Re-sign Bobby J?

Showtime

Starter
The Kings obviously have a hole at the PG position, and if the team ends up getting Rubio, or another FA PG, Beno would most likely become the backup if he's not involved in a trade. However, there have been times where Jackson's toughness, energy, and competitiveness have been needed on the floor. So, what do the fans think about offering him a two year deal (one for next year with an option for another if he doesn't retire)? Obviously, this deal would be very low in salary, but he could retire a King and add depth to the PG position until that issue is resolved.

I would absolutely love to see Bobby retire a King. He's a tough player who can potentially rub off on a team of losers.

Maybe, really depends on who we bring in this off-season. He would be great for a young pg, but we all thought the same about Beno. Although Beno has no one to blame but himself for not improving.

If we have an extra roster spot, I say yes. If not, he would be a great addition to the coaching staff, and can still help develope a young pg. He could do what Byron Scott did for us as an assistant, and suit up in practice. That would not only help our next pg, but also allow Bobby to get his coaching career under way.

I would worry that if the Kings sign Jackson to a year + team option, he will be trade bait with K9 all year long.

Bobby has stated several times he would be willing to play for the veteran's minimum...and that he would like to explore coaching possibilities. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he's signed for another year. And I would have absolutely no problem with it if he were. Bobby does what he's asked; if we have a real coach who doesn't make Bobby play extended minutes, Jackson could be a asset especially in terms of setting the tone for heart, hustle, etc. in our younger players.

One angle on his situation is that the team really needs leadership. Not just on the bench in suits, but on the court. They have really young players, and if they could have that Vlade like presence of a teammate who is proven and respected, that might have an impact on guys.

I say sign him to a one year or two year deal and try to trade him to a team with a shot of winning it all. I think he deserves that atleast with all he has done for the kings. Then when he is about to call it quits sign him to a 10 day contract and let him retire with the team.

In a heartbeat!!!

Okay, I admit to a bit of bias since I have loved him from the day he put on a Kings uniform. Liked him before that. No one will ever give you more of himself.

Bobby's value goes way past what he puts on the floor during a game. If I were the Maloofs, I would hang on to Bobby on his own terms as long as I could. Players with his heart don't come along often, and especially not ones who deem Sacramento their destination. Bobby has treated this organization with respect, and we should do the same. Bobby needs to retire a King, and he needs to have the coaching door open for him.

I have a theory that non-star point guards make for the best coaches. You can prove it or disprove it, but there are a lot of coaches that were good, heady, point guards before they hung up the Jordans. Those that did not win on pure athleticism. The makeup of a point guard that has to defer to stars aligns itself with being a great coach; you have to check egos, smooth thigns over, direct the team, be a leader, call plays, know the playbook, play with your head (especially without elite athleticism). Bobby can and does do that.

I've said it before, but the Maloofs traded away all of our special, loyal pieces. They did it to retool on the fly, and in doing so, we lost some of the alliegence, some of the culture that they built here. Lakers, Celtics, Spurs, Jazz, Miami (an expansion team, no less), NY have a culture, a history, a lore. We lost the conference finals and traded our chance at that lore away. Keeping a 37(?) yr old aging pg on the roster might not be your best move, but the Kings need to stop the revolving door that has been going on lately(less we turn into the Clippers). We need to hang on to the players that gave us the best moments, and have those moments help lead the rest of the players. You build that lore up, and in good times and bad, you know you will come out eventually.

Keep Bobby. Get Christie. They're not The Logo, or Wilt, or Kareem, Parish, McHale, Russell, but they're all we got. We should be so grateful.

I'd rather Bobby sign with a contender and get a ring* if he still wants to play. Don't know how well that would go over with his family. I imagine coming back to Sac is fine because it's familiar territory, but transitioning elsewhere may be difficult.

*not with the Lakers, Celtics, Spurs, Magic.

I think it should be more on his terms. He wouldn't want much, and he knows what he'll be playing for if he stays another two years. If he wants to play for a contender, I say leave an open slot for him on the bench when he wants to come back. If he stays, he'll be our tough hearted veteran who will show the ropes to the youngins in need of a fres start. He himself said he didn't want to play more than 20 somr odd minutes a game at most. He knows he's at the end of his career. I have the utmost respect for him, and whatever decision he decides upon, I'll fully support it.

Culture and Lore

What a great post. I think this explains that hollow empty feeling that a lot of us fans have right now. It would be easier waiting on OUR team to get better, but instead we wait. We wait hoping THIS team can become that which we loved so much that we are willing to wait for years just for the chance it may return.

I was able to find a lot of this watching Mizzou basketball this season... a true team characterized by unselfishness, speed, no egos, ball sharing and the love of the game. It made me nostalgic for the Kings of yesteryear.

Amen.

I would throw more than the minumum at him because he is worth more than minimum. Then again the freemarket should determine his actual value, and if its minimum, so be it. If he wants a ring, he would have been bought out a while ago for pennies on the dollar. I think bobby likes the game more than the fame. Basketball is open to many interpretations, some consider the game a show of psyical dominance and tactical advantage. Others feel that the purity of the game is to be maintained & upheld above winning if neccessary. Both interpretation are right, and the rule book balances the two like branches of government. Bobby Jackson should be in uniform because no one on the Sacramento Kings roster balances dominance and purity quite like Bobby Jackson.

I say yes. A one year deal with a one-year option is hardly dangerous, and he is (by all accounts) a solid mentor with coaching credentials. Add a retirement clause whereby he joins the coaching staff when that day comes, and I think we're golden.

The guy bleeds purple. We need that right now. Keep him here.

SIDE NOTE: I'd trade Beno and the number one to get Rubio, making this even easier.
