NBA on ABC

This seems to be on the verge of becoming a circular argument; I think that the general consensus is that TNT has the best broadcast of the three. And I, for one, am not trying to argue that Breen/Brown are "great," or "best in the world" as Supes put it. The gist of my statement was that 1) Breen/Brown are ABC's "A-team," 2) They work well together, and do a good job calling games, and c) they compare well to the broadcast teams that NBC used to have.

Oh okay...

But the "artsy" camera angles still don't do anything for me.

:p

I generally can't stand the Pussycat Dolls or their "music", for lack of a better word, but the ABC theme music doesn't bother me so much. Maybe it's because the lead girl is fly.

Yeah, the PC dolls song is pretty annoying. But if watched on "mute", it's not that bad.

I liked it back when TNT paired Walton with Tolbert. Walton would spend the entire game repeating stupid comments, and Tolbert would basically call him an idiot without actually calling him an idiot. Those were fun times.

Tolbert, Mark Jackson now, Collins are all superior. Tolbert the #1 as he can actually combine humor with solid + occasionally insightful analysis.

P.S. Hubie generally knows basketball but IMO is overrated, and still to this day annoys me with a delivery clearly designed to cover up a slow processor: "and then he gives you...the rebounds and then...also the blocks and...". One thing I've noticed about him though is that he has been a better commentator since returning form the coaching foray. Why? Becuase now he actually knows the players. By the late 90's he was actually one of the WORST commentators in the league for just talking out of his *** and missing all the nuances of the players. I can quite clearly remember him doing his slow putter putter delivery finishing with Kevin Willis' praises as a shotblocker. But I absolutely think that coaching again helped him, as he had to learn all the players' tendencies as a coach and now can at least putter coherently.

i don't like mike breen. i liked the duo of hubie and doc rivers before doc got the coaching gig in boston. they were tolerable.

TNT by far has the best annoucing crew and analysts. i absolutly adore the duo of marv albert and steve kerr, but i wish they;d bring back mike fratello to make the ultimate trio once again. marv, czar and kerr was my absolute favorite!!! i really enjoy listening to doug collins. he's great! i'm not a huge fan of reggie miller. he's ok but nothing special.

i'm actually starting to not hate charles as much. i probably will when he bashes the kings again, but i've actually really like him this postseason. TNT has the best after show. i don't like magic, but ernie, kenny and charles are absolute gold. i jsut love how TNT pokes fun at everything. the photoshop pictures they put up are hilarious! the one tonight of charles in the mavs jersey swiming in the bay in front or alcatraz had me rolling.

I'd forgotten about that, but you're right. I was actually able to tolerate Walton because of Tolbert's asides.

Those WERE fun times.

I may just be a little older than most, or may be I enjoyed watching basketball in the 80s as compared with the 90s, but I have always thought CBS had the best intro hands down, and everything since has just been subpar. May be these intros were only used for playoff time (I can't recall), but even still, I think it has yet to be topped since.

An example...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZcb7qMrP9g

I have no problem lasting the 2:09 at all. How? I don't click on the link...

;)

This is kind of false advertising; I mean it's not like it's 2:09 of a continuous song... it's more like four segments spliced together.

Another reason to dislike ABC - scheduling

For round 2, both the Cavs/Nets and Spurs/Suns played game 2 of their respective series on Tuesday, and the Jazz/Warriors played game 2 on Wednesday. The other second round series (Pistons/Bulls) had 2 full days off for travel from Detroit to Chicago for game 3.

Expecting this same pattern to be followed for the other series, I was quite looking forward to the Spurs/Suns game today. Then I checked the schedule. Of course ABC is going to delay both the Cavs/Nets and Spurs/Suns game 3s to Saturday (meaning 3 full days for travel for those teams), and bump the Jazz/Warriors game up to Friday (meaning on 1 full day for travel).

