Pistons waive Josh smith

If he was bad enough to be released by the Pistons, I am not sure any contender will be so excited to bring him into the locker and possibly ruin the team's chemistry.

I think a stable winning organization like dallas or SA could bring out the best in him, for all his faults he is still an incredible athlete, playmaker and defender.

A team like Dallas or San Antonio might be what's best for Josh Smith; I can't imagine that either Rick Carlisle or Gregg Popovich believe that Josh Smith is what's best for them.

Well... This is kind of surprising. So I believe that there is a period now (a day or 2) where teams can claim him off waivers, and the highest offer gets to keep him. If he clears waivers, he can sign with whoever he likes. I think he is worth the gamble. We wouldn't have to give anyone up.

Eh? I thought that waiver priority was based on the salary cap? Team lowest under the cap gets first dibs, and so on. I didn't think that how much was offered had anything to do with it?

Not exactly. Any team may try to claim him off waivers and they would then pay the entirety of his contract. If more than one team makes a waiver claim then the team with the worse record gets him. If no team makes a waiver claim (very likely IMO) then he becomes a free agent.

My top-5 predictions for a Josh Smith destination: (1) Kings, (2) Kings, (3) Kings, (4) Rockets, (5) Kings. ("Josh Smith? Josh Smith?")

I believe there is still a chance we can get ATL Smith. The same guy who broke the record for youngest NBA player to 1000 blocks! Lets go PDA!

The thing is that in order to claim him off of waivers a team has to have enough room under the salary cap to pick up the entire current year of the contract (i.e. Smith is a $13.5M salary cap hit this, year, so you have to have $13.5M in space). There is only one team with the cap space to claim Smith off of waivers: Philadelphia. Fat chance the Salary-floor Sixers are going to try to pick up nearly $40M over the next three years. So Smith will clear waivers and then sign for the minimum wherever he wants.

Is he worth a flyer at the minimum? YES YES YES YES YES YES YES. Will he sign with us? We're not really a contender, so I kind of doubt it.
