Don't Make Me Use The Bat
another day another game...

Salmons ( B ) -- put the pedal down and celebrated the release from Ron Ron prison with a big first quarter. Didn't do much thereafter besides get torched by Gerald Green and Josh Howard, but did set up Bobby nicely for his only bright spot of the night (an open corner three).

Moore ( C- ) -- not really effective at any point, and it was only minimally because of Dirk. Just seemed a step out of position for most of the night. Kept on trying his charge drawing thing, but never got their in time or in good position. Was uncharacteristically inefficient wiht his offense. May have chased Dirk off of a few shots with his length and made him a jumpshooter, but Dirk obvioudly had himself a pretty easy scoring night, so not like he had him locked up. Just a nothing night to top a whole pile of nothig from our natural PFs tongiht (Brad was good when playing the role).

Hawes ( A- ) -- got the start because of Brad's duuude violation this offseason, and did well with it. See? Told ya the answer with a kid with an ego like this is just insult the hell out of him to inspire him. Yesterday I went with your mother dresses you funny, I will have to cook up something equally fresh for tonight. Active on the glass and on defense, although still had struggled on the latter when people just took it right at him. Had some offensive moments while missing a lot of shots. But the outstanding theing he did this time out was pass the ball. In Brad Miller like fashion. Spencer has passing skills, but normally he has been prone to 1:1 Ast/TO type performances because fro every good pass he makes, he'll make a stupid one trying to force what is not there. But tonight it was almost all the good stuff, and he hit a variety of Kings with bullet passes for layups or open shots and made a real impact that way. Good growth game settling into a starting type role.

Martin ( B+ ) -- actually started off this one sluggish, but came on in the 2nd quarter getting into one of those hit every open jumper zones and scoring easy basket after easy basket. Seemed to run out of gas at the end of the period though, and only popped up here and there afterwards. Meanwhile while the Mavericks mysteriously started Antoine Wright, and he predictably sucked, every other wing player they had just went off, taking turns in scorching us inside and out. They got 68 points out of Josh Howard, Gerald Green, and Jason Terry in only 72 combined minutes, and one of those guys was frequently kevin's (nobody else was slowing them either).

Udrih ( B ) -- was invisible for almost the entire first half, and then suddenly popped up with back to back to back hoops in the late 2nd quarter to keep us witihn range. Followed that up with a strong third quarter as we got back into it, and had some effect again diving back into the paint to get boards and disrupt Mavs big men. After he woke up however, it was a strong performance as a scorer, not as the passer we saw there for a few games last week, and we sung through this Texas two step back to our accustomed 16 and 15 assist levels, rather than the 31 we had against the Clips. Held Kidd in check on the other end, but one gets the feeling that Father Time is doing most of the holding in check with Jkidd anymore.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miller ( B+ ) -- our best bencher tonight, and he's not even a true bencher. Had good energy on the boards off the bench, and had a long effective stint playing next to Spencer as the PF in the 3rd quarter. Never did much of anything offensviely, but you know that big board mashing Pf we've needed around here ever since we lost Webb? Well that was Brad Miller tonight.

Thompson ( F ) -- ouch. Ok I am calling this one right now -- Jason Thompson is not ready yet. Doesn't mean he won't ever be -- he's got some size and skills with the ball if he can ever get it together. But right now, struggling to adjust, looks awkward, and while today he did not look as rushed, he was largely ineffective. Very little of the positive to mention here. Got a low block on Gerald Green as he was falling sideways, tried a post move again -- unfortunately choosing massive Diop as his opponent. Missed that side jumper he has been missing all preseason, leading to a fast break for the Mavs. And got into foul trouble while being largely whooped by Brandon Bass.

Cisco ( C+ ) -- not effective off the bench in the first half. Joined the party of guys getting torched by Gerald Green, did nothing on the other end. Burned by Josh Howard as well, but did hit a three back the other way on him. Better offesnively after the break and contributed in the third, although the defensive woes continued while all those perimeter guys mentioned in Kevin's write up continued pouring it on.

