Also, I don't know if anybody agrees, but the level of play in the league has grown by leaps and bounds even since the Monarchs won just two years ago. that was on display in this series. So as a fan of the "W" I commend both Detroit and Phoenix and all of the teams in the post season for playing above and beyond my expectations.
I'll agree with this, even though I don't agree with much else: for starters, unless you're particularly thin-skinned, I don't think that there's a team in the WNBA that could legitimately be classified as "unprofessional" or "unsportsmanlike," Detroit included. I don't actually think that there's been a team in the league that could be considered either unprofessional or unsportsmanlike since Tot Byears and Nikki Teasley were both playing for Los Angeles. In fact, if I sat down and tried to make a list of the most unsportsmanlike players in the WNBA, I personally don't think that anybody from Detroit would make my Top 5.

I also happen not to think that Laimbeer is either a buffoon or an embarrassment to the WNBA; if there's any coach in the league that's either of those things, it's Mike F. Thibault... personally, I was more embarrassed when Boucek had her "fainting spell" at the end of the San Antonio series than by anything that Laimbeer has ever done as a coach in this league.

As a basketball player, I live in the post, and I'm partial to post play, so I've never liked to watch catch-and-shoot offenses. I do enjoy watching Pondexter play, and she's practically the only player on the Mercury that will put the ball on the floor and attack the basket. Hell, I would have watched a series of best-of-five pickup games between Pondexter and Tweety Nolan.

But, back to the point I said I was agreeing with, there's no question that the quality of play in the league is substantially better, and continues to improve. For probably five years running, each Finals series (and the playoffs in general) has been better than the one before. The quality of play in the league at large has improved by leaps and bounds, and it's led to a trickle-down effect that has influenced the improvement of the college game as well. I love the fact that we're seeing more and more great athletes make it to the WNBA and, I believe that as the athletic level continues to increase, the interest in the league will follow; I don't think that it takes dunking, but seeing more superior athletes like Pondexter, Tarausi, Nolan, Ford, Brunson, Jackson, Dupree, Price, Young, Augustus, Beard, Currie and McCarville playing alongside the technical stars like Lawson, Powell, Taylor, Hammon, Bird, Sales and Douglas will help the league in the long run. I just hope that a few more of these people who claim to like women's basketball will show up to support the teams, because we can't have great players contemplating not playing for the league because they're not getting paid, and the owners aren't going to pay these women if nobody's going to the arenas.

Yep!!!

I was very impressed with the level of play in this series and throughout the playoffs.

Secondly, the Mercury play such a wonderful style of basketball, that is very pleasing to the eye and with solid coaching can win. And they proved it. I am a proponent of putting the ball in the basket and having a skill set that most times can trump the whole beat em up, grind em out, style. Now I know that it diametricly against my beloved Monarchs whose style is closer to Detroit than it is to Phoenix, but I am hoping that at some point the Monarchs can strike a balance and place more emphasis on offensive skills, even if that means sacrificing just a little on the defensive side.

Also, I don't know if anybody agrees, but the level of play in the league has grown by leaps and bounds even since the Monarchs won just two years ago. that was on display in this series.

GO MONARCHS!!!:)
Ditto... Ditto And More Ditto

The Game has most certainly grown leaps and bounds since We won in 2005. The styles have morphed to a faster and up-tempo Eye Candy deal that is very enjoyable to watch and also very easy to market.

My frustration with us at this moment is that we have the athletes to run like this. The Monarchs as a team are far more athletic than Phoenix and even perhaps Detroit.
And I will go further and say outside of Cappie and maybe Kelly Miller The Monarchs are faster and more athletic at every position than the Mercury. Well pre-injury anyway.

What we lack is the skill set. What I applaude Phoenix for doing is showing how significant Knocking Down open shots is. We have a solid defense. But getting one stop after another after another only to not score puts tremendous strain on a defense. I realize that the new trendy term is to get an athelete who can "Create her own shot," or "Break Down her defender" ala Cappie. But if we had just been able to knock down opoen shots here or there our defense could have been that more potent. And throughout the last few years we have had more than our share of open shots. Shots that we either didn't take or took reluctantly.

So during the off-season I hope Team Jen-nay takes a hard look at what is happening in the league and tailor our team to compete with it.

I don't think that it takes dunking, but seeing more superior athletes like Pondexter, Tarausi, Nolan, Ford, Brunson, Jackson, Dupree, Price, Young, Augustus, Beard, Currie and McCarville playing alongside the technical stars like Lawson, Powell, Taylor, Hammon, Bird, Sales and Douglas will help the league in the long run.
If I am understanding this quote correctly I disagree with Taurasi and McCarville being Superior Athletes. They are playing at a high level and Diana has been given superstar status.(rightfully so) But I would hardly put them in the Superior Athleticism catagory of Nolan, Brunson Dupree etc. And I might add Penny Taylor to that Superior Athlete list.

In fact Taurasi and JMac make the arguement for the "Technical Stars" being in the league like a Lawson and Powell, cause while she is playing at a high level DT is not the best Athlete at all. What they are is highly skilled, and JMac has an outstanding skill set for her size. And for me it is nice to see the league show an appreciation for those whose skills compensate for the "Lack of athleticism".

I am ready to go to the Skillz Club with the Monarchs. Lets fine tune it and get our Trophy back in 2008

They may not be able to jump out of the gym, but both of them are faster than the average player at their respective position, and have games built in part on being able to blow past the person guarding them; that's athleticism, not skill, and it's not something that you're ever going to see a player like Hammon or Lawson do.

In other news, it's been twenty-eight hours or so, and not a peep out of Kstat... imagine that...

Although coach Lambier is a smart coach, he can & is at times unbearable.
Maybe because he's always miked & you can hear his big mouth.
Even sitting courtside I personally got tired of his antics. He is constantly in someone's ear. I know he's good for the game, but that doesn't make me like him any more.

I too enjoyed this series, the level of play was exciting. The Mercury have a special young group of players...Taurasi could be super star status, if she can get her mental game going. The future of the Wnba is a bright one...lots of new talent coming in next season. I know coach B. & Whiz will be on it...trying to bring more of a up-tempo style.
