Mixture of ideas

This is largely a blend of several ideas/themes that have been discussed, but I don't believe this mixture as been presented. It makes for a very busy draft night, if the homework/preperation has been done ahead of time. I am sure that some will think that I'm willing to pay too high a price but it usually requires giving in order to get.

Trade one is between Minnesota and Sacramento.

Minnesota sends:

PG Mike James ~ 5.6 million and has player option in 2009/2010 @ ~ 6.5 million
SG Ricky Davis ~ 6.8 million and is an expiring
Pick #7

Sacramento Sends:
PG Mike Bibby 13.5 million w/ETO option and 14.5 million for 2008/2009
SG Quincy Douby 1.3 million on rookie contract with qualifing offer set for 2010/2011
Top five protected 2008 1st

With the seventh pick the Kings hopefully will have the choice between both Yi Jianlian and Spencer Hawes

Trade two is between Detroit and the Kings. I believe nBrans suggested exchanging the Kings 10 pick with Detriots 15th and 27th (he included their second round also but that might be pushing just a little)

This should allow the Kings to choose between bigs such as Jason Smith, Josh McRoberts and Tiago Splitter. The Kings would be able to get the BAP with the 27th which would most likely be a SG/SF player. In exchange the Pistons would have a more likely chance to get Acie Law as their replacement PG.

If this didn't go thru, the only likely difference could be not having the opportunity to pick the BAP with the 27 pick. This could change if one of the desirable bigs fell to the tenth.

Trade three is between the Knicks and the Kings. This one has been much talked about.

Kincks send:
PG Steve Francis @ 16.4 million this year and 17.1 million for 2008/2009
C/PF Channing Frye on rookie contract with qualifying offer due 2009/2010
Pick #23

Kings send:
SF Ron Artest
PF Kenny Thomas

The Kings could possibly use the 23rd pick on Marcus Williams.

Note: even with Francis's contract being a year shorter, it is more expensive in total dollars.

Resign Ronny Price and Justin Williams to reasonable contracts and take the rest of the summer off other than actually using summer league and training camp to get the team to play as a unit and settle on rotations.

The net result for the Kings could be:

PG Mike James, Ronny Price, Steve Francis
SG Kevin Martin, Ricky Davis, Marcus Williams
SF Francisco Garcia, John Salmon, #27 (SF/SG combo?)
PF Yi Jianlian, SAR, Justin Williams
C Brad Miller, Tiago Splitter, Channing Frye

I think this could be a succesful start and if after the all star break they were fighting for the eigth spot as a team on the rise rather than delaying the collapse it could be considered a success.

Since I mistakenly posted before I was done typing I left off a lot of my reasoning why the teams would agree to the terms both the good and bad points. But I do need to at least explain why the Bibby factor, his ETO, shouldn't be a hinderance. I believe in one of the article in the Bee last year, his agent indicated that their intention was for Bibby to opt out this summer. His less than stellar performance most likely changed that. With him most likely looking at this year as an opportunity to reclaim some of his market value, it would be in his interest to be in a situation that would most likely highlight his strengths without unduly displaying his weaknesses.

On the assumption that Minnesota would like to take one more run with Garnett, Bibby could be the perfect pick and roll partner. That is his strength. At the same time, with Garnett behind him, a lot of his shortcomings on defense could be masked. Minnesota even thou they came up short last year, will still get media attention with Garnett on the team. A most likely win-win situation for him. As the Kings are currently constructed, neither of those factors work to his benefit by remaining on the team. Minnesota is one location I could see him waiving his ETO early in order to get there. This of course is IMHO.
