Kobe had 51 and still lost, which might be Kobe's epitaph at the end of his career. That got me thinking...how often does the losing team have a 50 point night from one of it's players?
Question regarding 50+ point games...

The thing that I remember most about that game, aside from the Webber's performance, was that after that loss to Indiana, we didn't lose to another eastern conference team for two years.piksi said:

It's a catch-22 for the Lakers to deal with. Kobe, as much as I hate him, is the best player in the league. As far as individual ability goes, he really is the next Michael Jordan. The thing is, since he is so good, he thinks he can win the game without the team. If he trys to do it all by himself (and I think I recall seeing the stats on TNT that Kobe had zero assists by the third quarter), it can't be done. But as David Aldridge on TNT pointed out, when Kobe does pass the ball, the other Lakers don't make their shots. Like I said in another thread, Kobe misses Shaq, as much as Kobe doesn't want to admit it.

The Lakers lost the game because of the stupidity of players like Odom and Brown. There's no way any team should lose up 5 with the ball with 30 seconds left unless they choke it away. The Lakers win more often than not when Kobe scores big. They were 6-1 in the past seven with him and he was averaging 40 a game in those. In his 62 point game they were up by 30 points when he left the game after three quarters.

In that game against the Kings, he sucked big time down the stretch, maybe lost LA the games. But his impact on the game is huge. Odom may have lost the game, taking the final shot and not giving it to Kobe, who actually can hit the big shot. Those arguments are relevant. If Kobe scores 50, all 50 go on the scoreboard. If 4 other starters can put another 50 up (the bench can help, too) the Lakers have a good chance of winning. I don't notice any complaints about Bibby scoring 40 (and very nearly losing, save a heroic 3 by our center)
