Summertime Tidbits on the Sacramento Kings
The Summer Scoop - June 9, 2005
by Devin Blankenship
Summertime…
The offseason at the Sacramento Kings Practice Facility is a lot like summer school.
You have some guys that are regulars in there every day, some guys that make appearances every once in awhile, and then others who go back home for vacation or to work out in their hometown.
So far the usual suspects that have been seen day in and day out at the facility include Mike Bibby and Bobby Jackson—workout beasts that can’t get enough hoops. Another regular in the weight room has been Greg Ostertag, who has been working his behind off with strength and conditioning coach Al Biancani.
Kevin Martin recently returned from Ohio and has been working out everyday this week to put some muscle on his frame. He plans on staying in Sacramento throughout the rest of the summer.
Peja Stojakovic was also a regular everyday before heading off to Greece at the end of May. He was even joined one day by a nicely tanned Vlade Divac, who was in Sacramento and came by the facility to say hello to familiar faces. One thing you didn’t see was Vlade lifting any weights or working out, in lieu of last season’s injury to his back.
Draft Time…
Most of the Kings front office is in Chicago for the NBA’s annual pre-draft camp, checking out the attendees and getting a feel for how the draft may play out.
So far Sacramento has been busy with workouts over the last three weeks, bringing in a steady stream of guys to look at. Because of the team’s closed door policy when it comes to the draft, I won’t mention any particular names, but it has been a wide variety of players.
With the 23rd pick, the Kings will most likely be looking to take the best player available, and if recent drafts are any indication, Sacramento should be able to get a decent performer at that spot. Past 23rd picks include Tayshaun Prince, Travis Best, Devean George, and Sacramento’s own Bobby Jackson.
New Uni’s…
For those merchandise hungry fans who can’t get enough Kings gear, word on the street is that the Kings will unveil an alternate uniform next season—one that will use colors never before associated with the team.
I can confirm that I’ve gotten a sneak peek at the unis and that I’m a big fan. I’m also confident that not many people are going to be able to guess what they are going to look like. You’re going to have to wait until October!