BJax ( F ) -- another rough outing, and you have to hope this is just the old guy taking a while for his body to get up to speed rather then the old guy sliding away on you. Torched by Jason Terry for much fo the night, answered by juct chucking up long misses.

Thomas ( C ) -- bit alarming that he entered this one in the 2nd quarter of a game that we claimed was the one where we would be starting to shorten our rotations in preparation for the regular season. Stole minutes from Thompson, and given Jason's performance tonight, maybe he should have. Kenny even started off looking ok again -- blocked out on the boards, and recorded his first blocked shot since the 2006-07 season. In fact could have almost had two, as it looked like he might have gotten Green cleanly on one drive. Of course also had one of his Kenny Thomas special steal and then throw the ball away turnovers, and made several of his normal assortment of bonehead mistakes. After the positive start, the minutes got awfully empty there however. Wasn't on the glass, wasn't scoring.

Greene ( INC ) -- in for garbagetime. Missed his only shot (a three of course), but it was in rhythm rather than forced at lrast. Grabbed a couple of boards. Not much hrre to go on.

Brown ( INC ) -- garbagetime. Looked for his own shot again, and got to the line. Seemed to be studiously ignoring Shelden when he called for the ball.

Williams ( INC ) -- ineffective on defense as the Mavs were just steamrolling us in the 4th, but surprisingly effective on offense in the up and down game, including a flying breakaway dunk.

JT is lookin ickier every game..

...I'm going to hold out hope for him though. But I'm not really expecting him to contribute much this season...If you cant steal minutes away from Mikki or KT then you need some work.

..But I dont doubt that he'll put in the work. I love everything I'm hearing about his drive and heart.

...I still wish we drafted Speights though

I feel that Thompson is more of a project than most people realized. His late growth spurts and recent guard status mean that he still has to get a feel for his size, not to mention the NBA game. I don't want to make excuses for him, as his play hasn't been that great, but I think he's more of a 'wait and see' than a ready to play guy (Martin was a project from a small school once upon a time). His size, quickness/speed, and athleticism bode well for him. I just hope that he can outplay Thomas for minutes as the season progresses.

Of all the "bigs" JT is the fastest and most running oriented. Saw him get a rebound and go the entire length of the court for a dunk and look good doing it (as that the Mavs game or the Rockets? doesn't matter, point made). Rookies have good and bad games and good and bad periods in games. Part of the overall process. But his speed and quickness for a guy 6-11 will be a BIG benefit when he learns the NBA game a bit more.

Loved Hawes game. Showing longer flashes now of he real abilities.

Williams just isn't showing me much. A shame tho' as he has the PF body but not the consistent toughness so far on defense and seems to force his down low offense.

Brown has a ways to go and still needs to calm down a bit to make better decisions.

Greene has a ways to go too but definitely shows flashes, brief as they may be, of the SF upside. He too needs to calm down a bit, all a learning process.

I tend to agree with this assessment. Although it's still way, way early, none of the big guys drafted after Thompson appear to be tearing it up (at least statistically) in pre-season, although Brook Lopez and Javale McKee (of all folks) appear to be in front. Speights, Randolph, and even Ryan Anderson have similar stats to JT's in this early stage. But again, this is pre-season.

JT needs to learn how to take his time. Too many rushed, wild shots inside, a common rookie trait.

You can still see he has the body and potential to be very good. I would not expect major regular season minutes from him for a while, but he should definitely be in the rotation for 8 to 12 a night.

JT clearly is a work in progress. I cannot help but recall how many people said Kevin Martin would never be a success...

I still like the pick and I have no doubt Jason will work hard and grow into the role.

Agreed. Rookies will always have good games and bad. JT had a couple of good games in the pre-season and I thought he looked good against Houston despite meager stats. We just did not throw it to him in the post, but he hit both of his post moves against the Rockets. Last night he was terrible. Welcome to life as a rookie in the NBA.

I'd subtract a grade for Moore and Miller. Our bigs are terrible on help defense. Our guards can't keep anyone out of the paint and our bigs are terrible at rotation, although personally I see Hawes and Thompson actually trying to do it, but just not recognizing the situation as fast as they will with another year or two of schooling.
