Martin now NBA's 2nd leading scorer! (title updated)

It will be interesting to see what happens as the main guys start to come back. It will take some of the load off of Martin, who's been expending a lot of energy trying to be more than just a novelty and keeping the Kings in the game. It will also quite possibly disturb the flow of his and the other swing player's games.

What I liked most in the TWolves game was when Martin missed a wide open 3 in the 4th, probably coming up short based on fatigue factor, but he immediately realized it and went straight for his own rebound, getting the Kings another possession and eventually free throws for him. That is the sort of thing that can separate him from my memories of Peja as just being a pure/shooter scorer who fades away.

I would really love him to make every free throw. If he did that in the Twolves game he'd have scored 34, which depending on Kobe could make him the Top scorer :O! He shouldn't miss more than 2 a game, which at this rate would give us a sure 13-15 pts already. He needs to work on his shooting though, his FG% isn't very high at the moment. Then he'll be unstoppable.

If Kevin could keep his averages at 27 ppg, 4.5 boards, and 2.5 steals, he will have officially hit star status. Then all of a sudden, he's a complete bargain at 11 million per year.

I hope he can keep it up!
Exactly my point in the NBA forum thread, your FO is very wise to lock him longterm las summer, KM has shown superstar number early on this season, atleast offensively.

i will guarantee if Kevin continue's to be in the top 5 in scoring by the all-star break he wont just BE in the All-Star game, he will START

Not the way that works. Starters are voted in. There's Nash, there's Kobe, there's TMac (with all of China behind him), there's Iverson....there is no chance to start by being voted in. And given Deron Williams, Chris Paul, Baron Davis, Tony Parker etc., it'll be hard to even make it on the team sans injuries. If Kobe is traded will free things up a bit, but the lack of winning makes it hard.

Oh yeah, I can see him starting ahead of Nash, Kobe, Iverson and McGrady! ;)

All-Star is a popularity contest and the votes will go to proven All-Stars I just named. There is no way Martin will be voted into starting line up by the fans. If he continues putting up these sort of numbers he might be selected by the coaches but thats the best case scenario.

kevin martin

right now he's 2nd behind kobe in ppg. 28ppg for kevin martin right now. he gets to the line so much. is it a result of being so quick and aggressive? i dont even think kobe gets to the line as much as martin, but yet kobe is still the best in the business? how good is martins potential?

Around the NBA teams/scouts are saying that when Martin slashes across the lane he leans very subtly into the defender just as he feels his man to draw an extraordinary number of fouls. He sometimes does it on the perimeter on longer FG attempts by jumping into the defender, but not as subtle. His quickness and fakes are world class!

every team has to respect his ability to drive but also respect his ability to shoot a very high percentage. Which is why he draws so many fouls or get so many quality looks at the basket. Defenders are going to mess up somewhere in their coverage of him and he usually exploits that.

Hes getting better and better every game too

All year last year, I heard many around here say that while Kmart is good, he will never amount to a true first option on a good team. Many people seem(ed) to think that he would be just a good second option.

I wonder how many people have changed their minds?

I have haha

Amazing how he's been tearing it up considering there's nobody else on the team to really take the pressure off of him. He'll probably tire out though, unless he gets reduced minutes with the return of Ron Ron.

Would be nice if he tries to improve other aspects of his game too though. Besides points he isnt really a stat sheet filler

Martin uses his height to finish around the rim. He doesn't dunk with authority like Lebron. His layups are layins i.e. he shoots over the top rather than scoops under. He reminds me of how Iverson create angle shots. Martin's angle shots are hard to stop so I don't see him changing his technique or expanding. He'll just probably improve on his ballhandling. He'll probably be a good scorer for a long time but he'll never be the type to take over a game and break down double and triple teams unless he adds a quicker release, post game, and footwork. He also needs to dribble lower and use shamgod variations like Lebron on smaller guards. He also needs to change his posture like Tracy McGrady if he wants to slash because his cuts aren't sharp enough and doesn't seal out his man, he's just relying on pure quickness for the moment. His potential is good but he'll need a lot of direction in his development. For now he should observe John Salmons' dribbling techniques. In the end if he doesn't develop these then more than likely he'll turn into a Richard Hamilton type player especially later in his career when he isn't as quick.
