and Napear is screaming at callers. Damn its hard rooting for this...

This doesn't make sense. I am getting a bad feeling about this...

Thanks Capt. Solo

Everybody needs to take a deep breath and calm down. All the tweets, rumors, etc. coming out of NY are just that - tweets, rumors, and spin control. If KJ is going to NY, I think it's a good sign. Keep in mind that no matter what happens, there's gonna have to be a face-saving spin put on it as far as someone (read Maloofs) is concerned. I think the owners telling a media person - on or off the record - they want the Kings to stay in Sacramento is huge, as it pretty much leaves it to the Maloofs to quit jerking the city, KJ, the fans, etc. around and find a way to make it work. That's most likely IMHO why KJ is on his way back east.

I'm going to continue to be optimistic for the simple reason I don't see the NBA BOG really wanting to add to the s***storm. They'll do whatever they can to end it on a note that doesn't make them look like they're co-signing the Maloof lunacy.

Wouldn't it be a take it or leave it deal in front of the Maloofs?

That's what I thought. I take it or leave it deal to the City is not a good sign.

As to the billionaires, I understand there is more interest than just Burkle but what would they have to do with this? Unless the Maloofs want to sell - do they? - any mention of billionaires makes no sense. Could it be that that the NBA is trying to broker a deal where some debt is excused if the team is sold to another party? That seems extreme and would cause the citizens to get pitchforks. Or, maybe it's just a lengthening of some payback time that would result in a sale of the team, a benefit to the Maloofs to do it, and a delay in payback to the city.

My head hurts.

In the back of my hed and I am sure in the back of many is that the Maloofs are in no position to run an NBA team.

Argh, or maybe a sale is in progress and it takes KJ's input to change names on the bond issue and whatever other papers there are.

Grant is saying that the NBA can't "force" the Maloofs out. But then he says the NBA does have "leverage". I don't give a sh** whether the NBA forces them out or leverages them out. Just get them out. Then Grant says they don't "have" to sell. Well, they didn't "have" to sell the Palms either, but they did, because they were under tremendous financial pressure. They didn't have to sell their beer distributorship, but they did, because they were under financial pressure. I'm tired of this BS.

I don't understand the purpose of putting them in a room to talk. KJ is not authorized to change anything on the city's end and I would be shocked if he would even consider that anyway. This is a three way party deal and one party is unethical and untrustworthy. You can't enter into a deal with a party you can't trust.

Grant is walking a very, very, very slippery slope right now. He can say that his show is unrelated to the Maloofs or the Kings, etc. but bottom line is he's wearing two hats 24/7 and the biggest one is owned by MSE. I almost feel sorry for him. He can't be very happy about this position.

They defaulted on their loans for the Palms and the banks took them, they didn't sell...that wasn't their choice.

The only way it makes sense to me is if it's a face-saving situation for the Maloofs.

Agreed...but the fact that he even mentioned that the NBA can LEVERAGE them kind of speaks volumes.

They don't HAVE to sell but it makes the most sense. Certainly the Maloofs have concluded that they are in bad shape. I think the best the Maloofs can do (and how about their partners?) is sell at a decent rate, get a marvelous low interest loan from the NBA to cover all their basketball related debt, and bow out. KJ can't really do anything except look on 'cause he as our weak assed mayor has no real power. It would be polite to have him witness the sale and have an opportunity to comment or have a wonderful photo-op with all involved to help keep the Maloof's reputation intact.

What do I know?

I remember they retained a very small percentage of ownership as part of a "sale", but that's besides the point. If the NBA exerts every lever they've got they can make it very painful for the Maloofs. They may not "have" to sell, but at the end of the day they may very much "want" to sell.

I don't think anyone has said they cannot do the deal. Did I miss something?

Well...not that cut and dry in those words, but they did say there was 'unresolved issues' with the deal and that they couldn't make any money with it. My understanding of all this is: The Maloofs want more control/money...
They want the deal to be on THEIR terms.

In other words...more stalling that would lead to running out of time under the current deal, with the hopes of relocation.

Unresolved issues isn't a big deal in negotiations. What the Maloofs want and what they eventually end up with are not mutually exclusive.

I don't see KJ changing/altering any terms of the arena deal...as was suggested earlier: take it or leave it! Soooo...the possibility of a stalemate seems good, throwing off the development timeline...killing the deal.

I’m not that excited.

It’s not just the 3 million dollars in predevelopment costs. The Maloofs said they have an unspecified objection to the 30 year lease, and if they shorten that term AEG’s financial commitment has to go down. Plus, Peaches has said the Maloofs are negotiating really hard on the revenue streams going to the city and AEG. I don’t think the city has any more leverage, and the Maloofs are dropping fire bombs about their being very concerned about the general fund and STOP. It looks like they want KJ to put more up for a vote, so it can fail. Or, they can push AEG so hard that they walk away.

KJ wanted to come, but Stern told him he didn’t need to come. Stern believed this turned on whether the BOG was satisfied with the representations of Stern and Bennett that the deal was fair the Maloofs agreed to the frame work. That was the Maloofs attack. We didn’t make this deal, it’s unfair, would you take it?

After that argument, KJ has been called in from the bull pen. Possibility, to meet only with the Maloofs. To me, that’s not real encouraging. It sounds like owners backing owners broke through at least some of Stern’s fire wall. Best case, the BOG gave the Maloofs counter instructions on the split of the predevelopment costs, perhaps the Maloofs not having to cover AEG’s share and somebody picking that 1.5 up, and instructions to get back to work. If that’s the case, the owners club tried to find a middle ground but rebuked the commissioner, emboldened the Maloofs, and the city has to deal with open ended bargaining with a party that can’t remain her with no assurances Stern can save the city.

Total guess. I would say the odds of the team staying down to 30%.

Isn't it pretty much standard practice that the party causing the delay cannot take advantage of the delay?

I'm not going to get drawn into a spiral of negative thinking and doomsday rhetoric, Circa. Just can't do it. I've gone far enough to the dark side with my personal animosity towards all things Maloof. I will continue to believe Stern and KJ can and will get the job done. :)
