Our odds are slightly better than that though since we finished in a tie with Utah. These are the updated odds and there's still a chance we swap pre-lotto places with Utah whenever they do the coin flip. It hasn't happened yet.

I'm undecided if I actually want to win the coin flip. The 5th slot seems to have historically done better than the 4th spot. Yes, slotting in at 5 lowers our floor slightly with a slim chance of picking 9th, but winning 1-4 is what actually matters here.

Good point. From that link:

The pre-lotto odds are split. The coin flip is our place if neither are in the top 4

I understand how the odds work. This has come up before so this may be like the 20th time we've had this same disagreement. In my mental conception of how the draft lottery works, because the hopper is stuffed with numbers not team names and the number combinations are assigned to teams based on lotto seeding, and because the four number combinations drawn out of the hopper are what actually determine the draft order, that means TO ME that we won't actually know if we "won" the coin flip until after the number combinations are drawn and we see if any of those number combinations correspond to the 4th slot or the 5th slot.

You're going to argue that those two events (the coin flip and the lotto draw) have nothing to do with each other so we can win one without winning the other. And I disagree. I don't really want to write another essay about quantum physics so we can agree to disagree on this point.
