I was just told the Magic are trying to get Stan van Gundy to Orlando for a press conference TODAY. He has apparrently agree to a deal in principle. I was also told the Magic would prefer to answer the press today about Billy and shortly to immediately after introduce Stan as the new head coach.

My source also expect UF will not hold any press conference until after the Magic issue a prepared statement to the press which is expected to come before 2pm eastern time. If I were to guess that would put Stan here for an introduction around 4pm if they can pull it off. If not that would obviously happen tomorrow.

Like I said in my previous post, I really thought PJ would be given a shot at this job. Given the circumstances, Magic fans could thank Billy Donovan for not turning the job down. Had that happened I fully believe PJ would have been the guy Otis focused on because I do not think Stan Van Gundy would have waited and turned down a second NBA head coaching position. Luck or not we may end up with the right coach after all? Sorry that is all I can do to spin the story.

Edit - Don't hold my feet to the fire, this is just what I was told. I am sure the situation at RDV is more than a little tense at the moment. More than likely this is something attorneys are involved in trying to figure out where the escape hatch is.

I could not get through to any of my sources at the last attempt. Tells me there is a shut down at RDV on all possible information being leaked because I am not the only one that has leaked current info. The Magic are probably wanting to controll this story and how it comes out to the press. Heaven forbid they have problems with Stan Van Gundy or Stan has any reluctance to take a job that was once Billy's. Now that would really really put the Magic under the bus driven by good ole' Billy. But nothing would lead me to believe there is any further problems, except my inability to talk directly again to either of my sources.

Stay tuned, was told both sets of news will be offered up at the same time (Billy's leaving & SVG hiring), but it is now being completely handled by Otis, Bob, Alex Martins and their attorneys. Their is now a lockdown on all information coming out of RDV until the attorney's guide the Magic for their next move. Just when you thought it would end quickly, attorney's are getting involved to figure out the best solution.

I still don't know that SVG is the best fit for us but I'm concerned about the Magic. They apparently pressured Donovan for an immediate decision and wound up in a PR disaster and now they are about to do the same with SVG. I just hope we don't get in a bidding war.

Don't blame Billy for that, SVG would have been offered the Magic job before the weekend if Donovan hadn't accepted and he probably would have took it. The Magic used SVG to squeeze Billy for an immediate decision and if he is willing to go limping back to them so be it.

Again, I'm not high on SVG but he appears to be the best option of our 3 top candidates and its also clear the Kings seem to really want him but are treading carefully. It would seem to be a no brainer to choose the team that really wants you instead of the team that just used you as a pawn in their negotiations with another coach but you also have to figure that the Orlando job offers some things the Kings can't - namely the chance to win right away with a promising young lineup and not having to move his family 3000 miles across the country.

I want a guy who has actually played in the league that the players respect. In Miami the players didn't respect SVG.

People complained last year about the selection being made too quickly without due diligence towards the various coaches available. This year Petrie is doing that diligence.

While I would have welcomed SVG, there are other coaches out there that I think can do a completely acceptable job for the Kings.

Oh really? They played real real well for guys who did not respect him. You are mistaking players with "Shaq", who is an entity onto himself. The "played in the league" dynamic is an important one if you are hiring an unknown, in particular from outside the NBA unvierse. It helped sink Muss, in particular because he simply did not seem to be able to comunicate with the athletes. But the Van Gundys are very much part of the fabric of the league, mentored and hand chosen by one of the best and most respected of all time. And this particualr Van Gundy will be joining some team fresh from the fight and with a ton of success packed in his suitcase. When a guy has coached an eltie team, and elite players, and assisted for an elite coach, and been to the mountain, people listen.

Actually I think that is precisely the problem. We have approached this whole thing like somebody coming off of a messy breakup. And so you get overly cautious, and overly scared, and are determined to move so slowly so that there is no chance you get hurt again, and in the process you miss out on opportunities to be with people you want to be with.

