Oh My God - Gavin Maloof on Tyreke Evans

Excited?
Snake oil salesman?
Rachel Phelps in an Armani?

Who knows! All I know is the management has been feeding the fans a lot of BS and the fans have been showing their disapproval at the ticket stand.

Evans is probably the best at creating his own shot in the draft.. The problem is I wanted someone to create shots for Martin, Hawes, and Thompson.

Ok, so a 3 guard rotation. So where does that leave Sergio? Not much time for Garcia at the 2 as well and we now have 4 SF in Garcia, Noc, Greene, Casspi. How do you divide up those minutes?

Oh, guess this means McCants is out too. Come to think of it, Evans sounds like another McCants.

Dang, I forgot about McCants.

Ditto.. I am just one person but I haven't purchased anything to do with the Kings after they traded Webber. Since then it's been just a few patches on a real leaky pipe. Maloofs will not get me to start spending my money just by parading on a stage yelling out they have the "Fastest of the court sprint" guy.

No they will get you to spend your money by getting the best player they could and they did. Tyreke will surprise you if all you think you are getting is a patch. Plus, S.Rod is another nice addition.

Again, your opinion.. Like my opinion is that we didn't get bpa. I like Sergio, but it's not really a move that will get me to buy season tickets again.

That's not true. Evans is bigger and a better ball handler+passer than Mccants ever was. He's got better defensive potential because he's taller and has much longer arms. You're acting like he's a stupid 3 point chucker that's insanely streaky. If you ever watched Ty you'd KNOW that's not close to being true. But that's not close to being his game. He's good at driving past people and commanding double teams and dishing off to whoever the open player winds up being. He's great at finishing at the rim. Sorry but you have his game ALL WRONG.

I'm not sure how to say this, other than I've made an a$$ out of my self more than once in my life. Mostly when I was younger, and frankly, I was an a$$. I have survived many things in my life. Vietnam, a knife confrontation in a shower. A couple of divorces. But nothing scared me as much as having to get up in front of a lot of people and give a speech. I got roped into toastmasters. It turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to me. But I was certainly terrified the first time I gave a speech.

Was Gavin over the top tonight? Yeah, he was probably trying too hard. He was frustrated. When you've been on the winning end most of your life, loosing is unfamiliar territory. Criticism is not something your used to. At least not on the public level. Rule number one: Never walk out onto a stage unprepared, and then let your emotions do your talking for you. It might work well for Henry the fifth, but it ususaly dosen't work for the average guy.

Personally, I take no joy in making fun of someone in that situation. Maybe because I've been there. And I believe that the majority of you were simply uncomfortable watching it. But I sensed a little joy in a couple of the posts. So if the shoe fits, shame on you...

Yeah, like people here know more about this guy than an NBA owner with a full staff of scouts and an experienced GM.

Let me explain argumentum ad verecundiam to you. It goes like this:

The inveterate and expert professionals who spend endless hours studying and working with basketball players are in a much better position to evaluate talent than anyone else is, and their opinions are the only ones that deserve much weight. Therefore, when Pau Gasol and Kevin Garnett get traded away for bags of chips by organizations who know every tiny nuance of their game, it just means that those guys actually suck, and angry Minnesota and Memphis fans are just being idiots. One day they will come to realize how bad those players really are.

And, likewise, if franchises start going bankrupt in the next couple of years, it isn't because they're in any way mismanaged, it's because some inexplicable viral stupidity has plagued their fan base.

The NBA is an entertainment business. If a lot of people find a franchise to be worth a big chunk of their entertainment budgets, and the owners don't overspend too much, then it's a viable business and a success. If the fans lose interest, then they get to veto the decisions of the management, and send the team packing to the bankruptcy courts or to a different city. The public are far more powerful than the owners. If the public will flock to Arco to see VF21's one legged monkey, Bozo, playing for the Kings, then the FO is succeeding by acquiring him. If they put together a great all star team and not very many people like it, then management has completely failed, because their job is to please us.

Do you remember how some fans left after we traded Peja for Ron, for example? In a one-on-one game, Ron would have absolutely crushed Peja, no doubt about it. And I'm sure that he improved the team's W-L record for a while. Yet, whether it was because they found Ron's personality objectionable, or because of the way it greatly changed the style of the team, I think enough fans left that it was a mixed bag as far as the viability of the franchise goes. I don't know how long the sellout streak would have lasted if we'd done something different, but I know that it ended while we were playing Ron.

