For Petrie, it's not yet rush hour in search

Geoff Petrie drove from Arco Arena to his home Friday, looking forward to catching the night's NBA playoff games.

A woman honked her horn, urging him to move along and clearly showing she wasn't familiar with the Kings' president of basketball operations.

He rushes for no one. And, yes, that method of patience still applies to his search for a new coach.

"We're not hiring a coach this weekend," Petrie said.

Chances are, it won't be for some time thereafter, either. Petrie has, however, made it clear the next coach of the Kings will not be Larry Brown, who remains under contract with the New York Knicks but reportedly is in danger of being fired and paid off for the last four years of his contract. While he is due $44 million, the potential payoff amount could be significantly less.

Brown is on his way out with Knicks president Isiah Thomas taking over as coach, multiple media outlets have reported. Petrie, though, said he has "no interest" in Brown as the successor to Rick Adelman, whose eight-season run ended May 9. Petrie is well into the process of contacting candidates and setting up interviews, although they have not begun.

I guess pretty soon we should start getting quotes from the candidates who are being contacted?

I hope the press is active on this, will brighten up the off-season if there are frequent rumor updates to talk about.

I honestly don't expect to see many "leaks" from the candidates or their agents. In fact, the only ones we might see are the "wannabes" who weren't actually in the running.

Petrie doesn't do his business in the press and I'm pretty confident that if a potential candidate DID leak it to the press he might find himself now on the outside looking in.

Considering it's quite possible the whole process could be done via conference phones without the candidates actually coming to Sacramento, the media might just be up you-know-what creek on this one. At least as far as getting quotes are concerned.

People like Voisin, however, will surely have their ideas of who's on the short list.

When Petrie was on Grant and Mike's show he said he would come back on and keep people updated on the process. For Petrie that could mean coming back to introduce the new coach. Our best shot at leaks may be the Maloofs!

Sad, but true...

;)

If Brown were a target the organization would never say a word about it until he was officially released from the Knicks or there'd be all kinds of allegations of tampering.

The suspense is killing me... or maybe it's the possibly bad outcome... hopefully the former and not the latter.

Petrie has, however, made it clear the next coach of the Kings will not be Larry Brown.

Petrie could easily have said, "The Kings admire and respect Larry Brown but he's under contract to the New York Knicks. We cannot discuss him."

He didn't. He said they have "no interest" in him. That's pretty clear. I seriously doubt if Petrie is just trying to put up a smoke screen.

I actually have to wonder howmuch input GP will have in the decision, seems like the Maloofs are calling the shots these days.

Well, not according to Geoff Petrie. He says things are going the same as they ever did. They had input before on things.

I hope we get someone young and enthusiastic. Why do the old coaches have to continue to be recycled over and over again? I would rather get someone young who has worked with the best like Avery Johnson or look at Mike Brown in Cleveland. This was his first year as a head coach and he took them to 7 games against a very good Pistons team- they easily could have won in Game 6 and could be in the ECF. Not to mention they won their first playoff series in like 17 years I think? Or made it to the playoffs for the first time in 14 years I think? Granted, they have LBJ, but I still think the coach had something to do with it. And Avery Johnson completely turned that team into a defensive team as well.

Anyway, I would rather see a new coach on the younger side.

Sounds like you want Mario Elie.

Anyone thought about Del Harris?

(If I were in Sacramento, you all would probably run me out of town. But I'm not in Sacramento, so...)

It seems like Petrie's role is one of coming up with the short list of candidates, completing coach profiles, presenting the results to the Maloofs, then sitting back and watching them go through whatever subjective process they go through to pick one. i.e. a highly paid advisor whom we can only hope somehow manipulates the Maloofs into what he believes to be the right decision.
