Rap entrepreneur has spot in summer league

Everyone doesn't know Percy Miller, who'll be playing with the Kings' entry in the Las Vegas summer league. But quite a few people know him as Master P, the rapper/producer/entrepreneur who has made millions in the recording industry.

Just what Miller's relationship is with the Maloof ownership group that has gone into the recording business is unknown. But Miller, 34, who for years has been trying to get into the NBA, is getting a chance with another team. Miller has played with the Toronto Raptors and the then-Charlotte Hornets, in summer league or training camp.

Miller said he will be in Sacramento on July 5 with the Kings as they gather to work out before heading to Las Vegas. http://ads.sacbee.com/RealMedia/ads/adstream_lx.ads/www.sacbee.com/content/sports/1459912395/Button20/Sacbee/gdt_300_freestuff_jan_4/gdt_300x250_free.html/34353462356138373432343435313130?_RM_EMPTY_ "I played last year in the (American Basketball Association2000) with the Utah Snow Bears," Miller said.

Miller said he's played in the Continental Basketball Association with the Fort Wayne Fury and the International Basketball League with the San Diego Sting Rays.

"I feel I've reserved my legs over the years, and I've just been learning the game," said Miller, who recently released a new CD "Ghetto Bill." One thing (Kings vice president of basketball operations) Wayne Cooper knows is that I'm not in it for the money, and he knows how strong I've been striving for it."

Miller said he injured himself while playing at the University of Houston and turned to music.

Now he's returning to hoops and will be paired with Hall of Fame coach Pete Carril, who is supposed to work with the summer-league team.

That makes two Master P's in the house.

Miller, a 6-4, 220-pound shooting guard, has two 6-7 guards in 2004 first-round choice Kevin Martin and 2005 first-round choice Francisco García playing in front of him - and playing a lot. Other players expected to be on Sacramento's summer-league roster for the first day of workouts include Erik Daniels; 6-2 guard Ronnie Price from Utah Valley State; 7-foot, 270-pound center Marcus Campbell from Mississippi State; Patrick Okafor, 6-8, 250 pounds from Houston, the older brother of Charlotte Rookie of the Year Emeka; and Pacific's 6-9, 250-pound Guillaume Yango.

Marcus Campbell is absolutely huge. 7'1" with a "wingspan" of 7'6" and a standing reach of 9'6"!!!!!

Not much talent but if he lost some weight maybe he can turn into something.

I found these scouting reports from a variety of websites on a few of the guys on the Kings' summer league team. Who knows? Remember that Mo Evans was a summer league guy.

Marcus Campbell: 7'0'', 270 lbs., center (Mississippi State):
Scouting Report: Left-handed space-eater, not the most mobile pivot player, but he does have big upside ... Has nice touch around the rim ... Works off the left block, faces, and drives for the running left hook ... Goes to the middle every time on offense ... Looks lost sometimes when he is not involved on offense ... Good footwork, poor hands on offense ... Does a solid job on the boards because he's difficult to dance around on the blocks ... Stays on the floor on defense ... Surprisingly, can't be forced into mistakes on defense, where he boasts fine instincts ... Mediocre shot-blocker at 7-0 because he lacks reaction speed ... Still short on polish but has the physical strength to make an impact.

GuillaumeYango; 6'9'', 250 lbs, PF (Pacific):
A terrific inside presence ... Has a muscular build ... Extremely athletic, a quick jumper ... Possess great boy control ... Doesn't have the most polish but his toughness and natural talent are enough to make his productive ... Draws fouls ... Plays within himself ... Needs to improve his ball-handling ... Is improving constantly ... Averaged 10.2 points and 5.8 rebounds as a junior ... Had the fifth best single season field goal percentage (.580) in Pacific history ... Over the last seven games of the season, averaged 17.4 points and 6.7 rebounds per game ... A transfer from JUCO powerhouse College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls, Idaho ... Posted 17.0 points and 15.0 rebounds per game on a 24-6 team as a sophomore ... Attended Les Arcades High School in Dijon, France ... Les Arcades went 24-6 overall during his senior season ... Scored a career high 38 points and hauled in 16 rebounds against Besangon in 1999 ... Helped Les Arcades win the French Championship in 1998.

Ronnie Price: 6'2'', 190 lbs., guard (Utah Valley State):
Named NCAA Division I Independents Player of the Year as a senior. Also earned USBWA All-District 8 honors. Named All-Independent as a junior. Started collegiate career as a walk-on at Nicholls State, where he played one season before transferring to Utah Valley State. Utah Valley State was a junior college his sophomore year so he was eligible to play immediately, and he made the decision to stay at the school as they transitioned to NCAA Division I status.
Senior (2004-05): Would have ranked third nationally in scoring (24.3 ppg) if it were not for Utah Valley State’s status as a provisional Division I member. Led team in scoring every game but five. Surpassed the 30-point mark eight times, with a season-high 36 points vs. Northern Colorado. Recorded 35 points against Oral Roberts, Montana State and at UMKC. Registered 34 points, eight rebounds and seven assists vs. Boise State. Tallied 24 points at Nebraska. Hit six three-point field goals on four different occasions. Helped UVSC to a 16-12 record in their first full year of Division I competition.
Strongly built and athletic point who can score in a variety of ways while making others better. Strong defender who is always around the ball.

Patrick Okafor: 6'8'', 250 lbs., PF (Houston):
Incredibly strong low post player with good hands. Overpowers players on the low block and has crafty low post moves. A passionate player who is an excellent rebounder and has shown improvement from year to year. Made a strong showing as a CBA rookie averaging 10.9 points per game, 6.4 rebounds in 22 minutes per game after being a first team all star in the USBL. In addition he shot 57% from the field in the CBA, which was fifth best in the league and he is a good free throw shooter (77%)

apparently T.O wants to join our summer league team. I would love to see what he can do on a basketball court just for fun. Heard him and McNabb(played some ball at Syracuse) are both pretty good and used to go at it on the hardwood.

Who do you think Owens would most ressemble(his game, attitude, moves etc...) if he would be good enough to be in the NBA? good shotblocker? good rebounder? highlight film dunker?

I say he would be a poor man's 'Sheed

anyone?

artest......

The darkside of having Vegas owners -- you get cheap n' chintzy garbage like aging football players and rappers showing up on your summer league teams, apparently because the Maloof's respect the size of their bling.

rappers want to be ballers and ballers want to be rappers.... what a weird world we live in

agreed.

I do think are wasting two roster slots by inviting both TO and P to the league...

On the flipside it will be entertaining and will draw people to come and watch...I mean if I were in Vegas I'd go

Ain't that the truth.

There are about a dozen talented guys who were surprised and shocked not to see their names get called in the draft and instead of trying to find one of them (which would save money, over some barely-hanging-on vet) we're bringing in Master P (5 years late on that idea) and Terrell Owens (yawn) instead of some real players.

Let's give these guys serious consideration....

We need size and strength down low.

Edit - sorry - should have kept the other PF in there as well. Don't think we really need to look at another rookie G.

Obviously, bringing in Master P is something of a stunt on the Maloof's part, but he is VERY serious about basketball. There's always some older guy on these teams who's bounced around the smaller leagues, this year his name happens to be Percy Miller. I don't see anything wrong with it.

Why is everybody so jacked up about the stinkin summer leagues. IT's only a summer league for god sake.

^^^Welcome to the board. And by the way, VF21 should be very proud of your name "VF-21"..... Lol.

How will we know who the real VF is??

::recalls an episode of Inspector Gadget, where a super impostor makes himself up to look like the whacky inspector only to be foiled at the last moment by Brains the dog...phew::
