Lineup Change: Who goes to the bench?

Who should take on the 6th man role?

Hall of Famer
Been talked about a fair amount, but I personally think it's time for one of IT/MT to go to the bench, for two reason.

A) Lack of defense. It's hurting us.
B) Selfishness. Aside from Cuz, they're not getting anyone involved. Lack of ball movement wasn't because of Reke being out, it was that IT/MT didn't feel they had to compete for shots. Reke comes back, and those two once again went back to a "shoot first" mentality.

So, who do you want going to the bench? Yes, there's an option for those who want to keep things as they are.

IT goes to bench because he is not as good on D as Thornton, especially because of his size. I know he plays bigger than his 5'9" but MT at 6'4" plays bigger than his size and is simply better than IT - way better at this point. Thornton will win more games for you than lose them for you. I can't say the same about IT at this point in the little rookies career.

Given a choice, I would send both to the bench, and start a huge line up of Reke, Salmons, Greene, JT (when hes back) and Boogie. Might prefer Cisco to Salmons to give slightly better outside shooting.

At least would try it for some time and see how this group performs, particularly on defense.

This is worth, at least, a game to try out, I think. Salmons has been halfway decent in the point "forward" role. Free Evans up to work off the ball, give up nothing defensively, possibly even get better. Why not try it once?

Not against the Spurs, though.

I doubt we are going to see any change before the end of the year. We are seeing some spastic impatient moves by Smart when he gets frustrated with the team -- he is definitely trying to win. But with the playoffs out of reeach there isn't going to be any desperation to make full on lineup changes on a "we have to find a way toi get some wins" theory.

Perhaps not, but maybe there should be some full lineup changes, on a "we need to find out who we still want to be here next year" theory...

Yup. Why not see how Reke looks a SG before considering shopping he or MT this summer, which I think one ultimately will be. Words can't describe how big of a mistake it would be to consider moving Reke without playing him at the 2 beforehand.

But I'd also argue a similar case for Donte. He's showing considerably improvement of late,so why not run him out at SF for a few games before deciding whether we bring him back or not? It scares me thinking our FO might make roster changes this summer based on players playing out of position with inconsistent rotations.

Pick + MT for Anthony Davis and Bismack Biyombo. One can dream

No team would be stupid enough to trade that pick. We have a better chance of getting lucky in the draft than of trading for that pick.

You're talking about the Bobcats, owned by the guy who drafted Kwame Brown and then acquired him the second he bought another team.

It'd make sense for a team like the Bobcats with absolutely 0 talent. Acquire a 20 PPG scorer and still be able to get another stud player at 6

Either way, back on topic. It doesn't matter who we bench at this point as long as it puts Reke back at guard and we stop with playing IT/MT/Reke on the floor at the same time. There's simply not enough shots to go around for the 3 of them and then a Center who needs 16+ shots a game

I voted for Thomas to go the bench, only because I think Evans needs to play point, whether he's an ideal PG or not. We are only hurting his game by playing him at SF and SG doesn't really make any sense either. Whenever Thornton or Reke needs a breather, then Thomas will be the first up off the bench. It will suck in the fact that Thomas won't get as many minutes as you'd like him to get, but it's better than playing Reke out of position.

Henson would make a very nice consolation prize if we lose out on Davis. They're essentially the same player with Davis having the bigger upside

I'm not as sold on Henson as others are but certainly wouldn't mind seeing him on our team. Regardless, having an MT or even IT as a potential trading chip opens up a lot of avenues for improving the team.

Actually you don't know who has the #1 pick until they go through the lottery. In fact, WE have a statistical chance of getting the #1 pick. Anything can happen as we have found out to our chagrin. Depending on which way the ping pong balls bounce, we have a statistical possibility of things going our way for once. In act, don't we have a chance of getting into the top 3 and then it goes in strict order of the W/L record? I THINK that's how it works.

I'm with you on all aspects of this note.

Yeah that's how it works. I was just working under the assumption that the Bobcats wind up with the #1 pick since barring sudden drastic improvement, they'll have the worst record in the league.

You realize the worst record has only won the lotto 5 times in 26 years. And only 2 times in 15 years since they changed to the current format. They only have a 25% chance of winning which means the odds are still against them.

Hey, a man can have his fantasies can't he?

pg: Thomas
sg: Tyreke
sf: Garcia
pf: JT
c: Cousins

I dont get why we have to have our 3 best players start, also salmons is needed in the 2nd unit for ball handling. Garcia is the "type" of sf we need in the starting lineup. good defender that can hit the spot up 3. Half Court offense runs through Cousins, Tyreke and Isiah push the ball to get easy baskets. That starting lineup has 2 spot up shooters (Isiah, Garcia) 2 perimeter playmakers (Isiah, Tyreke), a go to inside player (Cousins) and a utility pf in JT.

second unit
salmons
Thornton
T Will
Greene
Hayes

this is the most balance we can bring to our team with the roster we currently have, Starting Tyreke, Thornton and Cousins means not maximizing the production of our top 3 players(Tonight Tyreke was held back). I don't see how a coach on salary cant see what i and other fans see. its just rage inducing
