Possible Botched Call Last Night?

Can anyone explain to me what happened on the play where Cisco forced Bowen out of bounds? I thought that was a turnover, and they went to commercial, and when the game restarted, it was San Antonio's ball.

I am not sure on this, but Grant and Jerry thought it was a turnover. But then they said Bowen called timeout before he went out of bounds.

I think thats right though.

Bowen didn't call anything. Possibly Popovich?

Coahes can't call timeouts until next season... If anyone has a clip, or a tivo of it, maybe that would help. Because even the commentators were very confused as to what happened. Not only that, but you can't call timeout while falling out of bounds, only if you have some sort of balance. It was very weird, it appeared that he never called one, but maybe he yelled it as he was falling out?

From VF21's pbp,

"Spurs ball. Bowen loses the ball oob. Popovich screaming like a madman that Garcia shoved him... and... well... he might have but the offiicals didn't call it.

;)

Time out and commercial.

Kings ball after the break."

and then

"Oops. Sorry. Spurs ball....

I guess they did see Cisco..."

yea i heard the timeout explanation also- but when they replayed it...he wasnt even close to giving a time out signal + he was going out of bounds...so im assuming they called a foul on garcia..could probably check it with the game log from nba.com and see if garcia got a PF around that time..but im wayy to lazy to care

When they slowed the slow motion replay you could clearly see that it was not a foul. There was a little contact but definately nothing that was foul worthy.

It isn't about a time out. If you're shoved oob, you don't lose possession of the ball.

Bowen was falling out OOB, called a timeout with the ball in his arms and made a little "T" with his hands.

Actually, it is about the timeout. If no timeout is called in that situation, it's either a foul or the Kings ball. Garcia had no PF's in the game, so they did award San Antonio the timeout before Bowen stepped out. I do have a question, though. This is an NBA game right? And the botched call that is a concern is this one??!!

Amazing. I could have sworn it was a non-shooting foul against Garcia.

But, as you say, of all the botched calls, non-calls, etc. I can't work up too much of a tizzy over this one...

If Bowen called a time out, the Spurs burned a time out they weren't able to have in their possession for later.

Bottom line. I looked again and we still have the W.

:D

Yeah it was a timeout given, the timeout sign went on the screen at ARCO. Although I think Garcia DID force him to turn over the ball, but hey it all worked out in the end!

Now that that's settled, there was something else I saw that I haven't heard anybody else mention, although I'm sure somebody has and I've missed it. Did anybody else notice that Ginobli elbowed Artest in the mouth again, almost the same way as he did in Game 1. They didn't call a foul even though Artest motioned for one later when the play was over. I didn't see it at first but a rewind of the TiVo confirmed it. Just something to remember as the series continues.

I didn't see it but I hope the Kings did. If so, they can point it out to the league...once might be incidental. Having the thing happen again would certainly raise at least a small flag of concern, IMHO, even if my name is Stu Jackson.

not that it mattered in this case, but any player on the court for the offensive team can call timeout, not just the guy with the ball, when the ball is in play. when the ball is not in play, i think a player on the court for either team can call timeout.

I saw it... Well I didn't see the eblow... However, I saw Artest yelling at the ref, and moving his elbow back and forth, as if to say that Ginobli is elbowing him... Artest did it for about 6-7 seconds, and he was obviously upset. The camera stuck on Artest for the whole time until the ball was inbounded, but the commentators didn't comment on it, because they were talking about something else at the time. Tivo anyone? Sorry, but I can't remember the quarter. But I think it was either in the first or second quarter... But don't hold me to that, it could be at anytime in the game. I know that's asking alot to scroll through the whole game looking for it, but if anyone that Tivo'd it gets curious, and want to look for it...

Yes, this would be interesting to know more about from anyone with Tivo!

Basically, it was similar to the first play of game 1. About 4 minutes to go in the first half, Ginobli and some other Spur run a pick and roll. Artest fights over the top of the pick and Ginobli tries to drive between Artest and Miller. As he dribbles with his right hand, Ginobli swings his left arm back like he always does and it lands in the face of Artest who is a little behind him bending low reaching for the ball like he always does. Artest head snaps back a split second later, and after Ginobli dribbles back out and throws the ball out of bounds Artest motions about the elbow.

You can't actually see the contact from the ESPN2 angle, so who knows if he got hit hard with the elbow, or just a little contact was made, or maybe none at all and Artest was just acting (doubtful from what I've seen of Artest).

I didn't really want to make a big deal of it, but during the halftime interview you could really see Artest having issues with his lip. I think he's got to maintain composure because he'll probably get hit again before the series is over. He did a great job of that this game, maybe not so much in game 1.

P.S. Sorry to cause the confusion... :o
