Official 2009 Draft Pick order

In 25 years the worst team has gotten the first pick 4 times...in 25 years it never occurred that this system doesn't help the worst teams like it should, NBA you are the worst.

It's a lottery dude. What did you expect? If they wanted to help the very worst teams, they'd just eliminate the lottery.

It's bad news for us that we got the fourth pick, but we didn't get cheated. The same thing happens every year. It was always just wishful thinking to expect a top 2 pick anyway. But it could work out well for us that Washington got the fifth pick. That's the lowest pick they possibly could have gotten which means that pick is likely available for the right price. I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but I think in this draft picking #4 and #5 would be better than having just the #1 pick or the #2 pick. I think Griffin and Rubio will be great players, but I don't think they're as far ahead of the field as most seem to. If Thabeet and Jennings are both available at 4 and 5, I'd consider that best-case scenario for us. We'd get a PG and a dominant defensive player.

Unlike conspiracy theorists, I don't think we got purposely cheated at all. The Clippers are the last team Stern would want to see get the first pick. Not only are they one of the worst run franchises in sports they clearly tanked at the end of the season which is exactly what this lousy lotto system is meant to eliminate.

We didn't tank; we just sucked and needed a first or second pick to breathe new life into our franchise. So in essence the lotto system rewarded the team that did exactly what the NBA wants to discourage and punched in the gut the team that needs the pick.

No consipracy, the lotto system simply needs to be abandoned. It has proven to be a failure.

Great post, I completely agree with you 100%.

Jennings and Derozan anyone?

that is, IF we buy Washington's pick. I still think Rubio will slip to us somehow though. I'll be happy with the #4 and #5 though and those turn into Jennings and Derozan.

No, that was actually precisely why they set the system up -- so the very worst team did NOT get the top pick every year. Bakc when they did, teams were REALLY tanking. Unapologetically. And they were 100% right to do so. When Houston tanked to get Hakeem, they gave themselves 15 years of greatness. They put in the lotto to discourage teams from going after the #1 like that. So in many ways its probably worked out kind of perfect on that front. Not so perfect if you are the worst team of course, and legitimately so.

Great post. You are a bravery man then me defending the lotto right now.

If that actually does come to pass, I wouold agree -- that would be a great haul. But I have doubts that Thabeet is going to get past OKC.

though you could see this coming a mile away, it still depresses me.

this summer, the only thing that will keep me going is a four word mantra: dwyane wade went fourth, dwyane wade went fourth, dwyane wade went fourth...

Petrie usually goes for unselfish guys with skills and shooting ability. Keep that in mind.

I'd envision trades or James Harden. Frankly, I'd go with a trade at this point...and exclude NO ONE (well, maybe except Thompson).

Take this for what it's worth, but Jerry Reynolds was not high at all on Jennings...nor with Tyreke Evans (turnovers, outside jumper).

I think we need to trade the 4 for 2 picks in the 5-18 range... Considering how good Petrie is as finding players why not double our chances and possibly get 2 good players?

Yeah, I'm squinting real hard and imagining they fall in love with Evans or Harden playing alongside Westbrook, but I tend to agree with you on that one. Then again, I was 100% sure Charlotte would take Brook Lopez and they took Augustin instead, so you never know. Maybe the Clippers even trade with OKC and take Jennings third.

Well, the bright side is KF just set a new record for most users ever online... I dont see that changing on draft night

I'd take that as a compliment! Well, I would if I were either of those guys. Personally I just hope I'm right that Jerry Reynolds (despite what he may think) has absolutely no say in who the Kings will draft.

how is jennings not going to be available? aren't the top three griffin, rubio, and thabeet?

?

I said that Thabeet would likely be sucked up by OKC, nothing about Jennings. Jennings in fact has long been my fallback at #4 -- on potential at least. But the other poster's proposal was that we trade for Washington's #5 pick as well, and then snag Jennings and Thabeet. Sounds good ot me, and if Thabeet slips we can pull it off. But OKC might very well take Thabeet and make it impossible.

yah, i was reading the quote you had quoted, sorry. a few other comments on here (along with what you just said) puts jennings at 4, but he's slated to go much later than that, no?

Philosophy...

It's time for a little philosophy lesson ladies and gents:

"A very old Chinese Taoist story describes a farmer in a poor country village. He was considered very well-to-do, because he owned a horse which he used for plowing and for transportation. One day his horse ran away. All his neighbors exclaimed how terrible this was, but the farmer simply said 'Maybe'.

A few days later the horse returned and brought two wild horses with it. The neighbors all rejoiced at his good fortune, but the farmers just said 'Maybe'.

The next day the farmer's son tried to ride one of the wild horses; the horse threw him and broke his leg. The neighbors all offered their sympathy for his misfortune, but the farmer again said 'Maybe'.

The next week conscription officers came to the village to take young men for the army. They rejected the farmer's son because of his broken leg. When the neighbors told him how lucky he was, the farmer replied 'Maybe'......" - Reframing, by Bandler.

The bottom line is, that we know nothing. We think we know, and so we're dissapointed over our "knowledge" of our misfortune. The #4 pick in the draft could be the greatest thing that ever happened to this franchise. Maybe.

He is now. I'm speculating that after workouts, he'll be moving up to the 3 or 4 range. I think there's also a chance Thabeet moves down after workouts since his biggest assets (shotblocking and size) are already pretty obvious whereas other guys like Harden or Evans or Hill could really impress somebody when they see them up close. A lot is going to happen between now and the draft to shake up the draft order. We won't really know until the week of the draft where people are expected to be taken, and even then there'll be some surprises (like Jason Thompson last year).

What we do know is what happened in the past and what I see is that the Kings have had POS luck too many times and this looks to be no different.
