Paul Westphal on the rise guys a couple of weeks ago:

I think he is going to have a good time coaching this team. I don't see any weaknesses other than depth at the C and PF position.

The real question is, if the team is a couple wins above .500 to get things going, will they use that momentum to continue the winning, or will they collapse? If they do get off to a 6-2 start, will Kenny Thomas be a part of it? Because K9 is probably the best option for PF off the bench if he is hunrgy for production. We all know that K9 has the ability to be 11 and 9 when he starts. His back to the basket play and his desire to be in rebounding position will help free evans for the long rebounds and put backs. If hawes and Thompson aren't boxing out, mainly hawes, if he isn't boxing out, i suspect Thomas and May will be givin the chance to put up some numbers.

I think Donte Green is in trouble. For a 6-10 athlete, he has somehow found himself in the tweener catagory. Not a PF and not a SF. that is frusterating. I wouldn't consider him effective enough from outside to be a shooting PF and i don't like his ballhandling and passing enough to put him as a slashing PF(chris webber '00). I think he needs to bulk up and actually find a nba player in history to mold his game after. He is pulling a Raef LaFrentz right now, and that is unacceptable for Donte. Donte is the key, if Donte boxes out on every possession offense and defense, he would be one heck of a player. the problem is, he is too focused on the X's and O's and he is 1-2 seconds behind, and by the time he realizes what to do it is way too late. Donte could grab 10RPG if all he did was focus on boxing out and playing position D. But, alas, everyone wants to shoot and score and be the next MJ. Donte is the key, imo.

Donte admitted he should have stayed in college longer, but he can't go back and change his decision. I do think this is an importatn year for him. I'm hoping a new and experienced coach can help him. Everybody seemed confused last year a lot of the time. That couldn't have helped the progress of any of our young guys.

Donte is like a deer in headlights sometimes. Sometimes, like when he has the ball in his hands, he is a decent player.

On the other hand. His transition D is slow to react. For example, last year when he saw minutes, i would look at the shot clock winding down to 4sec...3sec. and there was Donte(playing touch my monkey with his defender) still thinking about if he was going to be playing defense or wondering if Thompson was going to pull down another offensive board. Donte needs to look at that clock or keep a mental count in his head, and when the clock hits 2, he needs to sprint back on D or if he finds his brain he could try to box out a bigger player than he, allowing the even bigger players(Jason and Spencer) to easily windex for the entire game. Last year, he would react so late that as soon as he decided to slash to the hoop for an offensive rebound, his slash would be interrupted by the need to play defense, and HE WOULD BE BEHIND HIS MAN.

I still think Donte holds the key to the season, he just needs to wise up and use his senses. I hate that i am so critical of him, but he is the one player who has the least basketball IQ on the whole team. and if he learned anything over the summer, if could mean a few more wins.

I would love to defend Donte, but its hard to. The best I can do is say that he's young, and he wasn't the only one that was inconsistant on the team. There were several players last year that said they wern't sure what their role's were. Brad Miller being one of them. So if an experienced player like Miller was confused at times, one can only imagine what was going through Donte's mind.

My hope is that everyone will be on the same page this year. That Westphal well bring a consistant message, and players like Donte will benefit from it. We shall see. :)
