Pistons to sign Maurice Evans to offer sheet

Pistons make offer to Sacramento player who would back up Prince

Wednesday, August 24, 2005 By A. Sherrod Blakely

AUBURN HILLS -- The Detroit Pistons have been one of the best NBA teams at finding top-flight talent at a bargain basement price. They may have found another gem in restricted free agent Maurice Evans, who will be offered a multiyear contract as early as today.

The Sacramento Kings, the team for which Evans played last season, will have seven days to match the offer that will start at about $1.5 million per season. The length of the contract has yet to be determined.

Acquiring Evans would address one of the Pistons' biggest offseason needs -- acquiring a backup for Tayshaun Prince.

Team officials said repeatedly following Detroit's runner-up finish to the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals that finding a suitable backup for Prince a key part of the offseason.

There was a noticeable decline in Prince's play during the playoffs at times, something team officials believe was caused by him logging too many minutes.

Detroit didn't address the need during the NBA draft. Instead, they drafted a pair of power forwards (Jason Maxiell and Amir Johnson) and a point guard (Alex Acker).

The Pistons didn't address it earlier this week when they reached a two-year, $7 million deal with veteran center Dale Davis, a deal that took them out of the running for small forward Michael Finley.

While Evans isn't all that familiar with the Pistons roster, he does know Detroit's new head coach, Flip Saunders. Evans, undrafted when he left the University of Texas in 2001, spent his rookie season with the Saunders in Minnesota. He appeared in just 10 games for the Timberwolves. After that, Evans took his game to Europe, where he dominated the competition.

The Kings recognized his ability, and brought him back to the NBA last season, when he averaged 6.4 points and 3.1 rebounds while shooting 44.2 percent from the field and 32.9 percent from 3-point range. He made 11 starts for the Kings, including one against the Pistons on March 6. In that game, Evans had 12 points and nine rebounds in helping the Kings to a 100-85 win.

Even more significant was during his 37 minutes against Detroit that night, the 6-foot-5, 220-pound Evans more than held his own defensively against 6-7 Richard Hamilton and the 6-9 Prince, who each struggled offensively in the game.

If the Kings do not match the offer for Evans, Detroit will have the NBA-maximum 15 players with guaranteed contracts. Acker, the last player selected in June's NBA draft, signed a one-year deal with the Pistons but it would only become guaranteed if he were on the roster in January.

It would be nice to retain Mo, but at what expense? Not only will he cost upwards of 1.5 mill per year, but Garcia and Martin would be shoved to the very end of the bench with him on the roster. I don't see any way that the Kings re-sign him other than to somehow work a S&T, but that seems unlikely.

If we do match, then where does Songalia stand? Match them both? I think not. I hope Petrie doesnt stop there and gets a legit 6th man for the bench. Im not convinced about our bench yet.

Well, this establishes his value which is all we were looking for before deciding how to proceed. Don't see room for him here and Detroit is the only one to sign him so I don't think there's a lot of interest in him at this point in time. Does Detroit, with 15 contracts, have anyone we would want in a S&T?

If Kings match, then where is Mo in rotation given we have 3 SGs now and 3 SF? He is athletic but inconsistent. Sorry to see him go but go he will.

how much money does the kings have under the salary cap rules to match??? they used the whole MLE on SAR, so how how much money can they match up to since they don't have early bird rights on Mo??? do they still have the LLE???

Id play Mo over Corliss...

Yeah...I thought the deal was we could only match with our MLE when it came to Mo, therefore signing SAR pretty much meant we were out of the running. We have no LLE this year since we used it last, and we have no rights just to match him above the cap. Is there something I'm missing? Or did the Michigan writer simply not understand the full situation?

The only thing I can think of is if it is the range of the qualifying offer. I think I remember someone giving the figure of $1.75 million that the team could match to, but I had assumed that was someone mistaken that we still had the LLE. Does anyone know what the dollar amount of the qualifying offer was?

From the Sac Bee, July 20: "The Kings have continued to speak about re-signing their own restricted free agents, forward Darius Songaila and swingman Maurice Evans. However, because the Kings will have the right to match offers to those players, they likely will wait to see what offers those players can bring back. The Kings can match any offer to Songaila up to approximately $5 million without using their midlevel exception. Any offer Evans receives exceeding the approximately $860,000 qualifying offer the Kings extended would require usage of that exception."

Looks like he is as good as gone with SAR getting the MLE.

Okay -- yep, that was what I thought. Actually as I see it there is NO way for us to match that deal in that case, so he really already is gone now.

Have fun chasing a title Mo. Good pickup for the Pistons.

Good pickup for the Pistons of a yet another solid player that was unnecessarily riding Adelman's pine.
He will be a nice addition to them.

So that said, essentially were going to stick to Songalia and either resign him to stay as backup to SAR or resign him to a S&T, correct?

Either a S&T, sign him and trade KT or just let him go. I don't see both him and KT on the roster come training camp.

I really do hope that we keep both Mo and Darius...They are both very solid backups... In my option I think Mo is WAY better than Kevin Martin...Martin has way to many TURNOVERS!!! In the summer league this year he averaged 6 turnovers a game!!!!Thats very very bad, also his defense and 3-point shooting is not nearly as good as MO's...The Kings have 13 players under contract...I personaly think the kings should go over the cap this year and get MO and darius...Then our bench will be complete

can't really see petrie letting darius go for nothing; hopefully one of the first two scenarios comes to fruition.

Well, everyone knew it was coming, just not where... I'll really miss Mo, but really good pick-up for Pistons. He'll be doing the same he would of been for us had we kept him, being a great back-up.

I don't even know if we have a choice of keeping either, but with the current Kings roster I would rather keep Evans than Songaila.

Speaking of Detroit, they are in talks of trading Sheed for Chandler and Nocioni. Go figure. I hope thats BS. If I were the Bulls, I would say NO to that. This according to Hoopsworld.com
