Petrie took a shot at the new Owners

Here's the interview. I didn't sense any cheap shots. It was a great interview...

Thanks for posting. He said he understood the new ownership needs to have a team that they are comfortable with but he didn't expect the St Valentines Massacre. How he was hired and didn't fire anyone. Each person can be the judge about whether that is snarky or not. I read it as a guy that is sad to see a lot of his co-workers that he describes as family being fired.

The more interesting point was his bristling about the use of analytics and how important character is : used Danny Green as an example of how analytics fail. That certainly says a lot about his philosophy and does not surprise me. I think the GM game has grown in a way Petrie is not entirely comfortable with.

i gave a listen, and i wouldn't say petrie "took a shot at the new owners." i may be reading too much into it, but i do think he was projecting a bit. he won't ever say so, publicly, but i imagine he has some really complicated feelings about the maloofs. they were 100% on board during the glory days. they opened up their check books, they treated GP like family, and they helped give him the best stretch of his career. that said, he has to harbor at least some resentment for the way the maloofs helped to torch his reputation beyond those glory days...

despite the maloofs' terrible stewardship of the franchise in the last seven years, i'm not one who absolves GP of all culpability. that said, i'm also sensitive to the fact that he very clearly was not operating with owners who were committed to building a winning team, and it has reflected very poorly on his resume. in a league of "what have you done for me lately," petrie's recent work will not earn him the kind of position or regard that he enjoyed in sacramento for so many years, should he decide to pursue further opportunities. the same goes for his son and the rest of his staff...

though it was a small barb aimed at new ownership, it might as well have been aimed at the maloofs, who were cause for the poor record of the kings' previous front office. however, even with a stellar record of success, there were never any guarantees that anybody would have been retained. it's the hazard of the job, and, while petrie knows it, i'm also quite certain he doesn't hold a black-and-white feeling about it. i can't imagine working for the maloofs is anything but complex, and i can't imagine what his private thoughts might actually be regarding the circumstances surrounding his ouster...

I would give anything to be able to convince Petrie to write an honest, tell-all book.

This tweet doesn't deserve a thread of its own, and so I wasn't sure where to post it. Since this was under Petrie's watch, I'll post it here. Take it for what its worth. An unnamed source.

Well, it won't copy and paste for some reason. Basicly it said that the Kings lockerroom was poisonous. That players were actively tweeting and talking on their cellphones while Smart was at the chalkboard going over game preparation. The Tweet, which I can't get to paste was from a Washington newspaper. The unnamed souce susposedly was someone within the Kings orginization. So take it with a grain of salt.

I'm not surprised. I personally tune out Smart.

If you get a chance, could you retweet it?

OK, I found it, and it was part of an article on Comcast Sports Net Washington website. Rather than post the site I just copied a larger part of the article, which was speculation from the writer about whether the Wiz should try and trade for Cousins.

"Defense is harder to teach in the NBA, and that area isn't considered Cousins' strong suit, either. Why risk the chemistry? While he could be eager to start fresh and reunite with Wall, what if he were to bring some of the bad habits he learned in Sacramento?

A person with knowledge of the Kings' locker room told CSN Washington recently that the atmosphere is poisonous one, with players sending text messages and making phone calls even during film sessions under Smart.

Maybe it's all a product of losing and lame duck management as the Kings were on the verge of being relocated to Seattle.

They team stayed, ownership has changed hands and the only thing that remains to accomplish is winning again. Success has a way of cleansing everyone's image, and look no further than Zach Randolph of the Memphis Grizzlies. He was branded a problem child as early in his career but matured into a two-time All-Star and positive community influence."

Anyway, there's nothing more in the article about the source. Of course Cuz and Wall are close friends, so it could have come from anywhere, including some info that Cuz told Wall. Who knows! Not surprising though!

I also thought it was interesting how he appeared to differentiate Joe and Gavin from George when asked about how the Maloofs went about things, but maybe I was reading too much into the interview

Just to be safe on the whole posting articles without attribution thing, and in case anybody wants to actually read the whole thing...

The note about the poisonous locker is interesting but not terribly surprising or meaningful, in my opinion. Otherwise, just a beat writer for another team hoping they can somehow get Cousins, which they probably can't.

I think it maybe something like this. Wizards fans talk all the time about how they want to reunite Wall and Cousins. That might of factored into it a little.

It's sad that some people have lost their jobs, some great people probably. But right now, I don't care if Vivek fires every single employee from the past if he feels that it is beneficial and will help produce a winner. Vivek saved the Kings and I am greatly appreciative of that, right now he can do no wrong to me. Might be harsh, but I'm ready for big changes.

Best of luck to anyone who has lost their job and I hope they find a new, great opportunity soon.