I think that this might be a little similar. Not in that Evans will turn out to be as nutty as Ron, only Dennis Rodman can do that. But it may not be the step needed to get the fan base going again.

I guess we'll see.

Those are not examples that I would not use. Those trades that you made examples of are ones that were made for economic purposes especailly in the case of Memphis and the Miny trade was not too bad since they got a young big in Al. Both we made to save money. Drafting Evans over Rubio had nothing to do with money.

At the risk of 1) hijacking the thread, and 2) re-opening a long-since closed can of worms, I will re-state the opinion I expressed a few years ago, namely that KingsFans is better off without the sort of people who would/have left over the Stojakovic trade, just as we are better off without the sort of people who would/have left over the Webber trade.

I didn't feel joy, I felt embarrassed for him.

Trust me, I public speak for a living. I know what it's like to get up and make a fool of yourself. I've done it plenty of times and will do it again I'm sure. However, Gavin should have been better prepared tonight. He is one of the leaders and the faces of this franchise. In fact, he OWNS the franchise. Please, Mr. Maloof - I expect better. Don't try too hard next time. I will not makes excuses for him.

I'm not really questioning that. Alexa confirms that we have lost a lot of posters even in the last year, and many of the worse ones may have left. But that also means that not very many people are appreciating the improved standards that we maintain here. And if our quality becomes TOO much higher, then the Maloofs might be forced to sell or move the franchise, or it might simply go belly up. And that would probably be bad for the site.

Believe it or not, Gavin is just that enthusiastic a lot of the time. I was even at a game a couple of years back when he wore a Kenny Thomas jersey (it was right after one of KT's few good performances).

Gavin may be over the top to a lot of folks, but at least he cares. I equate him at times to Mateen Cleaves.

:)

Okay, but he sounds like he's begging for people to like him. Making guarantees of a franchise changing player sounds more like desperation to sell tickets rather than honesty.

I agree! I think, that while Gavin was over the top, that he was just doing what he is supposed to do...hype the Kings and sell tickets! Of course he wants his team to win, but they still needs money in his wallet. So even if he thinks his team is going to be the worst again, he needs to be upbeat and screaming about how much he loves his Kings!!!!

...even if most of the people in the audience know he's full of it ;)

LMAO, you had to be in the arena to believe it. i was just stunned sitting there watching him say all that stuff. i didn't know whether to cheer or not. it was just bad timing he came out right after the pick and said all that stuff bc most of the fans were hoping it was rubio instead of evans. i think if he came out after the 23rd pick when people warmed up to the fact that evans was picked he would have gotten a more favorable response from the crowd.

This to me was plainly in defense of the pick due to some fans critical reaction from passing on Rubio (this vid was no doubt missing some context).

Gavin is passionate and wants to win (more so than most owners in the league)... give him a break.... he was fired up and felt like some were quick to judge and missing the positives of the pick.

So what.

Was wondering why he sounded so angry.

This was a little unordinary (and uncomfortable to watch) but I understand Gavin’s frustration. They’ve been getting huge beatings since the Rick situation (and that was well deserved) but I think it’s time for the fans to realize that these guys are here and they really want to see this team win. There’s been so much negativity that I think his excitement changed because of the potential/initial reaction that the fans had.

Lets give this draft pick a chance, Gavin did put a lot of pressure on him but I can’t wait to see how he fits in with the team, and who knows maybe Geoff will pull off a miracle and get Rubio alongside Evans.

or the initial fan reactions would make them realize they made the wrong pick (fan wise) and be forced to have a deal swinging us rubio....

did you guys chant rubio or something?

theres still a possibility of swinging a deal.. im not closing the book on this...

seriously what were the fans reactions when tyreke evans was drafted did a lot of fans boo? or got upset?

LOL petrie and the kings dont give a crap about fan reaction. This board looks the same after EVERY DAMN DRAFT and im tired of it. You guys all eat your words by the time December rolls around anyway...

Big deal. What do you guys expect him to say?

Personally, I think Petrie and the Maloofs have done a pretty good job over the years keeping us relevant. There is no reason for me not to trust Petrie when it comes to the draft (minus Douby). I guess you could say they aren't the best at free agent signings lately but... Pretty good overall I think. JMO

It wasn't so much "WHAT HE SAID", as I agree with him, but rather, "HOW HE SAID IT", it was WAY over the top!

Uhhhh, I think thats what I said. Perhaps a little differently. Or, are you just agreeing with me?
