Niners!

I'm hoping for the best, it's not like we were going to beat Colts anyway so why not give him a shot? the injury factor does concern me though after seeing them play. That kid could get killed out there! This season is turning out not so great:( but it's Nolan's first year so give us time, we'll be back, we always are. I think Herrion's death set the tone for the season unfortunately. It was a bad omen.

I think its a good move for you guys. Hopefully he connects with Lloyd often. Now they need to bench Barlow and start Gore and I will be loving some of my fantasy pickups.

I wonder why they would start him against the Colts and not do it in Week 7 after their bye week. Colts D is looking really good making for a very rough first game for Smith. Well of course it doesn't get easier as you have the Skins in WK7

Sending him out to debut as a starter against the Colts might be part of the 49ers major plan - if that plan includes a large life-insurance policy. I may not be able to watch...I get queasy. I still have nightmares over Willis McGahee's injury. (shiver)

The kid's gotta take some licks sometime. Better sooner than later. I doubt Smith is as worried as some people here.

Roll him out to the right like Walsh did with Montana. Buy the kid some time. Yeah it's half a field, but no way would I keep him as a pocket passer. Or just 3 step drop him and let's get our tight end and fullback invloved in the mix. Choose wisely when to go to the WR's.

Hopefully, the running game is somewhat there. One can only hope. :)

Trick here is to get Jonas Jennings and Jeremy Newberry back in the lineup immediately for Smith. Both I believe are "questionable" for next week. We will need all the help we can get, and our healthy O-line is competant at best, but with injuries...blegh. i just hope Beasley brings his blocking shoes, he will be playing "last man standing" a lot on passing plays. I wouldn't be suprised to see a few more power sets to compensate for these injuries. I know Smith can move but all the same, here's hoping Freeney doesn't take Smith's head off!

My sentiments exactly. But, while I want to see Newberry and Jennings back, I want to make sure they're not coming back too soon and risking the possibility of going out again - for the remainder of the season.

I hope Smith likes the taste of turf, because I think he's going to be dining on it Sunday afternoon.

rumor has it jennings might be done for the season

Undisclosed draft pick???? Omg, somebody help our front office. Wtf is that? I've seen so many trades in football that involve great players being traded for late draft picks. Hopefully this ones not too late in the draft.

I'm beside myself on how we could not get a cornerback from anybody.

If Bill Walsh were still running the front office, I'd be fine with draft picks, but these Niners have yet to prove they know how to use their draft picks, so I'd rather have a player.

I have to wonder what game the announcers are watching. If you just listen to them, you'd think the 49ers were staging the most impressive game of the year instead of losing 14-3....

Boy, I'm so glad they put Alex in. Thank God Tim Rattay isn't out there throwing interceptions...

;)

I have one bright spot - I have Indianapolis defense on one of my fantasy teams.

:D

At least they're taking a knee and just letting the clock run out.

AND no one got carried off the field on a stretcher...

AND ...

...

Well, that's all I've got.

our running game looked good!

we were the first team to sack manning........

umm we didnt get shutout

gore is a beast!

alex is gonna bounce back..... its all a learning process for him... dont forget even the great peyton manning threw 3 picks in his first start.....

Yeah I liked what I saw today. I was watching it a bar, but left at the start of the second half so I didn't see what happened after that. Smith just looked nervous. He didn't play bad cause he's a bad qb, just nervous. Barlow and gore looked good.

Seriously, what's up with this offensive coordinator? Some of the plays he's calling are making me say, "what are u thinking?!?". Like on a 3rd and 2 in colts territory, he has smith roll out and throw a deep corner post to a reciever double covered and it gets picked off. Do we not have any quick slant plays?

That run by gore off the screen play where he got hit backwards by 3 colt defenders and then continued to go forward after that only to be tripped up by a shoelace tackle was really nice. He coulda gone all the way had it not been for that shoelace tackle.

Overall, I saw some improvement. 4 or 5 starters from our defense being hurt doesn't help any of our problems either.

I'm not saying Smith is a bad QB. Never have. What I've been saying is you don't want to take a rookie QB and throw him to the wolves like that. His first real game and he was totally and completely ineffective.

You saw Peyton Manning trying to pat him on the back and tell him, "Hey, kid. Don't worry about it", right?

This kind of game is a spirit killer. A couple more of those and any and all confidence Alex might have had will be totally and completely destroyed. That was my point all along. This isn't a contending team. Far from it. Better to bring Smith along slowly - much like a thoroughbred racehorse - then throw him in for no good reason and have him suffer a loss like that.

I would rather have seen Rattay suffer the loss.

like manning said himself.... "The best way to learn is to play, play, play, play. Theres only so much you can learn with a clipboard"

I don't think he said it in regard to Alex Smith.

But we'll see what happens. I sincerely hope I'm completely wrong and that Smith isn't at all negatively affected by what already appears to be an absymal season. We have a lot of money invested in him for the future of the 49ers. If he can't survive, we all lose.

VF, I never even read your post. I said he wasn't a bad qb from what I saw. Nothing in regards to what you said.
