Our core?

Chupacabra

Starter
Which players make up the most minimal portion of our core? In other words, which players are most integral to the Kings future success and why? I think it consists of Evans/Cousins/Whiteside. If you can start those three players it gives you amazing flexibility as to who you can fill out the rest of the starting lineup with. Those 3 players are extremely dynamic on offense and defense. If we can keep those 3 players together for a long time I really believe the Kings should win a championship. Cousins and Evans are the front court and backcourt duo while Whiteside is the defensive mistake eraser. If im Geoff Petrie im doing everything i possibly can to keep these 3 together for as long as possible. Anyone elses thoughts?

I kind of agree with you. But I would include Dalembert, Greene, and Thompson if we're talking about the next 5 years.

Dalembert would be nice to retain for the next 5 years ( especially if he comes cheap for his next contract ) while we wait for Whiteside to develop fully. He is only 29 years old and knowing he is not prone to injury, 5 years wouldn't be a stretch as our primary defensive anchor while we wait for Cousins and Whiteside to assume the role.

Greene at 6' 11" have too much potential at the 3, or even at 4 and at the 2. You want to retain this guy for all his potential.

Thompson is a hardworker who will give you maximum effort everytime he is playing. He could be the best full-sized back-up PF for the Kings. He can also play fairly well the back-up role at the 5.

I don't see Dalembert staying beyond this year, unless he resigns for a very low salary.

Core? Most likely consisting of Tyreke, Cousins, Greene, and Whiteside.

Casspi and Thompson have become great players to have off the bench, but not actually good or talented enough to be legitimate starters.

Seen some good things from Whiteside in SL but he does have a lot of work to do... needs to work on his post moves ALOT seems only to have the one at the moment.

When you compare him to Cousins who seems to be able to get underneath at will.

The difference between a Top 5 pick and a second round pick.

Our core I truly believe is Evans/Cousins/Greene as clearly the league is turning back into who has the best team, it's not duos anymore. The sick thing about those 3 is they are all pretty much the same age and have barely touched the best parts of their game. I'm telling you Donte needs to be looked at more closely in the grand scheme of things, he's a 6'11(He actually looks taller than DMC) floor spacer who can guard 3 positions out there I don't think there's a guy like that in the league right now. Is there actually a guy like that right now? Besides Kevin Durant nobody else comes to mind.

Just my 2 cents here, but this Whiteside enthusiasm needs be held in check. It gets a bit out of control. He is a 2nd round draft pick that may never see a 2nd contract in this league. These second rounders are always a bit of a long shot. If they were not log shots, they would have been drafted in the first round.

Don't get me wrong, I have hopes that he will work out as well. But he really needs to prove himself before we start suggesting he is a started, or even a guy to get major minutes and certainly before he is mentioned is the same sentence as "core." Heck, I think he needs to prove himself above and beyond Brockman to begin.

This is rediculous. We drafted whiteside for his defensive potential. Any offense coming from him is a plus. Whiteside is doing what we drafted him for, to block shots and rebound. With that being said, he is thriving during summer league and to say he need to prove himself over brockman is stupid because he's doing everything better than brockman.

Except he's not in the NBA yet. Summer League doesn't really count. I think he'll clearly be more of an impact player than Brockman, but he's still just a rookie who hasn't proven anything yet. It is a bit premature to say that he's a part of the core already.

Wasn't intending that he was apart of the core. I found it rediculous that he need to work on his "post moves" and "prove himself over brockman".

If I'm being very conservative, Tyreke is our core right now. That's it. Summer league is summer league.

I'll reframe the question a little bit. What players do you absolutely not want to be traded over the next three years so that you can see whether they are core players or not? To that question, I'd say: Cousins, Greene, Casspi, Whiteside, and Thompson. Everybody else is I'd be more prone to trade, for the right price.

You've hit it on the nose. It's fun to talk about but these guys haven't yet played a minute in the NBA. I know this talk will come up evety week until the end of the season but until then it is premature. I hope for things like them keeping healthy until the first game and then for the rest of the season. I don't want to know how it turns out - I want to enjoy each game, win and lose. Core for when? 11/19/10? If you're talking after that I don't care right now. Play ball.
