Maloofs To Lobby NBA In Sacramento

Hey Maloofs,

Stay out of OUR BUSINESS..

Who wants to go to the airport with me and throw tomatoes at him when he arrives?

Now there's a mature approach. I'm sure that will convince them to stay. Just curious Gary. Who owns the Kings? If its the Maloof's, then I think its their business as well. Considering that they own the damm business.

If people believed that the Maloofs financial empire was collapsing because of the Kings being trapped in Sacramento I believe even some Sacramentans would have sympathy. The problem is that rightly or wrongly the perception is they've gone belly up because of the Palms and that is driving this move. That and the fact that they aren't playing straight with us. Personally I was very sympathetic up until this reached the point of no return.

Personally I have no sympathy for the Maloof's. Whatever problems they have, whether self made or not, are their problems. I'm certainly not going to sit around and talk about how they got where they are financially, because I don't care, and it doesn't change anything. I'm only interested in keeping the Kings in sacramento. It appears that only a new arena will accomplish that. Therefore, I'm only interested in how to get a new arena for sacramento. If the Maloof's benefit from that, then so be it. All I know is that the fans will benefit. The city of sacramento will benefit. And anything else, like going to the airport to throw tomatoes at the Maloof's is just childish nonsense.

This is about getting a deal done, and anything that helps get it done is what I'm all about.

Seriously??? SERIOUSLY??? First of all it was a joke, and second of all "LOL".

I could totally see myself as a 36 year old man going to the airport to throw tomatoes.. Maybe I will put on some old rags from the middle-ages and bring a stockade or something while speaking in a real bad British accent. (sorry keep editing this to add more Monty Python humor)

Oh and I don't care if it's their business. It matters more to Sac than it does to them *wink wink*

"For the first time publicly, one of the owners of the Sacramento Kings addressed the possibility of a franchise move to Anaheim. Joe Maloof was not too thrilled at the city of Sacramento’s letter telling Anaheim to cease its negotiations to bring the Kings to Southern California. 'It’s not for the mayor or anybody (in the City of Sacramento) to interfere with our business. That’s what I think they’re doing, and it’s not right,' Maloof told The Orange County Register. 'We would appreciate that they not interfere with our business.' Sacramento issued a loan worth $70 million to the Kings back in 1997. And if the Kings leave, there is a uncertainty floating around city hall that the Kings might not repay their debt. "

It was a joke. A humorous tit-for-tat as it were.

Yah it's not funny if I have to explain it.. But for Bajaden I will.

The "stay out of our business" part was in regards to the quote above (which I thought we were all in the know about anyway and wouldn't have to quote it in my post)

The throw tomatoes at the airport thing was a take on the whole "meet KJ at the airport and cheer for him" thing..

Got it?

I'll be at the airport tonight, as I am flying into sacto from JFK. I would be willing to hold one side of the tomato launcher if you can find a third to hold the other side (you would be the one loading and pulling it back, of course.)

Most people loved the Maloofs until they wanted to move the team. So you can keep you self rightious speaches. The Maloofs have made a lot errors and now the Kings are in jeapordy in Sac. Yes we don't have an arena yet but the fans have supported this team as well as anywhere. If the Maloofs were better at comunication and selling the new arena things might be different. But I think a lot of people percieve them as demanding and spoiled. That can all change. Just step up to the plate and work together!

Look, I understand where your coming from. But just how does anything you just said matter? What does it accomplish? Did the Maloof's make mistakes in the process of trying to get a new arena? Yes! No relevation there. So did the city of sacramento. No relevation there. Now what did that just accomplish? Nothing. The past doesn't matter, other than to understand how we got where we are. But the past isn't going to solve the problem, if we don't learn from it.

Obviously when the last arena deal fell through, they decided they'd had enough. I'm sure their finances played a large part in that decison. Now you can blame them for being in the financial situation they're in, but after your done blaming them, the situation will be exactly the same. What we need is way to convince them, that its in their best interest to stay in sacramento. I'd like to convince them to sell the team to Burkle, but apparently thats out of the question. So whether we like it or not, they still own the team, and therefore, we still have to deal with them.

I'm sure your right about a lot of people's perception. But perception is seldom reality. I've met the Maloof's a few times, the last time at summer league. They've always been very nice and willing to talk to just about everybody. But I'm not about to say I really know them. Hell, I'm still trying to figure out my wife, and I live with her every day. All we know is superficial. I do know they seem to treat their employee's well. At least the one's that I've spoken to. Personally, I don't care if they're related to Gengis Khan, as long as we can convince them to give the city one more try. Now if we have to get them down on the ground and twist their arm behind their back, then I'm down with that. But I think it would be more beneficial if they came willingly. I don't think they're bad people. They've spent millions of dollars on charities in sacramento. Right now I think they're fighting for survival, and when that happens, it can get ugly.

Sorry, I didn't make the connection. Too many cervesa's I guess. But then I'm slow on the uptake. Trust me, though, there will be people that will take the tomatoes part seriously.

Part of why we loved them, is they said they wouldn't move the team. So obviously we're gonna make "self righteous speeches" once we find out that was a lie.

Not wise for them to go to Sacramento at all... or if some people bring some cowbells and give them a headache.... a serenade of cowbells perfect along with jetlag

I think people need to be a little careful here. There is still a decent chance the Kings could end up staying in Sacramento next year, with the Maloofs as owners. Anything that makles such a scenario unlikely/less palatable is not in the interests of keeping the Kings. The Maloofs are the enemy now, but you don't want to add "we're so loathed nobody will buy tickets next year" to the list of reasons they can give why they have to move. And you certainly don't want to poison things so much that they come back provisionally, and then nobody goes to the games so that they get to do this whole thing next year with the league's worst attendance figures to back them up. They are the enemy, but you can't entirely destroy that relationship without potentially destroying your hopes of keeping the franchise. When this is over, if the Kings do stay, everybody has to be able to at least pretend to be able to kiss and make up.

Think he was referring to Bennett.

Good points, but if there was some kind of attendance thing set up where if we make the attendance goal the team stays that would be one of the best sceanrios in my opinion. I'm thinking people would be a little more motivated to buy tickets.... especially if the team is competitive which it is looking to be. There will be a mutual feeling between the team and the fans that they're literally playing for their life. (or rooting for their life). It'll give a lot more significance to buying a ticket. Now hopefully the maloofs don't go all nuts crazy and intentionally make themselves so unpopular that people can't stand giving them money...

All that said, I don't think it comes down to attendance. In order I think it's this:

1. arena
2. corp. sponsorship cash
3. attendance
4. tv deal

I just think if your really dedicating to staying you find a way to make it work. Keep trying. I do appreciate some things about the Maloofs. I think the Kings games are very entertaining. The dancers and all the activities you don't see on TV are a lot of fun. I think Slamson is a great mascot. I think the fans will forgive the Maloofs for trying to move also. Just come back and work it out.

the Maloofs are not the enemy. Not having a suitable venue is the enemy. They are simply reacting to that enemy. We should do the same and find a way to destroy that enemy and one day thank God that we now not only have the Kings, but can once and for all delete this section in the forum. :)

Yes they are! They've ignored Kevin Johnson, they've sabotaged past arena efforts, and they've been working behind the scenes to move this team for sometime, probably even before the land swap deal came apart. They most certainly are public enemy number one in my book.

One other thing that burns me. I don't recall where, but I read somewhere that Stern said something about the lack of maintainence at Arco. If that's the case, that reflects on the Maloofs and the NBA for allowing it to deteriorate to that point in the first place. i'm tired of the city getting all the blame for everything.
