I believe that Boogie has the skills to be an all-time great. I love his attitude. Even when he was pouting, I understood it and liked it. It wasn't an ego thing, he was pissed because he wanted to win and the team was not supporting him or his teammates in doing so.
However, if I were to grade out all the best players in the NBA, Boogie would get an "Incomplete," since we haven't seen him in the playoffs yet.
That's not a knock on him. I don't think there is a single player in NBA history who could have gotten to the playoffs if drafted by this team at the time he was, give the general dysfunction, lack of talent, and most importantly, the strength of the Western Conference.
I don't think you can honestly measure great players against other great players until you see them battle good teams and good players in 7 game series. The playoffs are what set apart Kobe from T-Mac and Vince Carter - all 3 looked very similar throughout the regular season, but playoff resume and tenacity makes the difference.
(Edit: For the record, I dislike Kobe for all the reasons I love DMC: a guy who is always happy and genuinely makes an effort to make friends with his teammates and make the locker room a family vs a guy who is all about himself, aloof, and runs great players out of town; a guy who blazed his own trail, plays a very unique game, and seems authentic and innovative vs a guy who derived his game from others, stuck to a narrow and self-serving path, and succeeded by grinding his way into the mold of others set before him. But then- you cannot deny how hard Kobe worked, nor how intensely he devoted himself to winning when it mattered. )
I hope Boogie vs Anthony Davis becomes a great rivalry, maybe even a generation- defining rivalry. But I want to see those games, and many more, before I can really say who Demarcus is.
