I would venture to guess the drama will primarily go away after he is on the "right" team. It doesn't seem like a huge distraction to Houston (although there was issues with Yao playing on the National team early in his career and being worn out by the end of the NBA season, but that's an issue for many Euros as well.) Regardless, it's a different type of drama.
All rookies are unproven, but I understand Yi is a little different because of his background. I'd say if you can get a top pick somehow for Artest, either a recently drafted player, or a pick next year, you'd be crazy not to take it.

You're kidding right? I'm sure that the Chinese government hasn't picked up the phone and called the Tigers front office or anything like that. Those kinds of things would never happen.
The Chinese government has not been known to interfere with a sporting team's matter. The attitude in China is actually quite lassie-faire (when it comes to business and business only). Chinese soccer players are routinely transferred to play overseas, sometimes to smaller market teams, and never had any interference from the bosses in Beijing.
I think the Rocket's negotiation during the 2002 draft made a false impression on some people. From my understanding, there were never any tough stance taken by the government to prevent Yao from going to Houston. The only thing the Rockets worried was that the CBA needed to submit some paperwork to the FIBA to clear Yao to enter the NBA. And the pre-draft negotiation was primarily to make sure the CBA would submit said paperwork and to do the due-diligence on Yao's requirement to pay 50% of his salary back to his Chinese team and the government. It was an unusual agreement that the Rockets needed to make sure wouldn't intrude on their own contract with Yao. And it was a relatively smooth transition from what was reported.

Ron's got 8 yrs of drama under his belt all attached to Ron personally -- you can't separate them from him, or who he is from the problem. Meanwhile so far as is known Yi has no personal problems beyond being puppeted about by Big Brother trying to control which city he lands in. Once that is resolved I would expect a relatively smooth situation. Obviously if it turns out other, then you wouldn't want Yi's drama either.

In fact, I wouldn't feel all that bad about trading Artest straight across for him, since he's not old or injury-prone, and has no unwanted baggage to speak of. His contract isn't great, but it's also not terrible. For that reason, I tend to think the Bucks wouldn't go for it. There's really no motivation to unload him.

Unfortunatley both Simmons and Gadzuric, the Bucks two problem contracts, both violate our own attempts...or at least what pre Mikki were supposed to be our attempts to clear space for 08-09. That would be the downside -- moving a soon to be done contract for another anvil.

That's correct. And btw, the Bayi Rockets team is owned by the Chinese government. Wang Zhizhi, who plays for Bayi, is also a lieutenant colonel. In fact, everyone who plays for Bayi is in the army.

Sounds like one of those interlocking directorates the Triads, err......the People's Republic of China is known for.
The Bucks better shape up or their GM could have a visitation of several Bruce Lee types in their office, informing him of the "the way it's going to be...."We've got to get this guy. If he becomes a star, he could be the impetus for teaching Mandarin in our schools.

You can, just not consecutive future first round picks. You're still free to trade away every single first round pick you ever get, if you're dumb enough to do that.

i took his quote as a future 1st rounder with protections in 08-09. nobody is foolish enough to give up 2 future 1st rounders for yi.
