Petrie took a shot at the new Owners

HereWeBoogie

Hall of Famer
anyone here Geoff Petrie on the Grant Napear show? i caught part of it, and heard him have a snarky comment, sounds like he's not to happy about being fired, he said something about how the last time new ownership took over (Maloofs) they didnt have to fire everyone and they made the Playoffs.

And so it continues... I seriously doubt if Geoff Petrie made a snarky comment about anybody. It's not how he operates.

EDIT: If you're going to make a statement like that, at least back it up with a quote or something. Way too much innuendo and supposition here for any real dialogue IMHO.

Petrie said: “I know this, when new ownership came in (Maloofs) we didnt fire anyone and made playoffs.”

I think I heard something a long the lines of he wasn't happy that the new owners cleaned house, when Grant asked him if it was tough to see his son and other former staff let go.. but maybe I heard wrong

I heard it... that's exactly what he said. He said they have a right to bring in whomever makes them feel comfortable but that he didn't have to fire a single person when he took over. Nbd, not too many people happy with being fired.

New owners and general manager like to bring in their own people. These changes happen almost everywhere when a new owner takes over. Especially when a team has been struggling for so long like the Kings have.

That would make sense, if he was speaking as Mike Petrie's dad. Actually, that's a pretty stupid question from Grant. What did he think Petrie would say, "Nah, I don't care if any of those loyal guys were fired." it's not like it came as a surprise that Vivek would want to bring in his own guys.

One last comment from me and then I'm bowing out on this:

It was a stupid question since it was clear to anyone with half a brain that there would be a major housecleaning to get rid of the Maloof stink, as there should be. Looks like Napear is up to his old tricks. Glad I don't have to listen to his show ever again.

Although to be fair, the Maloofs didn't fire anyone because they were probably to busy trying to figure out where to move the team at that point.

I was checking out carmichael Dave's twitter yesterday and there was some serious dialogue from a lot of sac media expressing dissatisfaction at some of the layoffs. It sounds like there were a number of really well liked non-basketball people that would have been great to keep. It happens but still sad to see and could be another piece of this comment.

The clear difference, as Petrie knows, is that the Maloofs were "family" when they took over. They were already minority owners, already knew everybody, and just bought their way into majority status. The Vivek group is entirely external with no loyalty to any personnel from a previously wildly unsuccessful era.

Actually, almost all of the dialogue was over one guy - Devin Blankenship - a Sacramento boy who grew up watching the Kings and dreaming of someday working for them. He was lucky enough to live his dream for 14 years and did a damned good job working in media public relations. Anyone who ever worked with him knows how dedicated he is to the Kings and to Sacramento.

I heard entire interview and Petrie was his usual dry, humorless, holding it all pretty close the vest self but... he did exactly what the OP said: Took relatively mild shot (but none the less a shot) at new ownership in just the way it was put. I've always liked Geoff Petrie but he sounds burnt out at this point and he and Peaches come across like old soul mates from decades back - well I guess they are. Peaches handed him mostly softballs but did give former Kings President the opportunity to sound off. There was little of interest except Petrie whining (it came across exactly as such) like he still wishes he had a paycheck instead of long summer off or even longer vacation. Hopefully, Peaches will soon lose one of his two paychecks, if not depart Sacramento forever!

and there is the most important thing to remember in all of this!

I have no problem with what Petrie said. After all it is the truth.

Conversely who can blame new ownership for wanting to start fresh?

This new group is getting their first test with the news stories of Cousins (agent) wanting a max deal or to be traded.

:)KB

Actually, Petrie was talking about when he took over as GM (1994) that he didn't fire anyone. Which is also different because it doesn't involve a change of ownership.

The atmosphere around the kings at that time was of losing, but it was not toxic to the fan base. The Maloofs and everything they stand for was toxic.

To rid the Kings of the stench of the Maloofs and their loosing ways, the new ownership want to bring in their own people, which is totally understandable.

If you just paid $535 million for a team the Maloofs and their people ran into the ground, wouldn't you want your own people to turn everything around?

I'm glad Petrie got two cents in. Don't blame him a bit. Nor does it affect the great respect I have for him. I thank hin and wish him good luck. Let's move on, we have outs of hiring to do and a draft next week.

Of course, but there is a big staff working on the team and you don't just toss out every person who happened to work for crappy owners. Not saying Vivek is doing that but there is a difference in eliminating certain positions and totally cleaning house.

It's been reported over the years Maloof Sports & Entertainment employed over 1,200 full and part-time employees in Sacramento as part of running Kings and arena facility (making them one of the largest private employers in Sacramento). By far most ex-MSE workers it appears will not be losing their jobs and instead retained - office personnel, security staff, concessionaires, ticket agents, etc, etc. The only ones on the outs are top management and handful of mid level staff it would seem. So refrain of "totally" cleaning house is simply incorrect. Probably those rehired under Vivek & Company will need to go to some sort of re-education camp however to rid them of any Maloofism loyalty:)

Yeah, the Maloofs did more house-cleaning the last few years than the new ownership will. After all, they were down to about 800 employees from that peak of 1,200. The only problem I see for current employees at lower levels is when the new arena opens. The people working in the parking lot at the arena now, know there will be be extremely few parking jobs at the new arena.

I listened to the entire interview, and in my opinion, what you just said is pure BS. Petrie never came across at any time as whining or wishing he still had a paycheck coming. He even said that this was the first time in 30 years he had a summer off to do what he wanted to do. First off, I know Petrie to some degree, and I predicted that he actually was ready to retire. I don't think he has any interest in moving to another city. At least not at the present moment. Also, Grant never specificaly asked Petrie about his son, but asked a more general question about the changes that have been made, and that question came out of Petrie talking about what he might miss after 20 years on the job. His reply was that most of all he'd miss the people he worked with! The people he associated with on a daily basis.

I don't think questions were softball at all. He asked about the lack of financial support from the Maloof's, and gave Petrie the opportunity to say whatever he wanted to say. He asked Petrie about Cousins, and if he would do anything differently if he had the chance. But at no time did Petrie come across as whining or regretful about leaving. In another interview, Petrie said that he had told the Maloof's that he thought it was time for a change in the front office. I have no agenda here! I listened to the entire interview, and at no time did I think Petrie took a shot at new ownership because of changes in the front office. I guess we hear what we want to hear.

Someone should let Geoff know that when you've failed to make the playoffs 7 yrs in a row with horrendous records, the most logical thing to come to the new owner's mind is not "lets keep all the guys who were apart of a massive losing effort and try again! That really seems like a good idea."

Naps was very sad that a lot of people he had established relationships over the years were fired. They were just sharing in the sadness. I don't think it's a big deal. It's just human.

A buddy of mine who worked for MSE (and now Vivek) had already been notified about this. He's seasonal right now but he was advised when the new arena opens that he would be offered a different position within the company/arena. The jobs will be going away but the employees wont. At least that's how he put it when I asked him about it a few weeks ago when talking about the new arena. He works the lot btw.

I respect Petrie and what he's done for the team, but you also have to understand that when a group of individuals pony up $535 million, they have every right to make changes. I'm not even talking about legal rights, but simply make changes because this is YOUR team now.

Had Petrie not screwed up the past couple of seasons, then maybe he would have been given a chance. But, in the end, a change of philosophy to correspond with Vivek's vision is what ended up happening.
