Mavericks Sign Kevin Willis to A 10-Day Contract

DALLAS-The Dallas Mavericks announced today that they have signed free agent center Kevin Willis to a 10-Day contract. As per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Willis (7-0, 245) has played 20 seasons in the NBA, but has been inactive since he completed the 2004-05 season with the Atlanta Hawks. Born on Sept. 6, 1962, Willis becomes the oldest Maverick in franchise history and the second oldest player in NBA history.
Originally drafted out of Michigan State by the Atlanta Hawks in 1984, Willis leads all active players in games played (1,419 regular season games). He was named All-NBA Third Team in 1992 and was an Eastern Conference All-Star that same year. Willis holds career averages of 12.2 points on 48.7% shooting and 8.4 rebounds in 27.0 minutes per game.
Willis was in Phoenix today for his first practice as a Maverick and will accompany the team to Sacramento for the Mavericks matchup with the Kings on April 3.

against miller... more like 25/25 with 10 blks.... all in the 1st half...

Well, day-um.

If they can sign Willis, I don't see any reason we shouldn't just pick up the phone and give Vlade a call.

:D

Dampier...but he'll be back shortly, so a 10-day contract was all that was needed.

EDIT: Obviously, Dampier's fine...

Why?

I don't follow the Mavs closely. Are they trying to rest their big men going into the PO? Is someone injured?

I think the signing is to see if Willis belongs on the playoff roster as the Mavs want three true Cs on that roster. Their third string center, DJ Mbenga (I think), is out for the rest of the season with an injury.

Finding a legit Center at the end of the season is a near impossible task and unfortunatly the Maves injuries are forcing them to do the impossible... find a guy who can take 10-30 min of time at the 5 during the end of the season to hold on to the #1 seed and possibly even take part in post season play. Bottomline is that when you scrape the botom of the barrel you are going to get splinters under your nails.

I thought it was past the deadline for the playoff roster March 12 when Hart got traded.

anyone not on a roster any time previously during the season may be picked up at almost any time and added to the PO roster, i.e. Tim Hardaway and the pacers a couple years ago.
