Rock Band Draft Thread

I'm confused on the vocals bit. Is it so that no one picks up extra lead vocalists, or is it to discourage harmony? For example, Van Halen had all 4 guys singing at once, creating some nice music to go along with their tunes.

Yeah there are a lot of examples of this. For some reason it does not seem right to simply allow every member to sing back-up. For this draft, if you must have three or more part harmonies in your band, you will need to sacrifice a member or an instrument. It will be fine if someone picked all 5 singers. Or maybe two singers, a guitar player/back-up vocalist, a bassist and a drummer, that would provide for 3 part harmonies with a full band.

I hope this is clear enough.

Van Halen singing in harmony? You're kidding, right? Tell me you're kidding...

I interpret the rules as this:

1 role per person in the band except one of the people can sing backup and play their instrument as well. Also, you can pick to have additional, multi-role people, but at the cost of a pick. Right? For example, I could have Weird Al sing + 4 members, one of whom plays and instrument and sings backup. OR I could have Weird Al Sings lead and Play accordion + 3 members, one of whom plays and instrument and sings backup.

Right?

This is correct.

Since my supergroup dream has now been crushed, I am going to opt out.

Wait, I'm not cool with this if our lead singer can't play an instrument as well. That's just unrealistic.

I think the rules of this game are simple and we really shouldn't be having this much trouble.

You pick 5 band members. They all must play a different instrument and to only 1 you can assign as lead singer and to only 1 you can assign back-up vocals.

They all play a different instrument will not work. What about rhythm guitar? What if someone wants two drummers? I realize that we will not be able to encompass all band formations. If your lead singer needs to play rythym giutar, you can do it by only selecting 4 members and assigning one of them the duel position of lead vocalist and rythym guitar. Let us all remember the Police. Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland got it done with no problems.

I am still open to more debate, but I think we have it pretty close at this point. There is supposed to a bit of a challenge putting this together, as there is in real life.

Feedback?

I like the way you have it set up right now. Sounds good to me and it's probably the best way to have it. I don't think you can satisfy everyone's demands

By different instrument I did not mean you could not have more than one guitar player. A rhythm guitarist and lead guitarist are playing different "instruments" in my mind.

I guess we could get it done with a lead/instrument taking two picks in the draft (as long as it takes your current pick and your last pick of the draft and not two of your picks in a row), because I don't think I'd want to make a 5 person band anyway. But will the backup singer/instrument member take 2 picks? I hope not.

This is already confusing enough already (although I think you are starting to get it figured out) so let me try to confuse it up a bit more. Maybe there should be some "power-ups" or "perks" a la Call of Duty 4 to make this draft more interesting. Let's take two drummers. Maybe you could take the "Drum" or "Percussion" perk (or maybe name it after a band with two drummers? i can't think of any) for your band and that allows you to draft two drummers, but maybe it would eliminate your option to have any backup singer, or some other drawback.

Then you could have a, as was mentioned before, "Van Halen" perk allowing 3 members to sing at the loss of 1 instrument and 1 pick. (you would end up with 4 members though, just the last couldn't sing)

Maybe a "Beatles" perk where you get 3 members who can sing and play guitar but you lose a drummer (sorry Ringo). You could still draft a fourth member though

You would pick your perk at your first pick and it would allow for people to try to position themselves. There'd be more transparency this way and it'd be a completely different sort of draft than all the others. Its already different already, but this would make it really refreshing. Plus, we would have time to set up the rules of all these perks as we're still months from the beginning of this draft.

So far, my ideas have a poor track record. But, let me know what you think.

OK here is a question. How do you win?

Are people going to vote the merits of one band vs another in an elimination bracket kind of deal?

Will they take songwriting prowess into consideration?

How will you forbid them to recognize that you have five guys with great voices in a band, even if only two of them are allowed to sing?

Just curious on the judging criteria? If a band has 3,4,5 great voices in it how are people going to ignore it?

Kinda like people picking multiplayer games in the draft game board. If I have Elton John as my piano player, people will take into consideration his ability to sing, regardless of how the rules are set up.

and to write songs... presumably??

Yes exactly.

Since Kingzrool says he is open for further discussion I'll post one last time hoping he'll reverse his ruling, though I'm honestly not hopeful because it seemed like there were a number of people that came out in favor of allowing for maximum creativity that went unheard. Honestly, I can see no reason for having these rules other than to have some rules. The rules in most of the other drafts made sense - you can't allow certain albums because then it becomes an absolute free for all and if everyone wanted Stairway to Heaven they could pick hundreds of greatest hits or compilation albums after they got drafted. Here we're dealing with real people, you draft them, they're completely off the table. And these people have documented skills with tradeoffs for everybody. This is like drafting a fantasy basketball team and saying you won't count the point guards rebounds or the centers assists. In reality you might draft a point guard that can steal a few extra rebounds to make up for a weakness in the front court, and as Kings fans we've all seen the benefits of a passing big man. But I digress... back to music.