Well put, and I'm glad Ryle voiced this more forcefully than I did. There is nobody to blame but SVG if SVG doesn't want to be here.

I think the biggest frustration might be that of the 3 top candidates SVG has far and away the best resume - but there are more than 3 candidates available and the Kings are doing their best not to rush into things. The one thing they could be faulted on is that if SVG truly is the best coach available and the guy they've wanted all along they had around a one month jump on Orlando to make their pitch and close the deal.

Van Gundy close to Magic offer​

Former Miami Heat coach Stan Van Gundy is the on the verge of being offered the opportunity to coach the Orlando Magic, after the team received second thoughts from Billy Donovan.

Van Gundy, who was interviewed by the Magic just prior to the interview that led to Donovan being hired last week, declined to comment on a potential Orlando opportunity.

However, Van Gundy said he left last Wednesday's interview in Orlando feeling comfortable with the Magic situation.

"I thought the interview went well," he said Monday morning.

The Magic, already in scramble mode amid Donovan's second thoughts about leaving the University of Florida, could find itself having to move quickly with Van Gundy.

Van Gundy met Saturday in Las Vegas with the Sacramento Kings' ownership and management.

"I thought the interview went well and I expect to hear something from them today," he said from his Miami-area home. "It won't necessarily be a decision, but I do expect to hear from Geoff (Petrie, the Kings president) today."

Van Gundy last week expressed interest in the Orlando job, both because of the team's potential, as well as the proximity that would keep him near his parents, who live in Miami, and his wife's mother, who lives in Lake Mary.

Van Gundy has been in contact with Donovan during the Magic's interview process and the unlikely possibility of him joining a Donovan Magic coaching staff even was mentioned during Donovan's introductory media session Friday.

Van Gundy also has interviewed for coaching vacancies in Charlotte and Indiana. The Bobcats elected to hire former Mavericks assistant coach Sam Vincent, while Van Gundy opted to bypass an offer from the Pacers, who last week hired former Celtics and 76ers coach Jim O'Brien.

Because of the family concerns that led him to leave as Heat coach in December 2005, Van Gundy said stability and quality of life would factor into his future plans. Van Gundy was raised just outside of Sacramento.

Van Gundy is under contract as a Heat consultant through June 2008, but Pat Riley said last month that Van Gundy is free to leave for another coaching position. Van Gundy has kept Riley informed of his options and interviews throughout these past four weeks.

Van Gundy joined the Heat as an assistant coach on Sept. 20, 1995, and took over from Riley as coach on Oct. 24, 2003. He left as Heat coach December 12, 2005, citing family reasons, after recording a 112-73 record in his two-plus seasons as coach.

SVG wanted to coach Orlando from the beinning, he basically came out and said that a week back. If Billy had said no he would have been coaching the magic by now. And he must likely thought to himself do i what to coach a team on the rise, in the east, with a boat load of talent, and in my back yard. Or do i want to coach a team in the west, with a roster in disaray including Artest, and quickly adding south. The answer was easy.

The only fault the kings commited was taking their time with SVG if he was really their number one choice. Once the kings saw that Billy might sign with Orlando they should have quickly offered a deal to SVG before anything changed. By not signing him quickly this just tells me that he might not have been their first choice.

And frankly, I don't blame the Kings for NOT coming out and jumping the gun on offering a contract. The waiting game tends to work in moments like this, and there are two ways of thinking about it, if I'm SVG- the first is: They (ORL) had their chance, and blew it. This team (SAC) wants me more, and it's been mutual from the start. Or, he could feel that the Donovan thing was a way of finding his perfect fit, all things considered.

I think that Porter or Rambis were likely more a fit for us all along, Porter in particular. He has had some great buzz surrounding him during the playoffs, and the iron seems hot to get him in here. Plus, has anyone heard the speculation that he may be in line for the Pistons post if Flip gets canned? He would likely take that job before us too, so we may want to get cracking on this thing....
