Preseason Grades v. Warriors 12/20

And this is where the problem started. He should not have been handed the keys his rookie year. He should have been made to play the team game. But Westfail did Evans and the team a disservice. ROY is his only achievement at the cost of being a better player and better team now.

Team game with who exactly? Our starting lineup that year was basically Reke, Martin, Nocioni, JT and Spencer. A team that won all of 17 games the year before without Reke. Literally the worst team in the entire league. We had no one for him to play with. In order to win games he had to be given the keys to the team. People are way too critical of Reke and ignore the situation he was playing in. Until this season, the team has largely consisted of scrubs/young guys. Let's see how he plays with some decent players around him.

He was hadned the keys his rookei year by Kevin Martin going down with injury after 5 games.

There was no other choice. What? Beno was going to save us?

And his ROY was an important thing for this franchise. People who don't like Reke don't like it, but frankly they can go bite me.

Please explain how winning ROY is important to the franchise.

It keeps fans in the building for one. Which in the case of a team that won 17 games the year before and had owners with happy feet barely headed off by a grassroots movement is abvsolutely critical. It might have kept Geoff employed. It kept us on the radar, if barely.

I argue that his style of play has driven more paying fans away then he has brought in.

what is this style of play? what is he doing so different from any other player in the NBA? i don't get it?

Are you trying to imply other NBA players don't dribble the ball?

Not for 24 seconds.

I think you are exaggerating the length of time he does this and unless you have proof, I highly doubt this drove away fans. I think the losing has drove away "fans" and to even elaborate more, you probably are blaming him for the losing ways this franchise has suffered through the last couple of years.

He dribbled his way to another player averaging more points than him a rookie averaging just 3 points less than him and oh yeah AND thats a big word because who else did you prefer to have the ball other than Thorton or Cousins last year if not Reke than who. Casspi, Thompson, Dalembert, I mean i would understand your argument if Tyreke was the only person scoring the ball. In fact in the 2 preseason games he has been outscored by 2 players in both games. Your argument don't hold water.

Tyreke is the cause of global warming, famine, disease, war, the economy, and the Lakers winning championships. Trade him for a bag of peanuts and an elephant, minus the elephant.

Dime Dropper can confirm what I about to write: I quit watching the Kings for a year or so until Tyreke came to the team. Suddenly there was something worth watching. His play brought me back to the Kings.

thats what the 20-5-5 sham was about...getting ppl to watch while all the while giving a young impressionable player with immense potential the absolute wrong idea.

My uncle gave up his tickets before last year due to the lack of ball movement. He didn't like the direction the team was going. He had tickets since 1985. People around my seats didn't renew last year for the same reason. I bet if the team did a poll why they didn't renew #1 would be cost/money, 2 would be losing, 3 would be style of play.

Fans got used to seeing passing and sharing the ball during the playoff years. Now it's dull in comparison.

On the first Kings possession last night when the ball was brought up someone behind me yelled pass the ball soon as it hit the 3pt line.

There. Fixed.

Sorry to continue to pick on arguably our best player, but over the last couple years, watching him attempt to get by a defender, get cut off, dribble back to the top of the key and try the same thing again is actually quite pitiful. That should not be allowed in junior high basketball. It happened less last year than his rookie year and i like the approach to more ball movement, its about time.

And btw....those ones who gave up their tickets are about to miss out on some real good Kings basketball. And once the Kings got Thornton and Cousins became more involved in the offense, the ball movement was just fine, even after Reke came back. So that argument is basically worthless.

People who make those sorts of cliams always ignore the fact that he was averaging 20-5-5 BEFORE the media caught onto it. If anything the push for 20-5-5 led to an exioplosion in his rebounding and assists down the stretch. Gee, what a terrible thing. Don't beleive me? You should:

Reke month by month 2009:

Nov: 20.3pts 5.5reb 5.1ast
Dec: 22.1pts 5.3reb 5.1ast
Jan: 20.7pts 3.5reb 5.1ast
Feb: 20.1pts 5.8reb 7.0ast
Mar: 19.4pts 6.9reb 7.5ast
Apr: 19.5pts 5.8reb 5.3ast

Yes, what a stat padder. I have made that point again and again. But those who like the opposite claim jsut read right over because they have no counter and it spoils their little hatefest. The MEDIA startied yapping about it incessantly. Its effect, if any, on Reke's game was that he picked up all the things that we WANT him to pick up. He was tiring near the end. Perhaps not surprising given that only one other player hsi age or younger had ever put those numbers up. But he was 20-5-5 long before anybody had decided they hated the idea.

Please don't expose the ignorance of our fandom to the whole internet.

Well, obviously minus the elephant! We don't want the elephant eating all the peanuts!

uh...obviously. Did you think that I thought that he was far from those numbers and the media, and our organization, made a push for him to average more points, rebounds and assists?

The guy was playing phenomenal, and maybe the attention encouraged him to grab more rebounds and assists. Thank you for copying statistics from the internet, but I was not surprised at all, I think you are missing the point I was making. The frenzy that ensued left an impression that everything was about him and how great he was...michael, lebron, oscar, tyreke? That can hurt the psyche of a young player and if you dont think it did, then I dont know what to say, I cant copy objective data into my post to support it. Of course, westphal didnt help that notion by giving him an almost free pass last year when he was riding other players. I am glad to see he is being held more accountable

Have to admit I'm pretty surprised by the Tyreke hate. He's still very young, he's extremely talented and if he can 1) cut down on TOs and 2) develop a reliable shot, then the Kings will have a GREAT two-way player. It's sad that people are so impatient, not all young players come into the league and have it worked out within their first two years. In fact, the vast majority don't. There is a lot of room for improvement here, and he has time on his side.

I do think a better coach with a stronger personality and influence would be fantastic for Tyreke's development, but I'm really discouraged by the negative attitude towards him. If Tyreke can work it out, he has a winning style of play. I don't think the team is as talented as some think it is, and the worse-than-expected performances often draw criticism from a subset of fans. Unfortunately, a lot of this blame gets put onto Tyreke.

I'm by no means biased when it comes to Evans. He has a lot to learn, and much to improve on, but come on, he's 22 years old. Patience!

Somehow I think many a rookie of the year has somehow managed to survive the hype, Blake's doing fine, and they already trotted out commericals for him, had him jump over a car, and resigned his best friend to a $10mil a year contract largely because he was his best friend.