If you are going to pick Eddie Van Halen and tell me because he played some keyboards on 1984 that he can be a full fledged keyboardist as well as guitarist in your band for every single song I'm not going to buy it. But if you tell me that as part of their set he will showcase his versatility with a rousing keyboard-guitar mega solo, you might score some points.

If you pick a mega awesome guitarist who also sings odds are he's nowhere as good a singer you'll get if you go with a dedicated vocalist. Again, its on you to tell me why it works for the band if you want my vote.

Let's say you go with Geddy Lee from Rush on bass and also want keyboards and vocals. That is totally legit as he plays all three on most Rush albums. But outside of Rush his vocal range is very limited, in fact many people hate Rush because of his vocals. Also, you're not going to get any fanciful bass or keyboard solos out of him as you would if you went for some crazy bassist known for doing solos.

And what's to stop someone from drafting Trent Reznor, claiming his instrument is a computer or a synthesizer which basically can duplicate the sound of a full band and then loading up on vocalists so they can sing every genre imaginable?

Again these rules just seem to be in place to make rules, stifle creativity and allow for some interesting loopholes, plus be blatantly ignored by the voters at the end. Please let people draft whomever they want and assign them whatever roles they can document. When it comes time to naming the band you also explain how everyone fits together and if you're not compelling then you're not getting my vote.

Honestly, I had plans for a really crazy band, but its not like I was looking to exploit the system, I fully expected to finish in the bottom half of the seeding and get bounced in the first round because only 3 people even knew more than 2 of the people I planned on drafting. In the end the big names are going to win out.

So c'mon Kingzrool, humor us creative types and let us put together our dream bands unencumbered by rules that don't apply to real bands. Pretty please?

^^**** my idea, yours is more refreshing than any of it.

You have my vote.

The first rule of the Rock Band thread, there are no rules!

Thinking this over again, I'd have no problem with pdx's idea. But I still think I will follow Kingzrool's outlines with my picks regardless

I think it's in queue behind G3's thread. Things are slowing down considerably in these draft threads, though, as the summer winds down.

Alright, partly because tradepeja's post gave me a headache and also because I'd really rather not have to enforce many rules, I have decided to go with the following format.

You can pick 5 members. Each member needs to be assigned all duties upon pick. Members can only play one instrument with the exception of percussionists (can have range of typical and exotic percussive instruments) and keyboards (can play both piano and synthesizers). Any and all members can be assigned back-up vocals. The lead singer can play any instrument as well. Complex synthesizers that can duplicate any instrument count as one instrument. The member actually has to able to perform assigned duties.

Overall concept is how the band will sound in a live concert, no studio type editing/production will be considered as voting criteria. Song writing capabilities will not be a factor, however some voters may take it into consideration as a personal preference.

I'll probably use a different name than Rock Band Draft Thread, because I imagine that we will break out of that genre.

So pdx, are you in? The only thing you may not like is having to designate all duties upon the pick.

A couple spots are still left if anyone else wants in, otherwise I will settle for an even number of participants.

Jespher is in. If anyone else wants in, we need two more to make it 16, otherwise we will go like this.

This draft will commence after GGG's music draft starts. The starting of these will coincide with the ending of current draft threads.

MODS, as the movie draft is over, should GGG start hers now, or should she wait until whichever is through first between hot babe and car thread?

Yeah, I was hoping we could get this started sooner rather than later. I'm going to leaving the country in a month, which would make drafting difficult. But since this only have five rounds, things should go quickly once we get it underway.

Why should she wait?

At this point, since the Hot Babe thread is pretty much over as far as drafting is concerned, I'd say she can start hers AND you can start this one...

:)

I will be stuck at home all day Friday waiting for furniture delivery, so was planning on properly starting my draft at that point. I don't think I'd have time to write rules and randomize before then anyway, since I'm still getting used to having homework every night after a very lazy second half of the summer.

Also, just as an FYI, I'll be PMing everyone who expressed interest to make sure they're still up for it sometime between now and then.

Works for me. I bumped your thread from the second page and included the randomizer link for you.

I would like to have a mid-range pick, if you don't mind. This being at the tail of the snake really isn't that much fun.

:p