I know, I know, it's all about the almighty dollar, but I would think the NBA would also want to give each team the same amount of rest between games, regardless of t.v. scheduling. Oh well. [minor complaint over]

When you consider the fact that the winner of the Jazz/Warriors series is probably going to lose in the WCF, it's really irrelevant.

But I guess this is the wrong postseason to make predictions like that, huh?

The league is the one that schedules the games, not the networks.

I wasn't clear --- I should've blamed the league for wanting to put more games on ABC on the weekend (instead of ESPN or TNT on a weekday night). ABC is the beneficiary.

well it's understandable to put weekend's games on a network that is free.

:)

ABC's problem is that they don't seem to really care that they have the NBA contract and even if they did care enough to make it better, the best guys for the job all work for TNT.

I'm with ya Ryan. Abc just keeps going from bad to worse. I didn't think it could get any worse until I saw the finals. Gah

The NBA on NBC Theme song.

The day Tesh's music might die

It was about 3 o'clock in the morning and then-Entertainment Tonight host John Tesh, across the globe covering the Tour de France, had an early-morning revelation in his hotel room in the city of Pau. It was July 1990 and Tesh knew NBC was taking over NBA broadcasting rights from CBS. It needed a theme song.

Tesh already had received an Emmy for his music for the Pan American Games in 1983 and composed other sports television music, including the theme song played during CBS's Tour de France coverage in the late 1980s. Like the tales of other enduring rock songs, Tesh recalls a memorable story of how he gave birth to what has become the theme song of NBC's coverage of NBA games.

"It just came into my head," Tesh, who now devotes most of his time to his musical career, told ESPN.com on Wednesday. "So I called my message machine and sang the chorus. Then I called back 30 minutes later and sang the verse."

When Tesh got home, he played the song that would soon become known as "Roundball Rock" on the piano. He also watched an NBA game and played the music to the approximate speed of a fast break (122 beats per minute). After paying $15,000 to have a Los Angeles orchestra record the song, he sent a tape to NBC, but he didn't want them to know that he wrote it.

"The name on the tape was Jay Franklin, because my middle name is Frank," Tesh said. "But the problem was that when they called me up, I said they had the wrong number." After Tesh finally realized that he was "Jay Franklin," he worked out a deal with NBC where they would make his song the theme of "NBA on NBC" broadcasts and pay him royalties every time they played it.

"It's a great piece of music and it definitely became synonymous with the NBA on NBC over the years," NBC Sports spokesman Kevin Sullivan said. "When you hear that music, you know exactly what's coming up."

But when Tesh plays the song at concerts, he said most people are surprised to hear the song. "Ninety-nine percent of the crowd doesn't know I wrote this theme," said Tesh, whose 'demo' was never re-recorded. "NBC has never given me a single credit on the air. I have no animosity toward them. I'm sure it's just an oversight that's typical for musicians."

For the past 12 seasons, NBC has played the song about 12,000 times, or about 20 times per game when going to commercial or during halftime. Tesh said checks are about two years behind and that he has made "in the six figures" in royalties each year.
Although the song can be heard on Tesh's recordings "Victory: The Sports Collection" and "Live at Red Rocks," Wednesday night could be the last time that fans hear the music that has become so familiar over the past decade. With ABC/ESPN taking over NBA broadcast rights next season, the song's future remains uncertain.

Tesh, who recently licensed the song for the upcoming movie "Like Mike," insists that won't be the case. Since he owns both the copyright and the publishing rights, he has the right to shop it around. "I'm an entrepreneur, I'll find a home for it," Tesh said.
Although ABC has said it would compose its own music, Tesh said the network has since expressed interest in "Roundball Rock." This week, Tesh proposed that ABC take the theme and have famous entertainers like Eric Clapton and Billy Joel perform it. "I'm also perfectly willing to sell it to the NBA if they want it," Tesh said.

"Even if I do something with it in the future, the last time on NBC is still going to be bittersweet," Tesh said.
