Kinda like people picking multiplayer games in the draft game board. If I have Elton John as my piano player, people will take into consideration his ability to sing, regardless of how the rules are set up.
Yes exactly.
Since Kingzrool says he is open for further discussion I'll post one last time hoping he'll reverse his ruling, though I'm honestly not hopeful because it seemed like there were a number of people that came out in favor of allowing for maximum creativity that went unheard. Honestly, I can see no reason for having these rules other than to have some rules. The rules in most of the other drafts made sense - you can't allow certain albums because then it becomes an absolute free for all and if everyone wanted Stairway to Heaven they could pick hundreds of greatest hits or compilation albums after they got drafted. Here we're dealing with real people, you draft them, they're completely off the table. And these people have documented skills with tradeoffs for everybody. This is like drafting a fantasy basketball team and saying you won't count the point guards rebounds or the centers assists. In reality you might draft a point guard that can steal a few extra rebounds to make up for a weakness in the front court, and as Kings fans we've all seen the benefits of a passing big man. But I digress... back to music.
If you are going to pick Eddie Van Halen and tell me because he played some keyboards on 1984 that he can be a full fledged keyboardist as well as guitarist in your band for every single song I'm not going to buy it. But if you tell me that as part of their set he will showcase his versatility with a rousing keyboard-guitar mega solo, you might score some points.
If you pick a mega awesome guitarist who also sings odds are he's nowhere as good a singer you'll get if you go with a dedicated vocalist. Again, its on you to tell me why it works for the band if you want my vote.
Let's say you go with Geddy Lee from Rush on bass and also want keyboards and vocals. That is totally legit as he plays all three on most Rush albums. But outside of Rush his vocal range is very limited, in fact many people hate Rush because of his vocals. Also, you're not going to get any fanciful bass or keyboard solos out of him as you would if you went for some crazy bassist known for doing solos.
And what's to stop someone from drafting Trent Reznor, claiming his instrument is a computer or a synthesizer which basically can duplicate the sound of a full band and then loading up on vocalists so they can sing every genre imaginable?
Again these rules just seem to be in place to make rules, stifle creativity and allow for some interesting loopholes, plus be blatantly ignored by the voters at the end. Please let people draft whomever they want and assign them whatever roles they can document. When it comes time to naming the band you also explain how everyone fits together and if you're not compelling then you're not getting my vote.
Honestly, I had plans for a really crazy band, but its not like I was looking to exploit the system, I fully expected to finish in the bottom half of the seeding and get bounced in the first round because only 3 people even knew more than 2 of the people I planned on drafting. In the end the big names are going to win out.
So c'mon Kingzrool, humor us creative types and let us put together our dream bands unencumbered by rules that don't apply to real bands. Pretty please?
