JJ makes a fair point, but a main problem is that people aren't even turning on their TVs anymore.
TV ratings have been continuously dropping for the NBA compared to the NFL. I think one big factor is how you can't watch NBA games unless you have a cable/YouTube subscription. The cheapest option is $83/month at nearly $1,000 a year to watch your closest geographic team play basketball. There is no real incentive for anyone to get the NBA League pass if it doesn't include their local team.
On the other hand, NFL games are always on local channels that only require an antenna. Without paying a single subscription dime, you get access to 5 free NFL games on Sunday that always include your local favorite team. With the remaining 4 games, you're being exposed to 8 other teams in the league. During their halftime shows, they actually cover what's going on around the other live games and show you real gameplay footage rather than chosen highlights for star players. All of these things combined allows the average fan to get a good grasp of what's going on around the league.
The NBA has nothing remotely close to what the NFL offers. I don't even understand how the NBA can have their crazy tv deals when ratings are dying. Interest in the league is peaking. I don't know how profitable the social media side is, but it doesn't mean much when those eyes aren't getting glued to games.
Going back to what JJ said, there's no storyline in the NBA because I don't think there's been anyone who's been able to grab the torch from LeBron or Steph as the next face of the league. They've been really pushing Wemby onto the masses and I think they desperately need him to hit. Luka is too much of a whiner with an unlikable pouty face. Tatum is too quiet and boring. Edwards has grand charisma, but he's very immature and hasn't reached superstar level. There's no player for us to connect to the next generation.
The NBA storylines are currently very boring. Most people probably wouldn't even know that OKC holds the #1 seed in the west.
