Player workouts for Kings

Entity

Hall of Famer
I was looking through Hoopshype and it gives a list of players that have worked out with teams and the date they worked out. Interesting that the Kings have been looking at alot of PG and SF. In fact 2 players have been invited back and worked out twice for the kings.
1. Marquin Chandler 6'7 SF from San Jose State
2. Deron Perkins 6'2 PG from Santa Clara

Also of some interest the Kings went almost 2 weeks with no workouts and had a High School PG work out this past week and he is project to be a first round bubble pick by the name of Louis Williams.

Now my point is. It looks like they have their mind made up at the SG and PF spots and are looking toward the future with PG I'd say looking for the next Bobby Jackson or maybe a trade invloving Jackson is in the near future. They have worked out some PF and also C.J. Miles.

Great. They are trying out another 6' 7" PF. Why not just keep Kenny Thomas if you're going to do that?

chandler is a Small Forward. Any thoughts on why we are looing at PG and SF so much?

Relax . . .

A couple things:

(1) I doubt this is a complete list of workouts. I saw a Kings schedule for workouts a while ago and it included a lot more names. Not necessarily BIG names, but . . .

(2) Rarely do teams in the twenties get a lot of guys projected for the first round willing to workout for them. Their agents (along with the rest of their support staff) are convincing them that they are lottery picks. Do you think Chris Taft really believes that he will drop to 23? I'm sure he's been told he's a "lock" no later than 14 or 15 or whatever. This is because . . .

(3) Prospects and their representation only view workouts as a chance to move UP. Thus, the Kings are going to get a lot of guys who are/were projected for the 2nd round willing to work out for them. Guys who already think they're a lock for the 1st round not only don't want to workout for teams below where they think they'll be drafted, but view additional workouts as another risk for injury.

(4) Finally, workouts are actually a pretty minor part of the draft process. The Kings scouting department (or Petrie himself) has likely seen any of the players the Kings would consider drafting. The exception might be HS kids who weren't expected to declare but did anyway, like CJ Miles or Louis Williams, which would explain why they came in for workouts.

The Kings won't pass on someone just because they haven't worked him out. They've done their due diligence regardless.

Hoopshype's list of workouts is hardly a complete list. They probably have less than 1/4th of the actual workouts attended by potential first-round picks listed there. It's nice to get some info on the workouts, but it'd be almost impossible for them to track it all.

This is true. I remember Gerald Wallace saying he was surprised the Kings took him because they hadn't come to see any of his workouts and he hadn't put on a private workout for him. They'd had his name on their radar screens since his junior year of high school.
