Free agent guard Luther Head will go to camp with the Sacramento Kings on a non-guaranteed deal, league sources tell Y!

Former Celtic and Knick swingman J.R. Giddens invited to Kings training camp. Giddens says his surgically repaired left knee a lot stronger.

Luther is a 38% 3pt shooter... and Giddens used to be able to do nasty dunks.....

Interesting... to say the least... I thought for sure both these guys would sign somewhere already... I wonder what Ime Udoka is doing right now?

Yeah, Head's an NBA player + I would think he might have a real shot at sticking with his shooting.
68 NBA starts, 38 percent from 3-point range, has averaged 11 points for a season, scored 30 points twice -- didn't expect anyone legit coming to camp, so this is a pleasant surprise.

I'm sure this is covered elsewhere, but how many open spots do the Kings actually have on the roster? I still see Udoka on the roster, but haven't heard a peep about him coming back. Jackson, Jeter, Sloan ... do those guys have make-good contracts, or is there guaranteed money involved?

Curiously, no season splits vs. Kings available for him on NBA.com. I thought I remembered him having a couple of good games vs. Sac in his first Houston stint, but the mind's the first thing to go.

jeter is guaranteed, sloan is not. Jackson is in his last year. We were expecting him to be bought out, but apparently he will be on the roster afterall.

Heh. Luther Head is Quincy Douby, only WORSE. I watched Giddens when he played for the celtics last year. He has no idea what he's doing on the court, and every time you see him catch the ball you want to close your eyes or make bets with your friends that the celtics are going to turn the ball over on that possession.

Yeah, Head belongs in the NBA for sure. He's not what I would call a great shooter, but an above average one who can also hit off the dribble. Can be really streaky however, can pee people off given he doesn't bring much else to the table offensively. Rarely chooses to attack the basket, not much of a passer, not a freak athlete, takes most of his shots 16' out. Defensively he's quite decent too--can D up decently both ways. He's a niche role player--reliable shooter, reliable defender, but I've read in the past he has some focus issues which might have relegated him to journeyman over the past several years.

Giddens hasn't played much in the league, but he's young athletic clay, can finish in spectacular fashion especially on the break, and he's willing to take mid-range J's even if the results aren't there. Plays bigger than his body--rebounds well, gets to the line, fairly tough. But the brains aren't quite there yet--he's turnover prone, lacks defensive fundamentals, doesn't have much passing and not much of a jumper. Can experiment with him to see how it goes, but I sort of doubt his potential at this point.

Jackson would not be bought out. His contract is fully unguaranteed, so we can cut him anytime and not owe him any future money from that point. If he is to be cut, expect that to happen after we've gotten a look at him in training camp/preseason.

I don't see the need for these two gentleman, they would only be warming up the bench and waving some white towels around ala Donte

Have you actually seen Luther Head play? He's a Douby that was actually reasonably successful in the NBA. I like his place on the team.

The Best Of The Rest: NBA Training Camp Invites

J.R. Giddens (Kings): After starting his career in Boston after they won the title in 2008, Giddens never really got his shot on the veteran team. So after getting traded to the Knicks last season in the deal for Nate Robinson, it was finally his time. Well, after finishing up the season in New York, and going through arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in February, Giddens says his knee is a lot stronger and has been invited to Kings training camp. Finally playing for a young team, Giddens should have a legit chance to stick around in Sacramento.

Luther Head (Kings): Speaking of the Kings, Sacramento has signed Head to a non-guaranteed deal to attend training camp. With a lot of bigs, it’s no surprise that the Kings are looking for shooters. After playing 47 games (10 starts) for the Pacers last season, and almost getting signed to the Hornets this summer, it’s kind of strange to still see Head on the open market. Here’s his chance.

Nice training camp invites - a good break from the usual undrafted/unheard-of fodder.

