OSCAR ROBERTSON AWARD
Shareef Abdur-Rahim
Awarded to team's outstanding citizen, team's highest honor. By far the Kings most community minded citizen and could be considered when it is all said and done a great man. Gave it up for the team when he relinquished his starting position without complaint. then went on to have a huge impact off of the bench.
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER
Mike Bibby
The best season of his career on both sides of the ball.
He averaged a career high 21.1 PPG
Ranked in the Top 5 in 3 pointers made
Ranked in the Top 10 in minutes played
Ranked in Top 15 in Free Throw Percentage and Total Points
Played in a Team High 81 games
Though he will never be mistaken for Maurice Cheeks, Mike's defense as the season progressed improved. He kept this team afloat in the midst of change, he changed his physical body right in front of our eyes from the beginning of the season to where it is now. And in my opinion became the leader (along with Artest) he said he was at the beginning of the season. I always was on the fence whether the Kings should trade Bibby. But in my opinion he is one of the top 5 point guards in the league, and I hope he retires a Sacramento King.
MOST INSPIRATIONAL PLAYER/
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Ron Artest
Artest arvived in Sacramento amidst great scrutiny and controversy. He ends the regular season as the sole reason the team made a dramatic turn around. His defensive intensity, his enthusiasm for the game and his will to win lifted the spirit of this team without question. He gives this franchise a glimmer of hope to upset the 3 time defending champions San Antonio Spurs in the first round. Many questioned his shot selection and his bogging down the offense. But all he does is shut down the opposition's best wing player. The Kings:
Are in the top half in the league in FG% against
Top Half in the league in 3pt FG percentage against
Held the opposition to under 90 points in 18 games since he arrived (14-4)
He is the face of the franchise and gives the community basketball hope for the future.
MOST IMPROVED PLAYER
Kevin Martin
We saw K-Mart's game jump leaps and bounds from last year. the biggest improvement comes mentally in shot selection and confidence. He knows that at times he is the best athlete on the floor. And he uses that to his advantage more times than not. Statistics (GLARING IMPROVEMENTS)
STATS 04-05/05-06
GAMES 45/71
PPG - 2.9/10.7
MPG - 10.1/26.7
3pt Att. - 25/176
FG% - 38.5/47.5
3pt% - 20.0%/36.9%
Though I do not think he is ready to replace Bonzi Wells in the starting lineup at this time, I do think he is the Kings 2 guard of the future and will be a star in the league.
EXECUTIVE OF THE YEAR
Maloof Brothers
Although Geoff petrie is and always will be the front man upstairs, there is no question who pulled the trigger on Stojakovic for Artest. And because of that Joe and Gavin are the Executives of the Year.
TEAM LEADERSHIP AWARD
Corliss Williamson
Corliss has been a valuable part of this team more than he is given credit. Although Corliss does not play, he provides locker room leadership and guidance to other players, calls them out when they need it and is very accessable to the media.
MEDIA AWARD
(Award that recognizes the area's best media personality covering team)
Jerry Reynolds
J.R. covers the Kings better than anybody else in this area period. His knowledge of the game and his background of the team is a joy to watch. Nobody knows this team better than Reynolds, inside and out. he also wrote a book that chronicled the team's history in the city of Sacramento
