Rebounding

I've Been a reader of kingsfans for a few years, this is my #1 post, I'm not sure whether it goes here or in personnel moves
In terms of coaching and personnel I think that the Kings would benefit most from better rebounding. The stats do not lie, this season the Kings are second to worst in rebounding differential in the NBA (only behind Golden State). The top two teams in positive rebounding differential are Utah and Dallas (scratches head). I think that rebounds would lead to more possessions, more second chance points and less second chance points for opponents; which would lead to more wins (especially all those ‘almost wins’).

However, I don’t just think it’s rebounding that is the problem, the person must also be able to score/hit an open jumper. In terms of Kenny Thomas and Justin Williams (he’s in the top 3 in rebounds per/48, but that doesn’t mean I’d necessarily play him), they both get the boards, but can’t hit the open jumper on the offensive end. Playing 4 offensive players against 5 defenders isn’t a good strategy. I’m offensive too;).

I think the Kings could do better on the boards, particularly the starting guards. Mike Bibby averages 3.2 boards/game, putting him in the top 50 for guards, but in terms rebounds per 48 minutes he’s 113th/179 according to NBA.com. Yeah, I know he’s short, but there are more productive guards per 48 of similar height. Kevin Martin similarly averages 4.3 boards/game making him the 18th in rebounds/game for guards, but he’s 49th/179 in boards per 48 mins. I’d like to see Martin step up and produce 6ish boards/game.

I’m not that familiar with the college game so I’m not going to say who I think the kings should draft, just someone who will rebound. Everyone is talking about drafting a big, I agree. However, there are some players who have expiring contracts I think Petrie should acquire who might help the rebounding stat.

Anderson Varejao (I know he’s already been mentioned by others) has an expiring contract with the Cavs and is due for a raise, but with James, Ilgauskas and Hughes with huge contracts, he will probably leave wanting more money. Not the best scorer, but a very respectable 28/203 in terms of rebounds/48 for forwards.

Bonzi Wells we all know he’s going to ditch his current contract with the Rockets, but would he be willing to play for the Kings again? Also, where would he fit in the rotation, some guards would have playing time diminished or the Kings would have to play 3 guards defeating the point of my whole rebounding rant.

Andres Nocioni currently with the Bulls. Could hit the open jumper, not the greatest rebounder, but I’d say it would be a combination of Kenny/Corliss. Currently, He’s missing games with plantar fasciitis, but I would want him. You can’t teach hustle.

If we cant stop anyone there wont be many boards to grab. Teams walk right in and get layups. Uncontested perimeter shots.

First, welcome to kingsfans.com It's always nice to see one of our "lurkers" decide to take the plunge and start posting. (Be sure and log into the "welcome" thread in the Lounge...)

I think that rebounds would lead to more possessions, more second chance points and less second chance points for opponents; which would lead to more wins (especially all those ‘almost wins’).

I agree that the Kings are in desperate need of someone who can put up double digit rebound numbers on a nightly basis. And I think your rationale is sound.

I don’t just think it’s rebounding that is the problem, the person must also be able to score/hit an open jumper...

I don't think it has to be an open jumper. I think the person we would get the most benefit from should be able to score, but I wouldn't mind if it was a post game. I really wouldn't... even though it seems any player with a real presence in the post comes here and tries to become a jump shooter. ;)

Nocioni wouldn't solve our problem, IMHO, and the plantar fasciitis alone would be enough to make me pretty leery of signing him. I do think the idea of Varejao is worth exploring, however.

Again, welcome!!!

Nice first post.

Im not sure i really want to see Bonzi back in a Kings uniform. Okay, be brought hustle and he can rebound - but is there a nasty trade-off in terms of team chemistry for having him ?

I have to believe that getting the right meld of players together holds the key to our future sucess. So on that basis i'd leave Bonzi out.

Welcome, Brinzotti! Yes, indeed, rebounding is a big issue for this team. You've touched on a couple of possibilities. The off season is going to be very interesting. I expect GP is going to address rebounding and a whole lot more.

I'm a little worried about Petrie addressing the rebounding issue through the draft, honestly. We had similar issues last offseason and picked up another combo guard instead of addressing this need. Can we even count on Brad starting at the other spot (either PF/C) going forward? He's been pretty awful this season. We will see whether it's the injury or age that has slowed him down. Even a guy like Varejao, while a unique player, is not exactly an offensive threat. Can anyone testify to his passing or other abilities? Watching the Cavs makes my head hurt. If there's any draft to gamble on a big, it's this one.

First post and I already officially hate you ;) And I agree with VF21 that jumpers aren't everything. Dunks are good too.

Nice post overall, lots of good points and welcome here. I just don't think that doing anything with Bonzi is a good idea. If we could get our hands on Crash or Mo Evans though... mmm...

Mo is only a Free Agent after next year, am I right? And Gerald will be too expensive for us :(

Oh well, let's hope to see more 12 rebounds nights from Baby Kevin and pretend that everything is fine. Our SOP in other words.

I'd love for us to get Anderson V. the guy really brings some great energy and rebounding and is young and dynamic. I wish we could get a young guy like that and rebuild for the future. We have such a black hole at the 4.

A guy like Andy V is a game changer while he's not so great on offense. Tyson Chandler and Ben Wallace are two others than can anchor a defense, but not ruin an offense. Having the offense only bigs has not worked out lately. Brad, Reef, Kenny, are all relatively decent on offense yet they are absolutely attrocious on defense. Brad and Reef are not only attrocious defensively but their reboudning is awful. If there's ever time to get J-Williams some time, it's now...

Problem with our frontcourt is that our best player at the 4/5 position is Corliss Williamson

That is not a knock against Corliss as he is a nice player but he doesn't defend very well and because of his extremely limited lack of athleticism he isn't able to get enough boards.