I especially like that the Kings are taking a look at Luther Head. As previously stated, he's pretty limited, but he fills a need off the bench: shooting and defense (on PGs and smaller 2s).

Worth taking a look at Giddens. He's had a rough road as anyone who's been a top HS recruit...this is his last chance IMO.

Unless Luther Head really has medical issues ala New Orleans' doctors (I believe Yahoo's Adrian Woj... said this was a political move against former GM Jeff Bower), I can see him making the lineup, with Sloan/Jackson/Giddens not making the cut:

PG: Reke/Beno/Pooh
SG: Garcia/Wright/Head
SF: Omri/Donte
PF: Landry/Thompson/Whiteside
C: Dalembert/Cousins

Good, not great lineup for the year. Didn't really get the combo shooter/ballhandler/passer/defender that we needed...instead we got each of those strengths broken up into 3 different players. A big issue (among others that I see) is going to be passing, so hopefully a few players make significant improvements in this area. Fingers are crossed in hopes that we can string together a nice 10-game improvement...or more...

Thing with Head is that he just failed a physical in New Orleans, which might be an indication that he's actually pretty much done. Can't hurt to have him as a camp invitee though.
I wouldn't take that as an indication of anything. What happened there was just a shady maneuver on the part of the Hornets management. They'd just hired a new regime while Head's contract was still in the process of going through, and since the new GM didn't want him (even though he'd signed the contract), management intentionally failed his physical in order to get out of the deal. Let's give the guy a shot in camp before we judge his prospects as a King.

Head is what he is. Which in my opinion is a career journeyman. After being a first round pick and getting a lot of minutes his first two years, his career has been headed in the wrong direction. He would at least bring some experience to the team and decent outside shooting. He's certainly not going to be a difference maker, but could be a nice player off the bench for 5 to 10 minutes here and there.

Giddens is a different story altogether. He's an athletic player, or at least used to be before the injury, thats never had a legitimate chance. He's very raw, and you would be betting on pure potential with him. He would certainly have less chance of getting on the floor than Head would, considering his total playing time in the NBA. So the only reason I can see for his invite is for long range potential. If he were to make the team, I doubt he'll get much playing time. His only advantage over Head is athletic ability and being 2 inches taller.

Every year lately, we can count on Geoff to take a chance on some players who might not make it, that are available because they've been injured, or had conditioning problems, or simply failed to convince people that they belong in the NBA. They are mostly in the range of Jeter/May/Shelden Williams. I like these better than most.

Sources: Head, Kings agree on non-guaranteed deal

After a dubious failed physical that nullified an agreement with the New Orleans Hornets in mid-July, free agent guard Luther Head(notes) has agreed to a non-guaranteed deal with the Sacramento Kings, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

If Sacramento finds that Head’s ankle is healthy, he has a good chance to make the roster and play a reserve role for the Kings, sources say. Head is guaranteed $992,000 for the 2010-11 season, if he’s on the Kings roster on Dec. 1, one source says. And yet like the rest of the league, the Kings were unwilling to guarantee the deal because Hornets president Hugh Weber declared that Head had flunked his physical in July.

Head had agreed to a one-year deal with Hornets GM Jeff Bower, only to have the GM fired within days of the verbal agreement. It appeared that Weber didn’t want Head under contract for the next GM, and cancelled the agreement after the physical. Several sources insisted that there was nothing wrong with the ankle, and Weber’s decision appears to have made it more difficult for Head, 28, to find a job this summer.

Head averaged 7.6 points in 47 games for the Indiana Pacers last season.

The Kings are also inviting former Celtics and Knicks forward J.R. Giddens(notes) to training camp with a non-guaranteed deal, Yahoo! Sports’ Marc Spears reports.

I read today on jason jones blog on sacbee.com that geoff petrie said that ryan thompson is going to camp with the spurs and not the kings like previously thought.

Kings Get Head

After a deal with NOLA fell through earlier in the summer, Sacramento’s reached an agreement with Luther Head.
