Mayor Kevin Johnson on KHTK

Mayor Kevin Johnson was interviewed by Grant Napear on KHTK.

Below are some notes I took (not necessarily direct quotes but some paraphrasing).

Please feel free to correct any information below as I typed as quickly as I could and didn't have my editor with me (thanks for the help last night Capt!).

Also, GN wanted to shoot down any rumors that naysayers believe and spread as their truth. GN said ARCO Arena cannot be renovated and if the Kings move then ARCO Arena will not exist as there will be no one who will want to buy the arena as well as run and maintain it, especially with no anchor tenant. The arena is obsolete and the land will be worth more with no arena. Finally, GN said this is headed to only a vote by the city council and will not go to the public to vote on.

KJ said...

It's a new day at City Hall. This is about a united front...about how much this franchise means to our community.

Maloofs told KJ they want to stay in Sacramento.

We had a HUGE win last night. We don't vote 9-0 too often.

This is our best shot to get it done today (on Taylor-ICON). It's a dream team that has been assembled and the best team to make this happen.

KJ wants public to call in talk radio, go to Kings games, write letters and KJ would like to hold a community forum on what are the most pressing issues on the arena issue.

9-0 vote on a controversial topic. The council is speaking as one voice.

Loss of Kings/arena would be devastating (used Seattle as example). Kings employ 1,000, pay property and sales taxes.

Marketing and public it is hard to rebound from losing a team. We are one of 29 cities to have an NBA team (30 teams total).

We want to respect tax payers.

If MSE files on March 1: At what degree does MSE want to participate? KJ needs MSE to not file to show to public they do want to stay like they have said all along. How do we finance it? What are the roles we all play in a down economy (MSE, Taylor, public)?
Arena is number 1 topic from public and public tells KJ to keep the Kings and build a new arena.

KJ wants to hold community forums in the next 90 days. He wants to hear what matters to the public. It's about economy development, create jobs, etc.

It's about civic pride and wanting the best for our community.

Taylor-ICON believes downtown is best place but will use 90 days to look other areas but KJ believes it will be in downtown.

How we pay for it is biggest obstacle.

We have found a location and a development team that is best for this.

They want to find out how much each group will pay and what the gap will be and how to pay for that.

Here We Stay was brought up.

NO Hornets were brought up with their attendance target. Mayor, Gov and elected officials all got together to make this happen.

There will be constant communication between city council and Taylor-ICON group. KJ will contact MSE to help get the ball rolling.

KJ's vision for Sacramento: It's about culture and quality of life for future of Sacramento. Believes Sacramento can support two sports teams in the future.

We can't control the NBA deadline or MSE, but we can control what we do to get the work done.

If this is true, I am confident we will get an arena. The council wants this to happen - that much is clear. If Taylor/ICON can bring forward a proposal that can be funded without going to the voters, it will happen. The council will vote 9-0 again. :) :) :)

I REALLY want to believe in the ICON plan...but am prepared for another letdown...BUT, never before has ANY Sac City Council voted unanimously on ANYTHING regarding the Kings...even the loan to Jim Thomas back in the 90's, and that was with a popular mayor in Serna too. So I do think the unanimous support from the entire council will show everyone, including MSE, that at least the city is 'all in' and on the same page...for the first time ever. The next 90 days will be veeeeerrrryy interesting!

:)

I want this so bad, and always have...I want to be able to take my 2 sons to Kings games, and to grow up with them in their lives, much like I did starting in 1985 when I was only 10. My boys are 6 yrs and 8 months, and I want them to love their home town, and to experience the same thrills I've experienced the past 26 years the Kings have been here. Sacramento has so much potential, and it all starts downtown and it all happens with our Kings!

I love reading what you wrote. Mayor Kevin Johnson wants to hold some community forums on the arena issue. He wants to hear more from the public.

This is an opportunity to let your voice be heard. If these community forums take place, I hope that you will attend, bring your children and say exactly what you just wrote.

I have attended some of these meetings at City Hall and I get there a little too late to sign in so that I can speak before the council.

However, wearing my Kings jersey spoke so loudly for me without even saying a word that Council Member Angelique Ashby mentioned me by how proud she was seeing someone from the public attend these meetings while displaying their civic pride by wearing a Kings jersey.

