I think we should push our goal to signing a FA to 2011. Given to what the cap is going to be and how the 2010 free agents will eat alot of teams cap room. I think looking at the current situation we could probably trade our expiring this year and some our long term contracts (such as Noc, Beno and Garcia) for contracts that end in 2011. I am sure we get a couple teams to bite so they have a shot of getting enough room to sign a FA in 2010 or aviod getting taxed like NO.

First off I would have to check and see if the Knicks haven't already given away that draft pick, or either one of the picks before and after it, since you can't trade first round picks in consecutive years.

Curry's contract is up after the 2010/2011 season, but Jefferies isn't up until after the 2011/2012 season. He has an early termination option after the 2010/2011 season, but thats always a players option, and I doubt in the current times he would take it and give up 6 mil a year.

The knicks are gaining a little more cap space for after the 2010 season, which may intice them, but their giving up a pretty good young player with potential. Right now I think flexability is something we want as a team, and we've waited too long to get it to just turn around and give it up again for another couple of years. Next year, KT's salary and Mikkie Moore's left over 2 mil come off the books. That along with whatever we have left over from this year could be valuable.

Lets not forget that its not just about having cap space to sign someone. Its also about having cap space to make trades. If we were lets say 10 mil under the cap and wanted to trade, lets say Nocioni who makes 7 mil for a player making 15 mil, we could do it because we could absorb the rest of the incoming players salary with our cap space. You never know who or when someone's going to become available. So no, I wouldn't do the trade. I think keeping our cap space for something substantial is more important.

The Knicks have spent $20M in luxury tax every yr of what 5 years. So, money isn't going to due it. FA's will be signing for less, so how much cap space they'll need should be less.

Yes we will lose Thomas' and Moore's money but, we'll add a 1st round pick and everyone except Noc will be getting a raise. Plus Sergio will be up for an extention. The actual cap space doesn't end up being as big when you figure in the additional expenses. We'll be lucky to end up with $5M plus the carryover from this year.

If were going to resign Sergio, the first contract we need to move is Beno. His is the longest and most expensive, and the most unnecessary because of our depth at guard. Also, our SF's are all very versitile. Noc is a 3/4, Donte is a 3/4, Garcia is a 2/3, and Omri has played the 2/3 and a little Point/Forward in VSL, similar to Hedo.

I think your idea of teaming cap space and a player to trade for an upgrade, is the right idea. But, I'd move Beno. Noc's contract is declining and the last year isn't guaranteed. I'd like to see the Kings use their cap space to move Beno, sometime between now and next summer. Using Thomas's expiring will require taking on an addition contract, which if that contract is for a player of need, would be ok. But, if we can't swing a great talent, I'm be willing to let his contract expire and keep the cap space until the right player became available.

Easier said than done. Who do you know that will take an underachieving, over paid point guard? If you find that team, let me know, I've got the Brooklyn Bridge for sale.:eek::rolleyes:

After his PG heavy draft, it may be difficult. But, every team has it's worts. With that salary cap continueing to drop and more team moving closer to the luxury tax territory, our cap space will be a major incentive for teams to agree to a trade. I don't have a crytal ball, but between now and the trade deadline, someone will want Beno. Now, tell me more about this Bridge that's for sale.

Actually the Jeffries contract has a team option in 2011 so his contract would expire the same time as Curry. Look this would position the Kings with enough cap space to get a marque FA in 2011 and 2012 pick is ok since 2010 pick is the only pick that New York does not have.

orlando doesnt have a back up pg, nelson just came back from an injury. you never know.... phoenix doesnt have a back up for nash either, but you would probably have to give a young player or a like greene/brockman and/or a pick for ben wallace to get rid of him. it would make the suns pretty deep but they would still have no center...

im not trying to start some crazy trade thread again but seriously... there arent very many teams that would have much use for beno... not with the length of his contract, what was petrie thinking giving him a 5 year deal? 3 years wouldve been great but 5?

the hornets need a back up pg... beno/thomas and cash for chandler and peterson would work... mo would just sit on the bench for a year then we can trade him as an expiring contract the next season...

yeah we're in a f'd up situation with some of our contracts....

I think were pretty much in agreement, except on the money that has to be spent next year. Sergio is the only one that has to be signed to an extension. Hawes is signed thru the next two years before a qualifying offer has to be made. Thompson and Greene are signed thru the next three years before a qualifying is necessary. Before then it simply a team option. So unless I'm figuring wrong the Kings should have more money than what you posted. And, no offense, but I hope that I'm right.

If we could find a taker for Beno, I would be all for it. As long as its to our advantage. The time has come for us to quit taking hits in our trades. It would be great if we could get this guy to just look great in pre-season and up his value a little.

I just went to three different sites. One says that he has an early termination option, which is always a player option, and the other two show him having a player option. So unless you can direct me to a site that differs from that, I don't believe its a team option.

I maybe on the conservative side, it's in my nature.(Im a pennypincher) But, we have $42.250M committed to 10 players, assuming we don't sign or keep Brockman past this year. That's without extending Sergio and making him the QO. My guess on this yrs salary cap has been $57.3M so I wasn't far off. The league FO said in a memo that the Cap could fall again next yr. to the $51M - $53M range. I was using the $53M estimate in my prior post along with Sergio getting a extention that starts in the $4M range. Add to that a top 10 draft choice somewhere in the $2.4M to $3M range.

So, I was basing my projections on $43M + $1.5M for Sergio + $3M for 1st rounder and a reduction of the Cap to $53M. That's $5.5M in Cap Space with only 11 players on the roster. Fill in 3 more players to fill the roster to 14 and the Cap is less than $5M.

But, if the cap drops less and we don't extend Sergio, than at least for that year we could have between $6.5 and $10M. But, delaying signing Sergio, would just cause a bigger drain the following year when Spencer is up for an extension.

I just think that for planning purposes the $5M target over the next 2 yrs is a accurate number.
 
Am I the only 1 who thinks this is a bad deal for New York??? Chandler is the best player in the trade, they give up a 1st rounder, and they take back longer contracts with the exception of KT. Not sure if either team does this.

Ok my mistake but in Hoophype it says his contract is up in 2011 not 2012. Where did you find his contract lasting longer then 2011?

I think where were getting mixed up with one another is how the seasons are referred to. so we both may be saying the same thing, just differently. He is signed thru the 2009/2010 season. He has a ETO, or Player option which he will probably exercise for the 2010/2011 season. Therefore he has no contract for the 2011/2012 season. If thats what your saying, then I agree with you...
 
Yes so both of Curry's contact and Jeffries end at the same and shed enough cap to we play a big part in FA market in 2011.

This is what our cap space will look like at time after the trades 35,995,510 and that is picking up options of JT, Hawes, Greene, Evans and Casspi. Assuming that the Cap probably be around 55 we would then have about 19 million in cap space it will go lower say maybe to 15 million with the 2010 pick. Now tell me that is not a good trade for us. Also we could lower it further by renouncing the rights to Chandler(I think it would be stupid he is a player for sure) and Greene saving another 5 million in cap.

In 2011 this would be our roster. This is even before we sign a FA.
