Really?

JayBird

Bench
I have been a Kings fan since 1990, and a member of this site since July 2001. I consider myself one of the biggest Kings fans around (not to take anything away from any other members of this site), and I have literally lived and died with every possesion over the last 15 years. I haven't been able to post much because of recent family/school responsibilities, but I felt this, the DARKEST DAY in my history as a kings fan, was enough to get me to post.

Before Chris Webber, we were nothing. You all remember. Vf21, 6th, Bricklayer, all you other longtime fans, you remember what it was like to be the armpit of the league, to get stoked when we won 40 games, to be exhilerated when we finally made the playoffs. Those were bad times.

But with the signing of C-Webb, everything seemed to change. We had hope. For once, we had a future. With Jwill, Webber, Vlade, and Peja, we had a reason to be excited about our Sacramento Kings. Our GM and owners made a decision to keep the team focus on Cwebb, and build around him. And we did. And we had six straight seasons of playoff bound teams, and 2-3 seasons of elitism in the NBA.

I'll be blunt and say that #4 changed this team around, from a pretender to a contender. He gave millions of northern Californians a reason to hope and tune in every night. It may sound like I am giving Webb far too much credit, but I don't think it's unwarranted.

And now, Webber is gone. And what do we have in place of him? 2 no names, and an ex-King who is far past his prime. Way to go Geoff. Thank you for taking the air out of all loyal kings fans (not taking account you ridiculous peja fans who are stoked that your man is the new "leader" of a .500 team). Thank you for basically throwing in the towel, and looking to the FAR distant future for this club. Were you just waiting till you got your extension signed to crap all over this team?

I know everyone is overly sensitive tonight, and I'm sure I fall in this category. I just had to voice my displeasure with what has happened with this team this year. The season ends in a tough Game 7 loss, our star - one of 2 players who actually SHOWED up for the series against Minny- whines about the weakness of a certain small forward... then, the star in question is having a career year after MAJOR surgery, while the weak SF is having his most pathetic season, and clearly does not want to be here... So you trade the star? Really?

I wish CWebb the best, and as a poster on this site earlier said, I do hope he burns us the next few times around. I am a Kings fan first, always have been, and always will be, but the sadistic side in me wants everyone in this organization to feel the burn of making one of the stupidest trades ever. Good luck, Peja. Let's see where you "lead" this team.

Disclaimer: To anyone I've offended, I am sorry. Vf, Brick, if my ranting has annoyed you enough to the point to ban me, go right on ahead. I just really needed to voice my anger tonight. Goodnight ya'll...

No, feel free. I'm not exactly doing the cold detached thing myself right now. A little pissed actually. Think I may place a call to the Maloofs and see if I can convince them I can do a better job as a GM than THAT.

Geoff can't possibly be this stupid. The Magoofs must have had a gun to his head with orders to dump Webber at any cost.

VF21 stands and applauds...and takes a moment to remember the second game of the 1998-99 season. The short one...

It had been a long time. We had waited and waited for everything to be settled so the teams could get back to playing basketball. It finally happened...in February. We lost the first game on the road to the Spurs, I think, but there was something exciting in the air even at the beginning. Jason, Chris and Vlade. Wow. And the hype before the opening game in Arco. Against the Grizzlies. You'd have thought we were in game 7 of the NBA finals.

And guess what? WE WON! And the magic started. And last night, the last of the magic died....

Don't apologize, JayBird. Your post was right on!!!

So we wake up tomorrow and read that Petrie signed Lebron or Mello?
If that doesn't happen then YES, he and the Maloofs...well stupid
doesn't even cover it.

Can he trade any of these so soon?

I wouldn't mind seeing Webber burn the Kings either. It would be justice. The one player who seemed to be really passionate about winning is shown the way out. Good luck Sacramento.

Could this trade have to do something with Webber's injury?

Doubtful. If so, he would have been traded LONG ago, when the effects of the injury were so imminent that we had no choice. But disregarding lack of lateral movement and the inability to jump really high, Webb was BACK from his injury, and putting up 20-10-5. His injury had little to do with it, IMO.