I think that is the best shot. But what kind of public support can be used that doesn't involve a public vote? Property exchanges I think are part of that. Any of those taxes like the TOT, food and beverage, parking, etc... need a vote? There will be no general tax hike attempt for sure.

Here's a rumor killer...for now.

FOX 40's Jim Crandell reported earlier tonight on the rumors of the Maloofs filing for relocation by the March 1st deadline with the NBA, "I was told there has been no talk of filing those papers."

The video of the report can be seen below.

I will continue to remain positive and keep hope alive.

That's the kind of rumors I like hearing. Thanks for all your work, Mike, in keeping us updated. Looking forward to seeing what Taylor/ICON can pull off.

It is my pleasure to keep the positive vibe going strong.

I won't let the same four or five naysayers from the Bee get me down. They're miserable people although I know their intentions are good but they're so uneducated when it comes to this arena issue.

This song is what I have in mind to combat the naysayers to keep us together, to remain strong, stay positive and to always believe in our struggle to build a new arena and keep the Kings here, is also the song Marcos Breton of the Bee suggested about Sacramento. It's "I Won't Back Down" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (with a cameo from Ringo Starr of the Beatles as their drummer).

"Well I won't back down
No I won't back down
You can stand me up at the gates of hell
But I won't back down

No I'll stand my ground, won't be turned around
And I'll keep this world from draggin me down
gonna stand my ground
... and I won't back down"

My first boyhood memories of sports were sitting on my great aunts back porch, in the summer in St. Louis, with my grouchy great uncle Ed, and listening to the voice of Harry Carey over the radio describing the Cardinals game. Stan Musial became my boyhood hero, and I lived and died with my Card's. They were a big a part of my life, and remain to this day, some of my best memories. I doubt I would be the same person without that experience. To be able to vicariously experience both victory and defeat, and learn how to grow from both at a young age is irreplacable. I certainly hope every young person in Sacramento is lucky enough to have a team to grow up with.

I would love to attend these meetings, but its one hell of a drive from Ensenada. Great job Mike and Capt. Hope to see you at the next get together for a Clips game Mike. Still waiting for those videos....:D

Actually there is a lot more financing options that don't take a public vote, than do. Almost any actual tax for a specific purpose is very hard to get in California.

Hotel, food and beverage, rental car all don't need a public vote. Also, the city has money for specific purposes they can use. Donation of land (which could be in the form of a 99-year lease for some minimum annual payment) doesn't need a public vote. Waiver of city permit/inspection fees and/or a guarantee of expedited processing of city paperwork don't take a public vote (that can add up to a lot of dollars). One appeal of the rail yards, is that is is a designated redevelopment area, so there is a lot of redevelopment funds that could be used. A commitment of redevelopment funds to a project does not need a public vote. I'm sure there are even more possibilites of which I'm not aware.

The truth is cities, counties, the state and federal government all give big subsidies to private businesses all the time. My agency, for example and the one I worked for for 17 years. I've pointed out before that the Hyatt Regency, Embassy Suites and the Sheraton all got public subsidies. That new Dive Bar on K street and its next door neighbors all got public subsidies. The list is endless.

I don't think people think of that. Actually, anyone who owns a home is getting a very large public subsidy is the form of the mortgage interest tax deduction (if they take it). FHA loans are a form of public subsidy for a homebuyer.

Does Prop 26 challenge their ability to enact these taxes without going to the voters?

I don't know enough about Prop 26. But you really don't want the countless decisions that a representative body has to make to go to the voters everytime.

The ballots would be hundreds of pages long and it would be massively expensive. There's a reason we have representative government. You can't have millions of people voting on every little monetary thing the government does. If people don't like it, then they need to go vote for someone else. For that matter, more Americans need to get out and vote period. Our voting percentages are an incredibly poor example to the world of democracy in action. We don't have to worry about dodging bullets to vote.

The truth is, all these actions are public. An agenda goes out that any voter can obtain and they have to right to voice their opinions on any and all issues, for or against. Most people just don't bother to follow these things. Most of the items on agendas are pretty boring. But to claim that decisions are being made without citizen input is just silly. I've pointed out that anyone can make a comment on city council agendas and other public agendas through an eComment link next to the agenda. All comments submitted that way are made part of the public record of the meeting.
