Center Wright returning to Hawks

Published on: 08/05/06 The Hawks have reached an agreement with free agent center and former Hawk Lorenzen Wright on a two-year contract worth an estimated $6 million, according to a source familiar with the situation.
Wright, a 6-11, 250-pound 10-year veteran, played the past five seasons in Memphis, alongside All-Star center Pau Gasol. He started 58 of 78 regular season games for the Grizzlies this past season and averaged 5.8 points and 5.1 rebounds while playing just 21.7 minutes per game.
Wright spent two seasons with the Hawks, 1999-00 and 2000-01, posting a career high scoring average (12.4) during his second season.
Drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers with the seventh pick in the 1996 draft, Wright has career averages of 8.8 points and 6.9 rebounds. He fills a huge need for the Hawks as the backup center to fourth-year pro Zaza Pachulia.
 
Quite surprising from Wright's stand-point, I knew he wanted a 3-year deal though, his agent said that in early July. A bit disappointing from our stand-point. At least it's not to a good team in the west. ;)

Well, another one gone... Cato/Olowokandi? They're still out there. Get on the ball with that LLE, Petrie. I say that because I expect something soon with it getting into August now, and with Geoff's history, when he starts doing stuff.

Damnit. And that again is a reasonable/reachable level contract until we spent our MLE on Salmons. LLE should be about $2.6mil this year? So think the best we could do now would be about 2yrs $5.2mil for somebody.


Still like Cato as a guy who at least knows his role and doesn't mess anything up. Not sure how much he has left after the injury though.

From what I read, the LLE is 1.75 million. In the Salmons article.

Well, as Cato said in April, and I've mentioned whenever he's in consideration for us - he's rehabbing the ankle this summer. I'd say that means something, I think he can still be a solid defensive big for someone. Hopefully us.

The Kings, meanwhile, might be on the lookout for a big man on the relative cheap. They have $800,000 remaining from their mid-level exception and a separate exception worth $1.75 million.

There's also Melvin Ely out there.... not quite a center though. Can play it sometimes, but not sure he could regularily. PF? Yeah. I like his mobility, solid offensively and defensively. At this point, I wouldn't mind if we got him.

nice signing for the hawks... really wanted him on the kings roster though...

i just wonder if wright would back up pachulia... personally id rather have wright start, just for the experience really... even though zaza has started over the past yr, he is still fairly young and inexperienced...
 
My question is?....How come a lot of teams get away with just signing and picking up free agents without giving anybody in return while we have to contend with a sign and trade most of the time or we lose a player without anything in return. Look at this recent acquisition by the Hawks....they didn't have to give up anything. Look at the Spurs, they got Elson and Butler without disrupting their roster. That goes for the other teams,Dallas,Hornets,Bulls etc. etc.. Why can't it happen for us too. I just don't see the logic. Can somebody explain it to me please?!

You only have a certina amount of money to spend once you are over the cap. The MLE, and every two years, the LLE. Also of course guys at the league minimum ( about a mil a year normally).

We spent our MLE on John Salmons. So there was our pickup. The Spurs split their MLE in half, and gave half to Butler and half to Elson. So there were their pickups. BTW, they traded away Rasho, and then let Nazr walk in order to open up those ropster spots, just as it looks like we are going to let Bonzi walk to open up space for Salmons.

The problem for us now is that having already used our MLE, we can only offer very small contracts. And we already have a LOT of players under contract. It will be hard to sign somebody for the puny $$ we have left who is better than the piles of players we already have:

Douby
Price
Hart
Bibby
Corliss
Admundson (partial guarantee)
Williams (partial guarantee?)

we should sign Pavel Podkolzin that Dallas just realeased. You would like him Brick. he averages 2.66 blocks per 48 he is second in the league for centers at an awesome 18.6 reb per 48 min. Not only is he a top rebounder and shot blocker per 48 min he also averages 8 points.

what does that mean? Corlis is a pointless player and since when is he retiring? Check out our record last year with Artest and Kevin Martin starting with only Garcia and Hart coming off the bench plus Shareef still getting his stamina back after not being able to eat solid food for almost 2 months. We had a very good record. Now jump to this year. Artest in better shape no hip pointer (he hurt his hip the first week with us) and Kevin Martin primed and ready to start now not only Garcia but Salmons coming off the bench with some more 3 point shooting with Douby and the promis of some young hustle bigs in Amundson and Williams. Also a defensive minded coach with a team that needs defensive help and not hurting on offense. I will be willing to bet anybody on this board $100 that we are 5th seed or higher in the playoffs if we stand pat with the players we have now. Let us get a little more experienced PF/C to backup or if he is good enough to start and i am looking for division championship which gives us at least the 3rd seed.

Except that this time is the only time we didn't show interest, and could of easily got him. At least we didn't publicly, who knows what happened behind the media. No one does but the organization, we won't know unless the media somehow releases it. Which doesn't always happen right away, and usually later on, if at all sometimes.

How about there's 2 months left, there's still the LLE to be used, and there are of course trades. Petrie never does anything early, and gets started in late July/early August.

Also, how do we know, aside from what's been released publicly (a whole handful of things have, which has shown he's been trying), that he hasn't been doing anything since the Salmons deal? We don't, and to release that news isn't right. You also have to take into account that dealing with Bonzi held things up, we knew it, the organization knew it.

Simple as that.

Anyone else wish Petrie would have just gone by the Atlanta summer plan?

Sign Claxton and Wright, and sign & trade Bonzi for a trade exception.

I would be a lot happier than I am right now ;)
 
Well, Claxton went to Atlanta for a starting spot and 6.8 million a year I believe. We did try to get him as reported in the Bee, but bolted to the Hawks. Be surprised if he turned that down, along with already having a ring being a key guy on the Spurs.

Wright, I don't know why he went to Atlanta or why we couldn't get him. He must have a house there or something, or just took the most that was offered. Who knows. Not sure he'll start though.
 
But 2 years for 6 million is a cheap price to get him. Can't we offer him the same? We couldv'e dumped 1 or 2 players so we could get him. Why didn't we do that?

well, you can't know that he IS trying either.

and given recent history (reef, hart, and bonzi last summer, and just ostertag the previous summer), i can see how many people (including myself) get the sense that petrie's just sitting on his hands, or his deals aren't coming to fruition.

it's very frustrating.

You can't just "dump" players to get rid of them. If you waive them, you're still liable for their salaries.
 
The frustrating thing is that we don't know what Petrie is or is not waiting for. There have been plenty of players that could have helped us and a few still remain. Teams are improving left right and center while we just sit tight. I just hope Petrie isn't waiting for next summer...
 
We don't know that Petrie is waiting. He may have a deal in the works that we know absolutely nothing about. Or he may have more faith in the players already on the roster than we have. Or he may, in fact, be waiting to see how the new tall kids work out in training camp. Or he may be waiting for a message from the mother ship.

With Petrie, we simply don't know - and we just have to learn to get used to it.

Um, for Pryzbilla and Claxton? Yes I can, because it was reported 1 or 2 times back in mid-July.

We don't know what he's been doing since that and the Salmons signing. Why? Nothings been released. All that is known is that there is 2 months left in the off-season.

Predicting/wondering/questioning, yeah that's part of being a fan in the off-season.

Simple as that. :)

I just think it's best to keep an open-mind with the off-season.

sure, you can keep an open-mind if you're an optimist, but if you're a pessimist then it's a different story. :)

i HOPE petrie is trying, since it's his job. but like i said...just frustrating that it doesn't get us anywhere.

HATE the offseason.
