Rock Band Draft - Round 6 (Wrap Up)

It was a joke, and the reasons for my pick may not be evident yet, but given what I'm going for there weren't a lot of options.

ummm. If ya got somethins to say about my man Jaco, goes ahead and say it. A wiki diss is weak sauce as we all know that he is widely considered the best.

Honestly...I've never heard of him. But that's OK, cause he seems like a nice man.

Have you ever heard of The Weather Report? Kind of a Miles Davis spin off band. I am not sure how nice he was though. In my experience, most skilled and creative musicians are either crazy or a holes or both. In fact, the better the musicianship, the nuttier the musician. Did you check the youtube clip? You would have heard of him if he was still alive and kicking.

It sure has run in fits and starts.... is it common for people to deliberate the whole 24? At this rate the rest of my band will join the drummer in the grave before we're done.

Sorry about the delay... the state budget crisis has me running around like a mad person...

I select: John Paul Jones of Led Zepplin as my bass player (sorry, no mandolin in this group)

John Paul Jones, to me, is the quintessential hard rock bass player, what more can really be said? He is low profile, quiet... he let's his music do the talking. He was a studio musician for ages and has worked on so much awesome rock and or roll... check out his wiki... there is too many to even try to list.

Great choice. I have my own rule not to pick 2 members of the same band, but I would have picked him had he been available by my next pick. I had him ranked #2 on my bassists list, above Claypool and below Flea.

lenny_kravitz_8x10_mid.jpg

Lenny Kravitz - Rhythm Guitar & Backup Vox (as well as anything and everything else depending on song)

And I got my glue man. When you start off with a great hard rock/metal guitar icon, and then come back with a great funk icon, how are they going to mesh? Well here is the guy I needed to be the bridge -- a funk rock icon to stick in between them who speaks both their languages. Also cements me as having hands down perhaps the coolest looking/most image conscious band in the history of bands. And here is the thing that made this a pick I've been crossing my fingers over, from the wiki:

"Leonard Albert "Lenny" Kravitz (born May 26, 1964) is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and arranger whose "retro" style incorporates elements of rock, soul, funk, reggae, hard rock, psychedelic, folk and ballads.

In addition to singing lead and backing vocals, Kravitz often plays all the guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, and percussion himself when recording."

A multi-instrumentalist supreme, which is why I have him off at rhythm so on any given song he could play just about anything and we can have all sorts of flavs. Glue guy for my funk metal fun.

Just to be clear, he can not be "assigned anything and everything else depending on song". Prince is much more multi-talented than Lenny and he only gets lead vox and lead guitar. This was pretty clear in the rules.

Members can only play one instrument with the exception of percussionists (can have range of typical and exotic percussive instruments) and keyboards (can play both piano and synthesizers).

I did not even assign Stevie harmonica for Pete's sake.

In Brick's defense, this whole one instrument only for the guitarists is not only frustrating, but confusingly unnecessary. I didn't even notice it till my last pick. I thought ever since it was decided in the thread leading up to this that this was a free-flowing draft where you assign members to what you want when you draft them and that's that.

Oh well, rules is rules.

What I've taken away from all the discussions is simply that you have to fill official roster slots in a kind of rigid manner (ie "lead guitar", "second lead", "rhythm" etc) but then in the wrap-up you have all the lattitude you need as you describe how your band's performance will go.

For example, in my wrap-up I will make it clear that Paul will go to the piano, Keith will pick up the bass, John will whistle, and Kanye West and David Archuleta will play maraca and tambourine during the "Imagine/Kumbaya/We Are The World" medley encore .

But I can't officially "assign" piano to Paul, bass to Keith, and maraca/tambourine to Kanye and David.

So anyway I don't think the multi-instrumentalist ability of Paul, Lenny, Prince etc... will go unrewarded in the end. Just can't be noted officially in the roster.

Pick #3, and my choices are still safe...Perhaps my crafty planning is paying off, or perhaps I'm thinking too far out of the box...Anyway, this pick will raise my Rock and Roll points exponentially, as this gentleman is the inventor, coinventor, chair, and creator of "Rock and Roll". Known for his intrepid lead guitar and soulful vocals, I give to you my next offering...

Pick #3: Chuck Berry (Lead Guitar/Vocals)

This will allow for several celebrity guest appearances with my band as well...Just think of Michael Jackson and Diva Plavalaguna in a dance off with Uma Thurman and John Travolta with this song

Or Chuck Berry playing lead guitar next to Michael J Foxx here...

Danny Carey - Tool - Drummer

Considered one of the top 10 drummers of all time. He's a huge part of what makes tool great.

I'm just gonna say, I made a big stink about the silliness of the 1 instrument rule a long time ago and seems a number of you complaining now all hung me out to dry and look like a whiney a-hole.

So stuff it :)

Damn, great pick! I was hoping he'd slip...

^^TRUTH^^

Anyways, Brick already pointed out that this concept can be easily redone multiple times. I propose that we stick to the rules as stated on the first page and if you feel strongly that you have a better set of rules, start your own band thread. Of course, you may have to wait in line. I have a couple other concepts that I would like to try, so I will most likely join up. Then I can ***** to you about your rules. :D

ok but next time, we should have the draft sort of Yahoo basketball style, with maybe 120 seconds to make each pick instead of all freaking day!

I don't care about fine points of the rules - I'd just like to see the thing move along

huh? These drafts are supposed to be slow.

To a point.

They aren't supposed to be rapid-fire where every participant has to be logged on simultaneously. Its supposed to be leisurely, fun, and above-all, a time-waster.

Haven't you been watching any of the other drafts?

Isn't he the Gap commercial guy? whoa... look out Sgt Pepper! :p

there comes a point when you have to stop putting together lists of all time greats and have to get down to trying to put together a coherent sounding band. ;)

Not that Lenny is any slouch mind you.

P.S. As for his multi-instrumental ability. Of course. He's the rhythm and backup vox man officially. But those are support roles that not every band even makes use of, and let's just say he is wildly overqualified for the post (as are many of the 5th/catchall choices so far. Steve Vai as a rhythm guy? ) and might get bored. :p I wouldn't have made that note about my lead guys -- they have enough to do. Here's the way to maybe get aorund it -- say the end result is what the band sounds like for one song. Then if someone said that they had one guy playing piano, harmonica and tuba all at once while singing backup vox and standing on his head, and it would just sound like crap.

Indeed... I could not agree more and you know I like your band.

and you'll see ;) I know exactly what I'm doing..........i think

But as far as "coolest looking/most image conscous" - well I won't select two guys from the same band so I'm not giving anything away here, but the coolest looking pair of guitar players ever in one band has got to be Keith and Ronnie going away - and I have the cooler half!
