Omer Asik available?

Our favorite trade partner in recent years seems to be open to trading Asik. They likely wouldn't need MT, and would be after younger talent/expirings. Maybe something centered around one of: PPat/Hayes/JT would get their attention?

Emboldened by their pursuit of free agent Dwight Howard, the Rockets have called several teams and made Omer Asik and Jeremy Lin available in potential trades, league sources told CBSSports.com.

They want to clear cap space not take stuff back.

Actually once they moved TRob, and they just did tonight, they have the money for Dwight now. So these moves would potentially be more about balancing the roster around Dwight if he indeed comes.

thing is, we have this stretch 4 that would fit nicely next to Dwight...somebody Houston is familiar with...

Yup yup yup. McHale didn't want to lose Patterson last year.

Jimmer + Patterson works on the trade machine. Two great shooters to surround Howard with. I'd even throw in IT, but they have Lin, Beverly, and just drafted Canaan.

Asik should absolutely be a target, though.

The thing with asik is that he has an uber-back loaded contract. 5 this past year, 5.2 this upcoming season and holy sweet jesus 14.5 mil in 14-15...so better plan accordingly when trading for him.

They want to package Asik with Lin. I don't think we're buyers in that scenario. Word is circulating that if Dwight ends up in Houston, ATL would be willing to deal Smith in a S&T for Asik. We can't compete with that.

Nope. And that would really be an ideal scenario for both teams.

Which is of course exactly why it won't happen. :p

If they get Dwight then they'll want to pair him with a stretch 4. Obviously the Kings don't have that, but Thornton's shooting may still interest them. Heck, Jimmer might even be interesting in the JJ Reddick role.

pretty sure you're looking at Harden there. Asik has 3 years at precisely $8,374,646 a pop, no incline or decline in salary.

Had Asik on my fantasy teams last year so I got too watch alot of him. Definitely one of the best rebounders in the league.. And he really clogs the paint. Hes an amazing post defender. His FG % and freethrow shooting got wayyyyyyy better last season.

I wouldnt mind him at all on the Kings. but I worry about who will guard the smaller quicker forwards we would face.

Asik's contract is backloaded like Lin's. It's why Chicago had to pass and why Houston is even considering trading him at this time.

No, it would've been back-loaded for Bulls, had they matched. For Rockets and any team trading for him it's flat $8 and 1/3 million.
I could repeat my usual mantra of Asik/Cousins pairing being potentially exposed by teams with good PFs, but Asik might be very impactful to overshadow potential hurdles, especially if you get him for Patterson and Jimmer.

do you have any source for that? my numbers are from shamsports, which is by far the best source for these things, for what it's worth.

It was a Poison Pill contract. I'm honestly not sure how it works in a trade after the fact. What Gilles said may be correct.

edit: Did some quick reading (if I'm reading it all correctly) and as Gilles said, salary cap hit would be averaged out- 8mil per year. Payment structure would still be 5-15 for the next two seasons.

People always say that, and I think its ironic that Don Nelson never won anything in the NBA but he appears to sneakily have poisoned the well anyway. My response is always "let them worry about how they're going to guard my big guys".

I also distinctly remember the slow-footed giant that is Roy Hibbert absolutely shut down Chris Bosh in the ECF. nevermind that there's not that many PFs out there that would warrant worrying about them.

Good point.

As for trades, I dont think they would want MT because of Harden. I'm wondering if we could pry Asik for JT/Jimmer/Future Pick? Works in the trade checker. They're obviously looking for a more versatile PF/C too put beside Dwight. JT would fit that role nicely I think.

If they did want Thornton, he works straight up for Asik.

Id be more then happy going forward with Cuz/Asik/Patterson. a good blend of skill there.

I would take back Lin if that meant Asik, by the way.

Thornton + Jimmer + IT + Patterson for Lin and Asik. Could also sub Hayes instead of Thornton, who the Rockets may prefer.

I don't want Lin, but Asik is exactly what this team needs.

We can't take Lin. In 2014/15 Asik and Lin will get $14,898,938... Add Tyreke, if we keep him (around 12M), Cousins (14/15M), itt's just too much and I don't think Vivek wants to go so much over the cap.

We'd have to find some way to get rid of Lin.

Maybe not. Not if we are dumping 3 guards of our own.

Evans/Lin/McCallum
McLemore/Lin/Salmons

People were talking about going after Calderon, Vasquez, or Udrih (who I love) Lin has some size, good IQ, Passing, and could play with either Evans (sliding to the 2) or McLemore. He'd be decent in our 6th man / Jarret Jack role playing 30mpg off the bench. Very pricey for that role, but hey - you gotta give to get. Move him if you can, but if you can't its not the end of the world so long as you are shipping out other guards.

Sorry guys, I don't see anything the Kings are willing to trade that'd entice the Rockets.

PPat? The Rockets just got rid of him last season. They don't want him, and besides, they already have plenty of stretch 4s and can always slide Parson there.

Hayes? They liked him so much they decided not to retain him a few seasons ago.

Jimmer? Maybe, but we're not going to get Asik with Jimmer as the centerpiece.

JT? May as well keep Asik.

Thornton? As an Sixth Man? Somehow don't see the Rockets going this route.

IT? Ok, he is decent but not going to be enough to fetch Asik.

Salmons? Ha!

This is pure speculation but Morey is an ambitious dreamer - he goes for the top guys - Gasol (but failed), Harden, Dwight, etc. He's probably thinking along the line of an Al Jefferson, Millsap, Pekovic, etc as the partner for Howard; and maybe dangling Asik in a sign n trade. Hell, he may have just added LMA to his wanted list. He does not sound like a guy who'd settle for our semi-decent ho-hum. What'd Dwight's reaction be if he signed with the Rockets and find out his front-court tandem is... Patrick Patterson!

I wouldn't try too hard to get Asik. His stone hands were on full display in the playoffs.
