New "Hella Proud" commercial is pretty good.

I've always known "hella" and "helluva" to be a Cali thing -- not just a NorCal thing. I don't trust Wikipedia any further than I can .... well, you get the point. I don't know how they can possibly know for certain where it originated from. It's pure speculation (don't care what their study/source claims). I could easily claim that I was the first to use the term back in the early 80's and I'm not from the Bay. Also, I started the ranch dressing w/ pizza fad back in the day too ;)

Very nice commercial, it gets me pumped up, I love our squad, but it kinda bothered me that I haven't seen Koufos, Anderson, Curry, Dukan and Moreland in the commercial as well, I know it's a short commercial but I think every player on the squad should be in it, because every player will contribute in the season.
I really loved the commercial, And I loved how the show the faces of the players at the end.
I am "hella" proud of this Kings team this season and I hope they will show us they are "hella" proud of themselves and their crowd and make it to the playoffs.

Koufos was the one notable exception -- Anderson making his way into the lineup was probably not foreseen at the time. But Kosta...maybe Kosta had something else to attend to that day?

I think he just doesn't have a marketable personality/look and he doesn't it seems.

OK, so I am wondering where all you guys are hiding, because I have ONE friend who drops a "hella" occasionally, and that's it. NOBODY I know uses it (family, work, friends, etc.). Just.....bizarre.

Pretty cringey in my humble, poopy stinkin' opinion. Trying too hard. No harm no foul though, not a biggie.
I get that it's cringe worthy but it's not from people trying too hard. It's ingrained in the vocabulary here so it's not something people say to try and be cool. You just say it without even thinking about it. Most people say it more when they're younger but I still find myself saying it here and there.

Hmm, perhaps I just haven't spent enough time in NorCal in the last few decades. I never even knew it was specifically a NorCal thing. Have used the word a few times, have heard it used occasionally. Never thought much about it one way or the other. Assumed it was just a shortening of "hell of a". Its hardly as ubiquitous to the region as "eh" is to Canada or "dude" is to surfers, at least in my experience.

Just randomly remembered this but there's a Beastie Boys song (they are from NYC) where they actually reference hella and how they don't say it because they are from the east coast.

Well, it generally goes out of regular use about the time you hit 22. So if you don't know any teens, you don't hear it. It is also more prominent in the Bay Area--absolutely an exclusive NorCal "thing" after hating the Dodgers/Lakers. It was the first thing I heard about from SoCal kids on "what's annoying about living 'Up North'" my Freshman year of college in the Mid-'90's. When the iconic SoCal band No Doubt released the track "Hella Good," people from Orange County were ready to throw themselves off a bridge.

Another thing that annoys people from the southland: not saying "the" in front of our freeway names.

So we should say THE I-50? Like there's more than one? That's hella stupid. ;)

You know, if I were going from Woodland to Folsom, I'd take 5 to 50. But if I were going from San Diego to Irvine, I'd take the 5 to the 405. It's a bit weird in that my grammatical representation of the same thing is different depending on where I am.

Interestingly having lived down there briefly when I was younger, I am caught in between -- I'd take 5 to The 405. What I can't remember is whether that was me mixing my regional dialects by being caught in between, or whether that was actually local usage. The 405 is definitely THE 405, but I-5...don't recall.

Um, dude? I'm wondering how you could be surrounded by people who don't use it. And remember,I live in the middle of a freaking forest.
As I posted earlier in this thread, I haven't heard that word in years and I live here. But since this thread started, I've been asking people (family, friends and co-workers) about the word and (so far) everyone has heard the word, but hasn't heard it used in recent years. I'm not suggesting that - therefore - the word isn't being used. But I am suggesting that it's used in certain circles and not used in other circles.

Have any of the people you asked been teenagers? Some of the people in the thread have suggested that its a terminology, like calling somebody dude or something, that might fade as you get older. So everybody goes through a "hella" phase, but as they and their friends age its just not used very much between them anymore.

I have no opinion on whether that's true or not actually. I was surprised the use of the term even inspired this thread. Didn't jump out to me as exceptional, so I just may not have been paying attention.
