My view as a season ticket holder for 21 years is way different. If they came out at the begining of the season and said we need an arena deal by march 1st in place or we will file and look at our options then fine. To work in the background on a deal and then extend the deadline is more upsetting. To me the only reason they dont come out and say it is they are worried they will lose ticket sales this year. And I'm feeling more and more like they wanted the extension for the same reason. This to me is crapping on the the people who have supported the team for 26 years. If your going to move then make the dam decison and get it over with. What they are doing to the fans and the city right now is wrong. And it makes them look like greedy bastards. The only reason I havent asked for my money back is the slim hope that the anaheim deal falls through. I think with the over $225,000k spent on the team over the 21 years deserves better treatment, no matter what they think of the city. I thought they put their customers first.
Actually, rather than looking greedy, I don't see a move to Anaheim as exactly an ideal move. It smacks more of desperation to me.
Let's say that talks with Anaheim heated up and they announced their intent to leave early in the season. How would your feelings toward the Maloofs change? Would it really have made that much difference? They wouldn't have been obligated to refund money on already sold tickets. The deal was 41 games and there still would have been 41 games. (I know, it still sucks.)
As to more or less ticket sales, I think some people wouldn't go, but I think there would be people who would go, because it would be the last chance to see them play in Sacramento, not to mention players from other teams playing in Sacramento for the last time.
I honor the commitment to the franchise you have made by being a season ticket holder for so many years and I thank all the loyal season ticket holders. You all are among the reasons that helped keep this franchise in Sacramento for all these years. It adds an extra layer of feelings of betrayal, too, I'm sure. I just think the anger and pain would have been just as great no matter when the decision was announced. I guess we'll never know, if it could have been handled in a less painful way.
I am not defending everthing the Maloofs have done. I just don't think they should bear all the blame for this. Be mad at the Maloofs, but I can't understand not being mad at the city, too. Now they are talking about a "regional"
effort for an arena and joining forces. Where was this cooperation years ago? We've had a long time to get something going and the city and region just failed miserably.
I keep reminding myself that we probably didn't think about the pain of fans in Kansas City, when Sacramento celebrated getting an NBA franchise. Eerily similar circumstances. Team doing poorly, owners sell the franchise after the 79-80 season to Sacramento owners. Low attendenace and a dismal record in 84-85 and the owners move the team to Sacramento, which we know was really Lukenbill's intent all along). I believe that move wasn't announced until after the end of the season. Maybe its karma catching up to us. *sigh*
