I've stated before that we have a chance to make the playoffs, but reality has officially set in: WE SUCK!

Can't we just hold onto the ball to see what smith could do? Damn.

Can basketball please start? I can't watch this anymore.

This is incredible, when I started it was 14-0, I should have never turned it on. I didn't know an offense could be that bad. How long before Smith is the starter?

Well, this football Sunday started out well...

The SeaChickens did what they do so well; snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

The Rams put up a pretty classic Rams performance by once again out-passing their opponent in defeat (Martz was ever so "Martzy" today)

...then this happened.

:(

I'm glad I stopped watching, it got worse:( didn't think that was possible. Were the first games THIS bad?? We couldn't even beat Az. who were the only team we could beat last year. Not answering my phone today. Being a Niners fan the last 2 years hasn't been easy but I'm hanging in there. We'll be back!:)
On a good note, Redskins doing well and I like them.

Captain obvious alert!!!!

The Niners just do not have the talent on either side of the ball. Their O-line is decimated by injuries again. Barlow is SLOW! Gore is unproven. They have no legit defenders in the secondary. Their defense can't put any pressure on the other team's QB without blitzing their entire defense.

Other that I think they will be fine.

The NBA can't get here soon enough!

Reggie Bush might as well pick his niner jersey now.......
Watching my team lose is sooooo depressing for me, but I think having a horrible year and then picking up reggie bush would really put our franchise back on the right track.

Plus, you guys know that alex smith and reggie bush played as teammates in highschool, right? They would play so good together.

We still have an alright chance in the division, but if we continue to lose, then the draft rights to reggie bush would become more of a reality.

Yeah I know fillmoe, I heard that there was a lot of cowboy fans there and they were really loud especially at the end of the game. I watched it at a sports bar in long beach and the niner game was on mute so I couldn't tell.

As much as it would pain me to tank the season (because for whatever reason I'd still watch), that is a truely tempting thought with Reggie Bush on deck for the draft. He's just that good and as ONEZERO pointed out, I bet he and Smith would light it up if we could somehow gel our offensive line. I'd love to see a backfield of Alex Smith, Reggie Bush and Fred Beasley. Of course, we may have some competition from the Packers who have apparently forgotten how to win. Then again, we've played so badly we won't have to tank the season, we'll just keep losing by making our defense play 37 minutes a game because that's a great way to win ballgames. YIKES!

Niners promote No. 1 pick Smith to starting QBBy GREG BEACHAM, AP Sports Writer
October 4, 2005

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Overall No. 1 draft pick Alex Smith was promoted to be the San Francisco 49ers' starting quarterback on Tuesday, ascending to the job after just four games as Tim Rattay's backup.

Smith will make his first NFL start on Sunday against Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts at Candlestick Park. The former Utah star played in two of the 49ers' first four games, mopping up in losses to Philadelphia and Arizona. ``I feel that Alex gives us the best chance to win, and I believe he's ready,'' San Francisco coach Mike Nolan said. ``Tim has handled everything very well, but at this time in the process, I believe it's time to get Alex in the game. ... At 1-3, we didn't draft Alex to just sit him on the bench. At 1-3, I believe we need to begin to utilize him.''

Rattay completed 57.7 percent of his passes this season for 677 yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions. He compiled impressive statistics in a season-opening win over St. Louis and a last-minute loss to Dallas.

But the 49ers' offense has been mostly terrible, with stark deficiencies in time of possession, total yards (1,989-995) and points (132-76) -- and Rattay has been shaky and indecisive in the fourth quarter, when San Francisco has been outscored 48-0.

The 49ers managed just 168 total yards in last Sunday's 31-14 loss to Arizona in Mexico City. San Francisco's offense was shut out by the Cardinals, though Smith went 6-of-10 -- his first NFL completions -- for 34 yards after Rattay was pulled in the fourth quarter.

Smith was the 49ers' starter in their first two exhibition games, but he struggled to move the offense. His throws frequently were hurried and inaccurate, and he still was learning the intricacies of the West Coast offense.

Nolan gave the starting job to Rattay, Jeff Garcia's longtime backup who had an impressive preseason. The seventh-round draft pick started nine games in 2004 while recovering from three injuries.

At the time, Nolan said it was important not to be ``wishy-washy'' with the decision so Rattay could play without fear. But after three straight dismal performances by San Francisco's offense, Nolan made a change anyway.

Though Smith was a second-stringer in September, he got nearly as much practice time as Rattay. The natural zip on Smith's practice throws is obvious, and his mobility as a former spread-option quarterback with the Utes is something Rattay can't match.

``He's been well-prepared every week,'' Nolan said. ``That's one of the things that's impressed me. I've watched that, and he's prepared from that standpoint. If he gets hit hard or makes a mistake, it's not very often that he comes back and does the same thing.''

Smith didn't immediately return a call to his cell phone. The 49ers had the day off Tuesday. Smith doesn't get an easy assignment in his debut against the unbeaten Colts. Starting left tackle Jonas Jennings is unlikely to play with a torn labrum in his shoulder -- which means Indianapolis defensive end Dwight Freeney will probably go against backup Anthony Clement, who was embarrassed by Arizona's Bertrand Barry last Sunday. ``There's always game plan things that you take into consideration, and that will be one of them,'' Nolan acknowledged. ``I believe everyone who plays Indianapolis addresses the Freeney issue, and that will be attended to. I believe it's the right time. I don't get too much into basing the right time on the opponent.''

I have no problem at all with this decision. I think it was the right move to let him get his feet wet first, so to speak. Now, with a few snaps under his belt AND Rattay clearly not able to click with the offense to get the job done, Smith should step forward.

Let's see what the kid can do. We do have a lot of money and faith invested in him. I just hope the offensive line is up to the task of protecting him.

Smith should have been named starter from the get go. Probably could have won at least one more.

Hindsight is always 20-20. Even then, there is no way to prove OR disprove your statement.

The team might have won at least one more or they might have lost the one win we have. There is NO way to tell.

I'm just interested in seeing most of all if the front line can give him enough protection. If not, it could get even uglier than it has been so far...

i think they should have at least waited a little longer. Rattay was playing pretty well, and i think if arnez battle was playing the other night, he might have made a difference.

Even if he hadn't won more games, he wasn't chosen in the draft to sit behind some chump named Rattay. That guy is just plain awful. He is worse than Jake Plummer on a bad day.

Just because someone is chosen at the top of the draft, it doesn't automatically mean they should step into the starting role.

In this case, instead of pounding your chest about him starting, you'd better get on your knees and pray the front lines holds. If it doesn't, the 49ers may have the most expensive injured QB in the league today...

Who would you rather see pounded into the turf? Rattay ... or Smith?

Our front line is full of holes and big gaping wounds. I would much rather Rattay suffered the indignities than our future.

Why does rattay have to be a chump? He gave you hope in the early games and just because he isn't the savior you were hoping for, you turn your back on him? He was just a product of the players around him, and i thought he did a pretty good job with what he had. Even if he didn't produce as many wins as you would like.

Both actually, I'm a Charger fan remember.

In no way was I pounding my chest saying Smith should have started from the beginning. I knew Rattay sucked, now everyone else knows as well.
