member that can sing back-up. But again, only if he/she is actually able to play and sing.

As far as pdxKingsFan's proposal, I think that if you would like to use a draft pick to add an instrument to one of your current members, fine. For example, I could use my third pick to add lead vocals to the lead guitar player that I already picked, but now I only have 2 members and will be one member short in the end. Clear?

And I also think it would be fun to name our bands, just before voting commences. Just for fun.

I guess I just don't understand the reasoning behind this at all - in almost any band you see the instrumentalists will also contribute backing vocals - I don't see why we can't have this as well. It makes no sense to me, and it completely kills my concept. :(

If you look back, you will see that we have already made the adjustments to make it so that any one member of the band other than the lead singer can be assigned back-up vocals. This does eliminate three or more part harmonies, but I do not really see how to avoid this. I am sure some might like three guitar players as well, but that dilutes the concept IMO. Any other opinions?
 
I think that it should be assumed that the bass/lead/drummer should be capable of back up vocals if they do it anyway. For example, Michael Anthony would play the bass for Van Halen, but I think his real skill was harmony. I think you can set a rule where only one "lead" exists for your band, so that if you drafted Prince as your lead guitarist, he may provide backup vocals for your song "Fists of Fatal Fury", but he wouldn't at any point lead, no matter how many fans called for "Purple Rain", which wouldn't be part of the setlist anyway.

I don't know if that helped.

Personally, I don't see why having three guitarists would be bad (Bass, Rhythm, Lead.) Considering you only have 5 band members, but there are many ways to rock a tune. I think limiting to 5 members, and given the creativeness of the board, we may see some really inspired combos, or some really odd crud. My guess is both....maybe even at the same time. I don't think we need to narrow things down much further than that.
 
I'm going to shut up after this, but I really think you should just allow us to draft our 5 people however we choose and explain how it all goes together at the end when we name our bands. If we want 5 guitarists so be it. Explain why/how it works at the end.

I guess I'm just really cheesed because I think I have a fun idea, using musicians that others are unlikely to pick (with one exception), and I'd like to explore it. I sat out the video game draft which I really would have enjoyed because of what I felt was a really stupid rule (no multiplayer) only to watch half the draftees draft games that are borderline unplayable singleplayer with a wink and a smile.

Why not just let us do our thing, its all just for fun anyways right?

No need to criticize the rules. I was just following along the "tropical island" theme, as in, stranded on an island by yourself. It wouldn't go with the theme if multiplayer was allowed now would it? But this is not the right place to argue about that.

Sweet, I was helping another person figure out a name for a band a little while ago and i thought one of the ones i came up with was tight..so i got my name already.

And we just need to keep this simple. 5 band members 1 being vocals the rest being an assortment of instruments of your choosing as long as the artist can play that specific instrument. It isn't that hard.

For the record, I agree with Kings Faithful. 1 member must be a lead singer, and the rest can be anything you want. Ideally, I would do it this way in combination with your idea to allow 1 member to play multiple instruments/play an instrument and be a backup singer.

I think this is fine. The simplest plan is often the best.

I don't really think we'd quibble over the fact that our supporting band members can harmonize. If you want your emo screamer just have Matt Heafy before "Ascendancy" or really, "The Crusade." No need for an extra one.

That leaves room for a lot more creativity ... and, I think, fun. And the idea of having to name your group at the end of the draft is also a great idea.

Although I am not participating, i agree. probably worth about $0.00, since I am an impartial observer until the voting starts.... :p
 
I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this, but just to make sure...this is an all-time draft right? Are we allowed to pick people who are no longer alive?

I like pdx's suggestion too. Not only that, but half the fun in these draft threads is discussing/arguing/clarifying rules. Since this draft will have to wait a while for the kick-off, there is plenty time to discuss rules and guidelines.
 
OK. I have decided on the format.

Each participant will pick 5 band members. Referred to as positions 1-5. Any position can be assigned any instrument provided that the member can actually play the assigned instrument. One member can serve a duel roll as a BACK-UP vocalist provided that one of your members is assigned the lead singer. You may use a pick to assign additional instruments or vocals to already selected members, but this will result in having less band members.

I'm confused on the vocals bit. Is it so that no one picks up extra lead vocalists, or is it to discourage harmony? For example, Van Halen had all 4 guys singing at once, creating some nice music to go along with their tunes.

Van Halen singing in harmony? You're kidding, right? Tell me you're kidding...

I interpret the rules as this:

1 role per person in the band except one of the people can sing backup and play their instrument as well. Also, you can pick to have additional, multi-role people, but at the cost of a pick. Right? For example, I could have Weird Al sing + 4 members, one of whom plays and instrument and sings backup. OR I could have Weird Al Sings lead and Play accordion + 3 members, one of whom plays and instrument and sings backup.

Right?
