NYT: "they scream at us..."

Don't know if this has been posted yet. Sam Amick mentioned part of it in his Miller piece a few days ago, but there's some other things of note in there. I'm going to just copy and paste the Kings part of it, and highlight the best parts.

In those days, Sacramento’s bandbox Arco Arena was clanging with cow bells. From 2001 to 2004, the Kings never lost more than eight games at home. They are 16-12 at home this season. Though they have made the playoffs eight consecutive seasons, they are 23-31 this season and three games out of eighth place and a berth in the playoffs.

“I know it’s tough to see for our fans,” Bibby said. “They are still the same fans, but a lot of them scream at us now, instead of scream for us.”

While the Nets’ new arena has not yet been built, the Kings are in a more precarious position, still hoping for public approval and civic support for a new home.

The team’s losing has not engendered much support, the Kings co-owner Joe Maloof said Thursday in a phone interview. “The real character test of our franchise is, how are we going to turn this around?” Maloof said. “That’s up to the whole organization.”

The Kings are 0-5 in overtime games and have lost 11 by 5 points or fewer.

Maloof pointed to the new coach, Eric Musselman, who had two losing seasons as head coach at Golden State in 2003 and 2004. “He needs to address those close losses,” Maloof said, adding: “I think he’s a little inexperienced, to be honest. Nobody is going to work harder than Eric Musselman.”

Musselman, 42, got off to a rocky start when he was arrested for drunken driving before the season. His relentless style and reliance on statistical analysis rather than a player’s experience has not always made him a sympathetic figure to players. Ron Artest said that Musselman sometimes lacked a feel for substitutions and game rhythms.

“At the beginning of the season, I was disappointed how we were playing, how we were being used,” Artest said Friday. “But as the season has gone on, Muss has gotten better at learning how to deal with players.”

In Friday’s loss, Musselman yanked his starters early when their jump shots did not fall, a move that mystified Bibby.

When asked to describe Musselman’s style, Shareef Abdur-Rahim looked over to Bibby for an assist, but Bibby said, “You got to answer that for yourself, dude.”

Abdur-Rahim answered, “Intense.”

Musselman said: “My first year in Orlando, I worked for a Hall of Fame coach in Chuck Daly, and he said it takes 50 games to know your team. Each game takes on more importance as the season goes on. We have to play at a different pace on the road. It’s got to start soon.”

As happy as I am that the Maloofs and the players are voicing their displeasure with Musselman, it's very disheartening that the fans are acting in the way Bibby says they are.

A little off topic, but did anybody hear that fan last night at the end of the game? "Hey Musselman, thanks for participating in the NBA!" Kinda funny, even Philly knows he sucks.

The Maloofs litle waver there is the key factor -- obviously there is no point in anybody being fired this season. But the only thing that will keep Muss in town for next season is the Maloofs stepping in and saying "this is still our guy". When they throw in a little distancer comment like that...it almost sounds like the beginning of the end. A critique, and then a pat "compliment", almost like what you say about a guy after you fire him but want to make it sound nice.

I would love to see an NBA Commercial

"The Sacramento Kings have recently taken part in a special program. Brad Miller recently participated in a shopping spree for 20 impovrished children. The Maloofs have also gotten into the spirit, hiring a somewhat mentally challenged basketball incompetent coach with a taste for the hard stuff."

:Musselman:"It's jsut a dream come true"

"The Sacramento Kings, just another case to show that the NBA Cares"

ROFL best post ever.

Even if Muss gets shown the door who would the Maloofs bring in next?! The biggest mistake of the off-season was letting Adelman go. You have a proven coach who has been to the NBA finals and you let him go for an unproven guy who happens to do a good power point presentation

If Maloofs show Muss the door, I can see them making another blunder and appointing Don Nelson as the next coach of the Sacramento Kings. Wouldn't that be great

Well, as long as Don Nelson is under contract with Golden State, we have no worries there. Just hope that Nelson does not get fired too. :p

I say dump Musselman now and see how the players respond to Scott Brooks. He did a good job filling in while Musselman was out. See how he does the rest of the season, then management can decide if they want to keep him or look around for another coach.

The best thing that can happen now is ... nothing. Let him stay through the end of the season. It's not like bringing in anyone else could turn things around and make us better. We're not good. Period. We need to just stumble through until April 18 and then think about what to do from there on ...

If you're gonna junk the car anyway why put new tires on to take it to the junkyard?

I don't think that Nellie would be all that bad, he's got loads of experience and has actually had winning seasons before. But there are also a number of college coaches who might be worth considering, if they could be talked into it. The NBA is different, and would take some adjusting to, but at least they would know how to handle personnel utilization, timeouts, rotation, inspiring players, and all those mundane little things that coaches use to win basketball games.

If they don't want a veteran like Nellie, but would prefer to develop a younger coach, they might as well get someone who has shown that they can master those basics. It often makes sense to pick someone based on completely unproven potential, but when you find yourself with a Kwame Brown, you need to cut your losses and move on.

nellie's system would fail here just about as much as musselman's "system" has failed. the kings don't have the quickness to thrive in a nellie fastbreak. they've got the lack of size to cater to his small ball tendencies, but they lack the athleticism. it's no good being an undersized team if your tweeners are as slow as your resident (and only) 7-footer. so, that said, i would be very opposed to bringing nellie in with the team we have. i would not be so opposed to bringing nellie in to coach a young, quick, athletic team, though, because nellie is very good at teaching offense to young players who fit in his system. that's not to say that i think nellie's a winner, necessarily. but his track record sure looks prettier than musselman's. so, if the kings got young and quick in a hurry, and nellie got fired from golden state, i'd say bring him on if there's no brighter future in sight...

No point in firing Muss now. And I say, no point in firing him unless you've got a solid replacement, that you are likely to be able to get.

Like the replacement we got for adelman
While I will admit its possible to go from the frying pan into the fire, I would hope the Maloofs would have learned something from this. Like, if a guy shows up with a giant binder and a powerpoint presentation...interview over.;)

I really don't think that is funny at all, in fact it is very childish. Yeah, he is not the best coach ever, but you know he is trying. He may not be back next year, but he is human and has feelings.

Also think Musselman will stay through the year, sad to say.

Can't believe all of this talk about the "screaming fans." We have been to every game and believe me when there are about 17,000 fans there, the screaming is not loud and not made by many. Pretty much the same for the boo birds. We are just not used to either and neither are the players. Annie.
