Nhl 2009

I know we have several hockey fans on this forum and I guess we can talk a little bit about playoff games, individual awards etc.

My dry predictions:

Final: Detroit-Boston
SCW: Detroit

MVP: Ovechkin ... my pick: Ovechkin
Lady Byng (sportsmanship): Datsyuk ... my pick: Datsyuk
Calder (best rookie): Mason ... my pick: Mason
Vezina (best keeper): Thomas ... my pick: Nabokov or Mason
James Norris (best defender): Green ... my pick: Wideman (I think the very best D has to be two-way good)
Selke (best defensive forward): Datsyuk ... my pick: Datsuyk

Would love to see San Jose - Boston for the cup. I fear Boston is too streaky to get there though.

Honest Bruins fan here and Im really suprised and excited with how this season went down. After losing in the playoffs last year I thought we would come into this season and end up with a 4-5 seed at best. Boy was I wrong. I didnt think Ryder would improve our scoring enough and I really thought Chara was overrated defender.

I still think Chara is a tad overrated but our young players REALLY stepped it up and Im really glad we didnt trade Kessel. Lucic is the man around here and The Recchi trade has worked out wayy better than I think anyone expected.

That being said, Montreal scares the Sh!t out of me ... That team travels so well, especially to Boston and I fear they will upset us in the first round yet again, even though they havent beat us all year ( in regulation ).

If the B's can get past the habs then I think we can make it to the Stanley Cup, where I can see Joe Thornton getting some serious revenge ..

Revenge for being the A-Rod of hockey? That trade was painful but it was necessary. Even with the Sharks he has managed to disappear when they need him most in the playoffs.

I too was simply excited that the B's were just in the hunt again last year and am thrilled with the rapid progress.

Go Flyers!! I had high hopes for them this year, especially after their run last year, but they were unlucky there in the end and drew the Penguins in the first round, which equals loss. Anyway..

Final
: Detroit-Washington
SCW: Detroit

IMPO, the best final entertainment-wise would be either SJ-WSH or DET-WSH ... however, Boston is too good defensively and has a lot of scoring options. I think they will make it this year. NJ has a great goaltending and very organized, and Parise has been really good but I do not see them winning the East. Washington can beat any team but it is really hard to win the cup with a vulnerable D and unpredictable G.

Montreal is fun to watch and Kovalev is Kovalev again but this team is a mess now and it strats with the managment. I do not think players feel comfortable there and know what to expect. Bob Gainey has to go this summer!

Vancouver has no chances to win the Cup but they can beat some favorites. Calgary has a great roster but both Iginla and Phaneuf have to play better.

Montreal for the win. I am a huge Habs fan. This is going to be an excellent series.

Honestly I think the playoffs this year are going to be crazy. I picked Detroit and Washington to make the Finals, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised if neither makes it. I think the top seeds in both conferences are gonna have a tough time, because almost all the teams at the bottom are talented under-achievers (Habs, Rangers, Flames) or teams riding an insane hot streak (Blues, 'Canes). I wouldn't be shocked to see upsets in every round

Decent day one of the playoffs. Impressive win by the Rangers. Stupid Penguins and stupid Crosby though . I hope that wasn't a sign of things to come, because I expected this to be a much better series than the one they had last year.

This has more to do with Anaheim's netminding than the Sharks falling apart. They've gotten good shots and opportunities, they just keep getting turned away and hit a few posts. If they can score first in the next game maybe they'll shake the kid a bit.

No matter what it has to do with, the end result is the same. Another amazing regular season for the Sharks, and a dismal postseason.

Hopefully, they can get a couple big road wins coming up and prove me (and everyone else) wrong.

SJ does too many dumb defensive mistakes. They did it last year .. they are doing it again now. Anaheim made like 20 shots but at least 5 of them were A+ .... SJ made 2000000000000 shots but they were C, B class ones. Have you noticed that they make almost every opposing goalkeeper look like Vladislav Tretiak at his best years?? They just do not play smart. Yes, they are better offensively but if your offense brings 1-on-1s - this is a bad offense. They just do not have any defensive awareness. How many times have you seen Anaheim players leaving his man open in this series? Nabby faces way too many lethal shots and most of them come from defensive mistakes. Sharks have to make a lot of adjustments. I never liked SoCal teams, so I hope Sharks will do something in Orange but the way they play is childish. It is like they have never seen any playoff hockey :(

Really bad performance by SJ but it is a great post season ... Washington vs. Pittsburgh - man, it is gonna be something special!!! Malkin vs. Ovechkin, Crosby vs. Semin ... gonna be better than the cup games

sigh. San Jose, what's it going to take? Best year in franchise history and you can't even take a 8 seed to 7 games? C'mon.

Just gone done seeing the 3rd of Game 1, and I tell you what - that is how Hockey is supposed to be played. Caps 3-2 Final, lead series 1-0.

Great first game!!! I like both teams but the Caps are more liked by me. I like their offensive style and it is very hard to root against Simeon Varlamov. This young guy has been great for them and is one the biggest stories so far. And that save was unbelievable!!

And I have to mention the Hawks. They just cannot give up. I still thank that Vancouver is better and can actually win the Cup. It was more exciting with Pavel Bure but I can live with our new style too :) We are good again :)
