Even when healthy Zion Williamson would not help our defense. History tells us that stacking a bunch of big-time scorers together ultimately leads to diminishing returns. But more importantly, I can't imagine anyone is looking at the state of the New Orleans Pelicans right now and saying to themselves: "I want some of that!" Buyer beware.

This trophy stuff is embarrassing imagine the nfl regular season was so bad they needed to add bonuses and fake trophy’s to get players to play harder
I don’t think you can compare anything to the NFL. Pretty easy to keep the attention of the masses when you only have a 17 game season.

I think the Cup has been a success so far but it has a ways to go to be really intriguing. Sounds like the plan is to move it to later in the season next year and Id imagine they start raising the stakes some.

MLB doesn’t have this problem with twice the games anytime they want the players to care they pay them.

maybe I’m not fully understanding your position, are you thinking the purpose of the NBA Cup is to keep players interested in the regular season? If so I think the NBA is hoping to give casual NBA fans a new reason to tune in during a long season.

Dear NBA,

please eliminate the NBA participation cup and if you want more viewership, reduce the amount of games in a season and shorten the NBA Playoff format just for starters and that's without mentioning to allow NBA defense to be played on NBA offensive players

He makes some good points here. Brief summary for those that don’t want to watch: League has been “in trouble” for the entirety of its existence and every few years a “unicorn” event comes along and things trend up. League as a whole is doing well, especially internationally. Points out that ratings don’t really matter given the mega tv deal they just got and he believes ratings are down but interest is not (nba consumed in many ways other than watching full games on tv.

I'm not sure if it even matters unless the "unicorn" is intriguing in some way other than just merely being good at basketball. Being a good basketball player in 2024 is not really aesthetically pleasing. They're just grinding all game to get whistles instead of actually outplaying and outsmarting their opponents.

yeh I do think the foul seekers and the cookie cutter team builds/style of play are the two biggest things to address. The foul thing can be fixed but teams all looking the same might be a bit more difficult. Having said that, I still love watching the NBA and will easily choose to watch it over college ball which doesn’t have the foul merchants and allows more defense. The talent is the show, every night you see some player make an impossible shot or displace some other freak skill. That’s the draw for me.

I’ll say it’s tough going from fiba/ Olympics to nba it’s night and day. Between the play styles, refs letting them play it’s amazing the last two minutes of close games is theater there’s no time outs after every possession
