Mayor Johnson feels good after NBA meeting in Sac today

I got a good feeling about this.. Can anyone say Oakland A's in town within the next 10 years if this whole "riverwalk" thing takes off?

I think the A's are still poised to move to San Jose as soon as the Giants give up their objection to the move as well as their territorial claim to Santa Clara. Although with yesterday's takeover of the Dodgers, I don't know how much power the Giants actually have to begin with. Either way, I wouldn't be a very big fan of the A's in Sac. At least, not as long as they're still owned by that cheapass Lew Wolff. He'd be more polarizing in Sac than the Maloofs are. At least the Rivercats win consistently, which you can't say for the A's. Moneyball or not.

The good thing about ball park idea is that Raley Field was built so that it could easily be upgraded to big league standards. It would be nice if there was some deal where West Sac helps Sac build an arena now and if there is the opportunity to attract the A's, Sac pitches in to get Raley Field up to specs.

False. It was planned that way, but the weather was too cold or something and it didnt cement so they could expand.

Someone posted an article about that a while back. It would cost approx. 300 million dollars to renovate (essentially rebuild) Raley Field to get to the point where it could viably live up to MLB standards. (Of course the A's could move to Raley Field as is and call it an upgrade over the monolith that is the Coliseum.

That's mean. Shame on you. ;)

You just crushed all my hopes and dreams.....

Me too! :)

But I think something could get done with a joint venture (revenue sharing type deal) between Sac and Sac County and West Sac and Yolo County. This would be the next step after the arena gets built. Old Sac/Downtown/River Walk all would be great places to go if they were connected, and connecting all three would take a baseball team, and an Arena Downtown. It's basically fun all year round, and I can totally see something liek this working for Sacramento. Getting the A's would make me a fan (would dump the Dodgers for them :))

Blech, you live in Norcal, have the Giants and A's to pick from, and you chose the Dodgers??? If you're from LA, then understandable -- but you seem to ready to drop them that it doesn't seem so. Life long Giants fan here, just so you know where the disgust is coming from. :p

I remember right before it was built part of the the great thing was that it could be upgraded to a MLB park if needed. Then I remember a couple years ago hearing something vague about how that didn't happen. So it came down to laying cement in too cold of weather?? Jesus Christ. That's a $300 mil planning error isn't it?

Too cold????? Oh, dear.

Started being a fan of Sports in the early 80s when the Bengals went up against the 49ers in the Super Bowl (the first one in 1980-81). I HAD to go against my dad of course being a 6 year old at the time soooooo.. Then I started rooting for the Dodgers against the Giants during the Fernando, and Orel Hershiser days. Not as much into baseball as I am into Basketball though.. So I figure it would be easy to get behind a local team.

Since the Cats came I had been following the players to the Majors so it makes sense that if the A's came I would be a fan.

Chris Webber and Verne Troyer (Mini Me, for those who didn't recognize the name) having an exchange on twitter. Turns out Troyer is supporting the cause and that Webb wearing purple is in fact not some sort of divine coincidence. Also sporting purple:

Saw that. Isn't social media amazing? That something started by a group to people can spread over an entire city and then reach to everyone all throughout the globe? And can I say how much I love Chris Webber? The King of Kings! :D

They better make it a duel purpose stadium for football too !

Might want to see if any MLS teams need a place to play while we're at it.

Well the new MLS franchises, Por and Van, are getting 18-20K per game. Can Sac do the same? San Jose is one of the lowest attended MLS teams, and could reflect poorly on NorCal. I'd drive up for games though.

I'd pay good money for the chance to jeer Landon Donovan. Stupid Laker fan.

I do think potentially 5-10 years down the road, MLS is more likely in Sac than MLB or NFL, as much as the anti-futbol crowd here would like to admit. Sac already had its chance to get the raiders and blew it.

If you've ever been to a live NHL or even minor league hockey like they have in Stockton you're hooked forever - even if you were not a hockey fan to begin with. I've watched dozens of MLB games, only about 6 or 7 NFL regular or pre-season games, probably about a hundred NBA games - but nothing compares to dozen or so LIVE hockey games I've witnessed. Stockton has something going - it's nuts inside there and almost as exciting as a game on the ice at San Jose Shark Tank.

While we're at it, we can build a PGA Championship level course on the river and replace Augusta.

And also, who's up for some professional Lacrosse?

Hold on, in all of this noise, we're missing the big fish here: Lingerie Football.

Women's
Lingerie Football, just to be clear.

Serious note: soccer in Sacramento would be epic.

I absolutely love Lacrosse. Get it done Sacto!

Look at the enthusiasm in the city just at the prospect of getting the arena built.

I've never been more proud of my hometown than I am now.

Agreed. I grew up in Sac playing soccer for 14 years. One guy to help do that would be a high school teammate of mine and MLS player of 12 years, Sasha Victorine. Best soccer player to ever come out of Sacramento.

Think Sac is a PERFECT soccer town. MLS up here in seattle is bigger than the Sonics were, and after three years. They sell out a portion of Qwest field... by far the most attendance in all of MLS like 35k a game. And tickets are not cheap.

My feeling is Sac wouldn't be quite that big on soccer, mostly due to the venue advantage here in Seattle, but it would be big. Very big. Just about every kid, boy OR girl, plays soccer in Sacramento.

This. Sacramento, as strange as it would seem, has quite the soccer culture.