I disagree. Webb recovers a bit but he is not as the same as he was. He said that he promised Maloof brothers a ring and still believed in that, but, GP and Maloofs don't have faith in him anymore. This season Webb's still showing his 10-10-5, but things may get worse in the future due to his age and injures. Kings wanna get some values back (although not much in this trade) now than later.

Understatement. Even if he isn't fully recovered, you gotta do better than Thomas, Skinner, and Corliss. If the only answer was to trade him now, FINE. At least get EQUAL value for him... not three scrubs.

It's Thomas, Skinner and Corliss. We did not get Dalembert.

Oh crap.

This season Webber is putting up TWENTY-10-5. TWENTY, not 10. TWENTY!!!!! And he is one of very few players active in the NBA today who can point to their CAREERS as having those kinds of stats. CAREER AVERAGES!!!

Webber is not the same as he was? Well, duh. He had broadened his game considerably and was showing more and more of his old form. He was getting lift on his multiple dunks, and he was doing a great job of helping Cat get integrated into our offense.

Your argument is beyond specious. It is totally without basis in fact.

Well, he's kind of right; Webber's not the same player that he once was, that being a phenomenal athlete with no heart, and nothing between his ears, and couldn't hit a free throw at gunpoint. What we had in that player's stead was a Chris Webber who, while not as athletic:

- Was a more reliable free throw shooter than ever before
- Was more of a clutch player than ever before
- Was a better decision maker than ever before
- Was more of a leader than ever before

And we just traded him for a ham sandwich... way to go, Geoff.

I feel like Arthur Dent:

"... I woke up this morning and thought I'd have a nice relaxed day, do a bit of reading, brush the dog ... It's now just after four in the afternoon and I'm already thrown out of an alien spaceship six light years from the smoking remains of the Earth!"

"Alright," said Ford, "just stop panicking."

"Who said anything about panicking?" snapped Arthur. "This is still just the culture shock. You wait till I've settled down into the situation and found my bearings. Then I'll start panicking."

With the moves that were made today, and more importantly, the way those moves were made, I can honestly say that I would be walking away from this franchise if it weren't for the fact that there are still a few players on this team to whom I've become very attached.

Its tough for me to admit that.

Five.....no, four hours ago, I never would have though that was possible. Four hours ago, I would have smacked the **** out of anyone who dared to post such an anti-team sentiment as that. Twenty-four hours ago, I was posting about how disappointed I was in the recent lack of fan loyalty!

Funny how things change.

As someone who is known for (I wouldn't actually presume to be known for anything, but its late and I didn't feel like wrestling with my brain for the appropriate verbage) being able to point out the positive in this situation, I'm finding it very hard to find anything even remotely positive in this situation.

Maybe that will change. Maybe I'm being overly dramatic right now. Maybe I'll go to sleep and feel a little bit better in the morning.

But, I don't think so.

The whole thing has left a bad tase in my mouth. So much so, that though the TEAM still has my support, I feel very differently towards the Sacramento Kings.

I agree with what Jaybird has said. I won't say this is the darkest day, but it's a damn depressing day. Who would've thought we would lose three core guys within a year and have little or nothing to show for it. I knew our ride with this group was coming to an end, possibly at the end of this year or next season at the latest. I never anticipated it would come in the middle of this season.

The pieces we acquired from this trade could've been gotten in the off-season if a move had to be made.

I guess this is what the term "window of opportunity" really means.

20-10-5, my typo. I don't think it's crap though. Well... everyone is kind of mad now. Just tried to think rationally why this trade was made. If it were not due to his age and injures, why do you trade him? Could you image the similar kind of trade happen before his knee surgury. I cannot.

i am also one who usually finds something positive when things go wrong. but right now, i'm just so devastated.

the wind was just knocked out of me. the passion i had for the team left with the departure of cwebb. i am very very passionate about the kings, but right now, i'm trying hard to get that back. chris isn't even my favorite player (he's a very close 2nd), but he brought a lot to the team. and to a fan such as myself, he meant a lot. so i'm definitely devastated.

i will still root for the kings. but something will always be missing. :(

I guess Bibby is your fav player. Imagine if Bibby has gone in return for Rod Stickland. That's how I feel. :o
